this is a very nice forum and by reading the comments I can tell that Howard does an awesome job of selecting a congenial student body (which is important for the next 4 yrs of your life).

My blessed as well to get an interview invitation and its coming up 🙂 It starts at 8am!!! could you guys share how it went for you and how the day is planned. also, when do they let you know who would interview you? i like howard a lot and that's why im really anxious.....

this is a very nice forum and by reading the comments I can tell that Howard does an awesome job of selecting a congenial student body (which is important for the next 4 yrs of your life).

My blessed as well to get an interview invitation and its coming up 🙂 It starts at 8am!!! could you guys share how it went for you and how the day is planned. also, when do they let you know who would interview you? i like howard a lot and that's why im really anxious.....

• you start the day off by going through a few informational presentations
• then you attend one of the MS-1 lectures for about 30-40 minutes
• afterwards there are more presentations pertaining to financial aid, curriculum, HUCM heritage, Washington DC
• afterwards you go to lunch as a group and get a chance to speak with two or three students to get their perspective.
• you are then taken on a tour of the university lead by two students (normally one MS-1 and one MS-2 so that you can get both perspectives)
• afterwards there is another presentation and then discussion.

throughout the day, students will be pulled so that they may have their interview. The admissions team know who you are going to interview with but they do not tell you until you are about to got to your interview.

Post Interview Thoughts...

I absolutely 😍😍😍 Howard!!! Everything about the school from its mission & current students to its faculty and admissions staff completely wooed me! They really ensure that you feel comfortable, know that you are appreciated, and will be welcomed with open arms should they choose to accept you. That family oriented atmosphere in itself was enough to persuade me that I wouldn't think twice about moving 800+ miles from home to be here for four years😀 I pray that God allows Howard to see my genuine drive and commitment of service to the underserved.

Special shout out and kudos to Kaji, DrDang, and Ciera for being totally awesome and super supportive students. When I tell you guys that SDN was truly a Godsend for me, I'm still in awe of how the Lord blessed me with so many supporters whom I don't even know! He is so AWESOME!

Any who, I'm still remaining faithful and continuing to keep everyone in my prayers. Hopefully HUCM will open its doors to all of us faithfully awaiting that acceptance!

I was also invited to an interview at Howard recently. Like most of us, I began contacting all the HUCM grads/students I know. I got a weird response from one of them this morning. I thought I would go ahead and share it with you guys. So here it goes:

"Glad to hear things are looking good on the interview front. I have to say that my experience at Howard has been difficult (you certainly won't get far, and may even hurt yourself by mentioning my name). It is hard to be at Howard if you are in any way different from the average student there. Additionally, they are very inflexible and run the place like a branch of the DC city government- ie., inefficiently. I think you should also know that they let in ~20% more students for the 1st year than will graduate (this is a steady #) and figure they will whittle themselves down and either drop out, or in many cases be kicked out for academic reasons (this usually happens during the 1st year). I guess this helps them to earn more tuition money during the 1st year and while it isn't as bad as, say, Caribbean schools, it is a frustrating situation. The school doesn't have funding and at times seems very unprofessional.


Sorry to be so negative, but I definitely want students to go into the situation knowing what they face. It struck me as odd that my most fruitful, productive and educational rotations where at PG hospital and Wash. Hospital Center, and not at Howard's Hospital. This made me realize something is not going as well as it should be."

Your friend seems to be pretty unhappy at Howard. If he/she is so miserable, why not make every effort possible to transfer out?😕 With any institution of higher learning that you attend, there will always be pros and cons. It's what the STUDENT makes of the experience that matters. Of course you want to ensure that you are attending a school that can compete with the rest of the nation's allopathic schools in regards to educational opportunity, residency, and USMLE success rates, but unless you heard it from the horse's mouth [i.e., reputable source such as COM faculty and/or admissions staff, published figures from outside sources hired to do this sort of thing, etc], I think that your friend's opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.🙁 (No offense)

Did this line up with the other folks that you talked to? I personally like to get info from more than one source.

I also wonder what the 'average' student is there, and if they have the same views as homeslice.

Either way, I'm good and am appreciative of my blessing, as I believe most of the folks on this board are/will be.

Thanks for sharing this. I think it brings up the interesting point that everyone's experience is different and that Howard, like many other schools, isn't perfect. I think its important when deciding on a medical school to make sure that not only is the school a good fit for you, but that you're a good fit for the school. ( Ms. Walk mentioned this to me in my interview, and it really opened my eyes.) Over the years I've thrived in atmospheres similar to the one I encountered at Howard on interview day and this only solidified that Howard is where I want to be. 🙂

As an applicant, I have no idea what really goes on. On the website though, I did notice information for people who dropped out and wanted to apply for re-admission. This gave me the impression that it is common: http://medicine.howard.edu/students/prospective/admissions/acceptances.htm
Whatever the case, I believe we all make our own conditions in life. I wouldn't let that dissuade you from attending.

Yea I just wanted to share this and have a discussion on it. I am very fortunate and thankful to even the have the opportunity to interview at Howard. I think my friend just had a bad experience but I have heard from multiple sources that they have low funding and the organization isnt great. I think this person that I quoted just seems bitter.

