MSU isn't the only school that looks beyond the stats. I know someone with ample research experience, a great GPA, and a very high MCAT score who was wait listed by his alma mater, the University of Michigan, and someone else who had a lower GPA and scored 10 points lower on her MCAT who was accepted. I can't make sense of it but I wouldn't go as far as to say their process is irrational or that it seems like they pick names out of a hat. Members of ADCOMs are intelligent, accomplished individuals and deserve our respect, even if we don't always understand or agree with their decisions.
That being said, if you really want to know why you were wait listed, you should contact the ADCOM and politely ask for their reason(s).
Best of luck.
I never used the word irrational. I was just adding to the fact that there are some high stats people on the waitlist and of course stats aren't everything, if we are talking about the same applicant who is sub 30 MCAT its because her premed advisor took the U of M adcomm out to lunch, wined and dined them and spent the entire time telling them about this amazing applicant with such a crazy lifestory. And U of M loves life experience and unique applicants. I haven't really been disrespectful and I ask that you look at the username before you put words in someone's mouth. That being said, I've clearly stated there is method to the madness and I will definitely call and ask just out of curiosity at a more appropriatw time in the application cycle.
