MSU isn't the only school that looks beyond the stats. I know someone with ample research experience, a great GPA, and a very high MCAT score who was wait listed by his alma mater, the University of Michigan, and someone else who had a lower GPA and scored 10 points lower on her MCAT who was accepted. I can't make sense of it but I wouldn't go as far as to say their process is irrational or that it seems like they pick names out of a hat. Members of ADCOMs are intelligent, accomplished individuals and deserve our respect, even if we don't always understand or agree with their decisions.

That being said, if you really want to know why you were wait listed, you should contact the ADCOM and politely ask for their reason(s).

Best of luck.

I never used the word irrational. I was just adding to the fact that there are some high stats people on the waitlist and of course stats aren't everything, if we are talking about the same applicant who is sub 30 MCAT its because her premed advisor took the U of M adcomm out to lunch, wined and dined them and spent the entire time telling them about this amazing applicant with such a crazy lifestory. And U of M loves life experience and unique applicants. I haven't really been disrespectful and I ask that you look at the username before you put words in someone's mouth. That being said, I've clearly stated there is method to the madness and I will definitely call and ask just out of curiosity at a more appropriatw time in the application cycle.

Does anyone know how long it took after releasing your background check to receive the "formal acceptance"? Thanks!

cant wait for my interview Thursday!!!

Are you staying with student or hotel? They havent found me a student host so I need to scurry and find a place to stay tomorrow haha. Any suggestions for grand rapids?

I ma staying at the courtyard marriott. its real close to the med center, i think i paid around $100

I would recommend staying within walking distance of Secchia if you aren't getting your own transportation, which it sounds like you did. Had one too many bad experiences relying on taxis on med school interviews, and the taxis in Grand Rapids can be a bit slow. Good luck to the both of you on Thursday!

Thanks! I am actually driving up from indy so I will have my own car if anyone needs a ride anywhere weds or thurs

Good luck on your interviews, everyone (especially emcda001 and AvarysDad!)

I don't think we're talking about the same person. I assume that you meant that her premed advisor works for the University of Michigan....? If that's the case, then no, because the woman I'm referring to did not attend UM. If her premed advisor doesn't work for UM, then that's an even weirder circumstance and we might be talking about the same person.

About the "irrational" and "look at the username" thing: no, I realize the other user used the term 'irrational", but your response to my comment was clearly trying to defend/support that person's stance.

About the respect thing: meant it as a general comment to wrap up my point, but feel free to say, "It seems like your ADCOM just picks names out of a hat," during your next interview and see if they find it disrespectful.

Anyway, since your stats are in the 90th percentile, you have stronger ECs and more patient contact than the average applicant, and managed to work 40 hours per week during your college career, I'm sure you have many acceptances and don't need to worry about the this school's "madness". so congrats on that

Received conditional acceptance, gave consent for background check the next day, received formal acceptance 11 days later.

This applicant did not attend U of M either, but she is non traditional. And we are on the same side of the argument. I meant that from our perspective, from the outside looking in, it can SEEM like picking names out of a hat, but there is method to the madness. And I don't have many acceptances, but I have faith in the system.

Ahh. okay.

Well I hope it works out for you. Wait list at MSU isn't essentially a rejection, like it is at some other schools. Would you prefer Grand Rapids or East Lansing?

school: LOVED! faculty: LOVED!! students: LOVED!! heated carpet: LOVED!! ceiling to floor windows: LOVED!! bottled water: LOVED!!

pretty much loved my interview day. Interviewed at 3 schools and MSU blew them all away. I'm going to wear my suit everyday until I get an acceptance call 🙂

The Secchia center was gorgeous, but I have so many friends in East Lansing, so I would probably end up in EL. What about you?

dang, then regardless we wont be classmates.

If I get my choice, I'll be in Grand Rapids. I can definitely see the appeal of the main campus, but my girlfriend has family and friends in GR so we'll be going out there.

good luck brother

hahahaha I'm glad you liked your interview day and thank you for making your comment rhyme so it sounds like a rap. For that reason alone, I hope we get to be classmates 🙂

I am down to get together after the second look. See you guys Friday!

I am excited to meet all of you in August! Good luck to those on the alternate list. Don't lose hope!

So...second look? I'm excited for this, because I had kind of a bad taste in my mouth after my interview, and I'm hoping to have a better experience 🙂

FYI...when I was at my interview last Thursday they said the last decision day was May 1st. So there are 3 more weeks for us to get a decision. Not that anyone is keeping track or anything 😉

I am curious, what were the circumstances of your interview day that left a "bad taste"?

The students at the lunch my day we pretty conceited and rude. But I've heard from several people that that's not representative of the school, and that some students feel they need to be more careful with the students they allow to do the lunch

To be honest with you, I felt the same way. There were two people particularly I could describe in the same way, one much more than the other. Whenever the osteopathic school was brought up, they would make fun of it. One girl in particular, an M2, called them "the massagers". I wanted to be like "relax, you're just a student". This girl in particular was just extremely insolent in many respects. But I think you will find people like this at any medical school, I didn't worry about it too much. At Wayne, all my tour guide talked about was how much smarter Canadian students were over American students (he was Canadian).

if it makes a difference every student I met with was really helpful and genuine. I cant think of one out of maybe 10 that I spoke with for more then 2 minutes that I thought was self centered or rude in any way. With that said, I won't assume every student is like my experience if you guys don't assume every student was similar to your experience 🙂

I agree with you. I think I acknowledged that this was not representative of the student body. I made no assumptions. My post was one of reassurance for SisterDisco to let her know I felt the same way and not everyone is like that.

Just got an email requesting a 3rd interview with a student. Not sure what to make of that but thankful its not a rejection!

Well that doesn't sound like our school- just curious which campus was yor interview? EL or GR?
I agree that there are those rude types everywhere you go, not just med school. Are starting your second look in EL?
I hope your second look day is better than interview day!!!!!

Just got the call!! ACCEPTED!!

MSUCHM Class of 2016!

Interviewed Thursday 4/12!

To my knowledge, this happens when there is a large discrepancy between the write-ups from your first two interviews. I'm sure there are other reasons a third interview could be requested, but this is my understanding.

Also, can't wait to meet some of you guys at second look! Hopefully you will get to meet me... I am especially good-looking, humble, modest, and pro-DO. Did I mention modest?

ha ha ha ok good. You are in GR right? see ya friday!

I bet you are! I interviewed with you and was hoping to hear back. Well, I did. I got a 3rd interview. Going back on Friday, hopefully we will be classmates!!!
That is totally better than a rejection! I hope the 3rd interview goes great! Good luck!!

Congrats to those accepted!

Has anyone that interviewed on 3/29 heard back yet? I interviewed that day, but haven't heard anything or had an update on my online status. Fingers still crossed tho!