It's good to hear other opinions about the school. But as someone said earlier, HU isn't for everybody. That's why it's good to gather these opinions for yourself at your interview to determine if you would be a good fit. No school is perfect. What might be a great experience for some might be a nightmare for others. It's all about what you make of it. People say the same thing about Howard undergrad--which is a great institution by the way 😉

Another thing I'll mention is that the success of other students (as far as students dropping out, etc.) has nothing to do with you. I know PLENTY of HUCM grads who now have great residencies and are great doctors. It's all about how you use what's given to you.

Thanks! I'm one of those in limbo with no rejection or interview invitation. I did send an email, so we'll see. The website says they only interview through april and we're half way through...

The normal cut off is in 2 weeks but on certain occasions they do interview into the first week of May. This is mainly for the alternate list but since HUCM's alternate list is fluid you have a high chance of still getting in

Thanks Kaji!!! 🙂 What if you already got the out of committee email. Would you still recommend sending a letter of intent since a decision has technically already been made?

I actually would not. At this point a decision was already made. It's best to "let go and let God deal with it" and pray that the letter you receive say "Congrats! you have been accepted" or at least "we have selected you for our alternate list" which is still a good chance of gaining acceptance

Post Interview Thoughts...

I absolutely 😍😍😍 Howard!!! Everything about the school from its mission & current students to its faculty and admissions staff completely wooed me! They really ensure that you feel comfortable, know that you are appreciated, and will be welcomed with open arms should they choose to accept you. That family oriented atmosphere in itself was enough to persuade me that I wouldn't think twice about moving 800+ miles from home to be here for four years😀 I pray that God allows Howard to see my genuine drive and commitment of service to the underserved.

Special shout out and kudos to Kaji, DrDang, and Ciera for being totally awesome and super supportive students. When I tell you guys that SDN was truly a Godsend for me, I'm still in awe of how the Lord blessed me with so many supporters whom I don't even know! He is so AWESOME!

Any who, I'm still remaining faithful and continuing to keep everyone in my prayers. Hopefully HUCM will open its doors to all of us faithfully awaiting that acceptance!

This person must have had a really bad experience at Howard. In my opinion, the school is what you make of it. Even though Howard administration can be slow at times but the faculty are excellent especially the Anatomy department. Howard college of Medicine is very flexible to changes. They listen to the student and try to make changes each year to make the school better. I can only speak so far as a first year here at Howard but my experience have been humbling and wonderful. I was also invited to an interview at Howard recently. Like most of us, I began contacting all the HUCM grads/students I know. I got a weird response from one of them this morning. I thought I would go ahead and share it with you guys. So here it goes:

"Glad to hear things are looking good on the interview front. I have to say that my experience at Howard has been difficult (you certainly won't get far, and may even hurt yourself by mentioning my name). It is hard to be at Howard if you are in any way different from the average student there. Additionally, they are very inflexible and run the place like a branch of the DC city government- ie., inefficiently. I think you should also know that they let in ~20% more students for the 1st year than will graduate (this is a steady #) and figure they will whittle themselves down and either drop out, or in many cases be kicked out for academic reasons (this usually happens during the 1st year). I guess this helps them to earn more tuition money during the 1st year and while it isn't as bad as, say, Caribbean schools, it is a frustrating situation. The school doesn't have funding and at times seems very unprofessional.


Sorry to be so negative, but I definitely want students to go into the situation knowing what they face. It struck me as odd that my most fruitful, productive and educational rotations where at PG hospital and Wash. Hospital Center, and not at Howard's Hospital. This made me realize something is not going as well as it should be."

This is not my opinion but I just thought that this person's response was quite interesting.I would love to find out what others(who are attending howard or have already attended) think about this. Please do not get offended or upset. I am just concerned as a future medical student at Howard.

Sometimes I feel as though certain ppl would rather focus more on the administrative flaws and less on the amazing faculty and student body. I personally have spent my time her embracing the great things within HUCM (Faculty, students, and staff) and trying my best to make changes to the administrations (suggestions to Student Health to make things smoother, as well as the initial ID CARD distribution). I cannot speak on rotations but hopefully that person has been making valuable suggestions so that Me and DrD will not have to deal with the same issues lol... I interviewed on 3/6 and I haven't heard a decision. But the process is usually longer this time of the year. Being anxious is an understatement now

'January' SilentSoldier?! I feel your pain. I pray that God grants you an acceptance. Have you called at all since your interview? I don't think that it would hurt if you called or sent a very polite email. Ms. Walk and Ms. Jones seem to be very understanding and easy to talk to. Give it a try.

I ask this because some school adcom's that I have spoken to said the earlier the better because it shows that "you really want it", whereas others say it may not be best to submit your application too early if your GPA isn't competitive since many students have not yet submitted their own and thus the adcom want to be able to choose the best candidate. Hey rupharm, hope your MCAT's go well. It is good to give your application early, but if you think that you can add a couple of things to make your application look better and apply later, that is also a good option, but make sure that it is not too late in the process! Good luck!
