I hope my March interview doesn't put me at a disadvantage. I know it's been repeated both here and on their site that date does not matter, but I'm still having anxiety over this. So excited!!!

I'm surprised I received an interview invite today. Didn't think I would get anymore. Excited! Anyone else interviewing in April?

got one too! Just as a left an interview at different school. Pretty surprised

same here pretty shocked so late in the process! However I am very excited!!

rejected today, from pre-interview hold. good luck to rest of u

I'm waiting in anticipation and excitement to hear about the acceptance calls from last night . . . 🙂

Could any current students shed light on how many days/week we are required to be on campus? Assuming I (hopefully) get the GR campus, I'm considering commuting from Kalamazoo, and I'm trying to figure out how feasible that would be.

It's changed for the new semester (1st year here) and now we have maybe three or four days a week where we have required events on that day. Maybe less. Hours of required events are low, maybe 4-5 per week or so. That was a lot higher when we had anatomy lab, and I think it gets higher next year with all the pbl. Even if you skipped lab there are still pop quizzes so you need to go to most of them, which are twice a week at two hours each (quiz at the beginning).

It's up to you, but I would not recommend commuting. You'll lose a guaranteed 2 hours every day you head to school, and will be discouraged from heading there if its optional but beneficial. That may not sound like a lot, but in med school that could mean the difference between having no free time that day and having some. Of course that all has to balance with how important it is for you to stay in Kalamazoo.

Thanks for the quick reply Acoustic. 3-4+ days/week seems like too many days to commute from Kalamazoo, but there are a lot of reasons why I should stay here. At least now I can make a more informed decision, so I appreciate it.

Also, have a lot of students successfully waived Biochem and Molecular Bio/Genetics?

I think it is definitely doable! Use the 45 - 50 min commute time (each way) to listen to lectures (downloaded to mp3 or streamed via mobile internet thru the car stereo). If you commute with a partner, you can quiz each other or discuss topics learned in class . . . there are ways to make the commute time beneficial rather than just lost time . . . just sayin 🙂

Kalamazoo, I'm thinking about commuting to GR from here also. At least for the first semester. We might be able to carpool. I'll definitely let you know my plans when I figure these things out. May be a while, though...

Long time reader and first post on SDN. Got the call last night at around 6:30pm, and conditional acceptance email about an hour ago. Interviewed 2/16 at the Grand Rapids campus. Congrats to all others hearing good news!

Congratulations!

It's definitely possible to commute that, but it isn't without sacrifice. You can download mp3s of lecture and listen to them, but from my experience I end up just zoning out on long drives or not turning on the lectures. I used to commute a lot in undergrad. It would take discipline, so whether that's worth it to you is entirely up to you. An hour commute is kinda on the border for that I'd guess.

I think there was 1, maybe 2 people in GR that passed the waiver tests. I don't think barely anyone took them. Even though I would've had less work if I didn't have those classes, and I'd taken both before, there was a difference between medical genetics and medical biochem that made taking the classes worthwhile if even just as refreshers. I heard a lot of 2nd years say that if you can pass the waiver exam then the class will be easy for you anyway, and a repetition will help if even just a little when it comes to boards.

Yea, the commute is about 45 minutes from my house. I've timed it on several occasions just to be sure. Even so, that's a lot of car time each week and certainly a deterrent on those "optional but helpful" days. Unfortunately, for me, a lot is going to depend on where my wife finds work. Should know more in a few months. :luck:

When are campus assignments and how likely will you get your 1st choice?

From what I remember, and you can double check on MSU's accepted students site, campus assignment process begins on April 23rd with deadline for submitting a preference being may 5th.

I am also curious on relatively how many students get their 1st choice campus

Can someone discuss some of the pros and cons about spending the first two years at Grand Rapids and East Lansing? Like cost, differences in lectures, etc.

Congrats! I interviewed with you! Unfortunately, I have not heard back yet. Which one were you?

If you check last years thread, you'll see that more people wanted GR. Who knows if that trend will hold.

For those that have been alternate listed, don't lose faith. People will get in to other schools that they prefer and your time will come 🙂

Good luck to all! :luck:

Hey guys!
interviewed on 2/23 in EL
got the call from Dr. Maurer on 2/28 while i was at work! Couldn't believe it!

When I interviewed a year ago, Dr. Maurer said that only one person did not get their preference. I don't know what the number is for the current class, but I am in EL and I don't know of anyone that did not choose to be here.

Do you have any idea why?

I don't have any numbers or stats or anything so I won't comment on that. I agree with the EL poster that I haven't yet come across someone that has been dissatisfied with their campus placement. Idk if that's because they're both great campuses that are very similar that will make you happy either way, or if everyone got their first choice. I think more along the lines of the former, which is good news for anyone worried about campus placement.

You shouldn't worry about campus placement, unless it will affect your family or something like that (which you can list as a reason to go one place or the other). The educational experience is very nearly the same. The only real difference is new building vs old building (people tend to like fancy new things, even if they are very similar to the tried and true old things like they are in this case) and local city environment.

In GR you'll have more of an urban feel, probably helped by Secchia not being on an undergrad campus. I can't really comment on the EL feel. With the building being with all the hospitals it sometimes has this "you're going to work" feel and not the "I'm going to class" one. This is largely a personal decision. Pick where you think you'll be happiest.

Keep me posted. I haven't made any decisions either, and probably won't until after we get our assignments.

I too have been reading this forum for a while now. I interviewed with you guys on 02/16. Congrats on the acceptance! It's amazing that you heard back so promptly. Great job. I hope to hear back soon. Does it usually take about two weeks for a decision to be made or does it depend on the order at which the committee reviews our files?

Thanks for all the recent posting, Acoustic. Definitely helpful to hear perspectives from current students.

Does anyone have insight into approximately how many seats for the class of 2016 have already been filled? Just curious 🙂

I doubt the class of 2016 has been filled. Even if it has been, there are still going to be people who drop their seats for other schools. Other Michigan schools are still interviewing into April.

i interviewed late January and still haven't heard anything yet.
Should i send them an email? or just wait?
Anyone else in the same boat?

Yeah, you're probably right about the class not being full already, especially since they are still interviewing through April. However, I couldn't imagine giving up an acceptance at MSU CHM for any other medical school in Michigan . . . even U of M 🙂

They interview through April with open slots available for each, so the timing of your interview won't affect your chances 🙂 Don't allow that to cause any anxiety . . . you'll be just fine 🙂

Does anyone have suggestions on how to kill a few hours when I get to Lansing the evening before my interview? Places to eat? Things to do?

The next upcoming decision date is March 14th. I'm getting a little anxious (it's a bit irrational, since I expected to wait at least 6 weeks). Is it bad if I call a few days later, if I don't hear on 3/14? If not, when is a good time to call? (I knew on interview day they said after 8 weeks, but maybe someone with experience can comment on this). Oh, I interviewed 2/16 (as I mentioned above).

If they said to wait at least eight weeks, wait at least eight weeks. Chances are it will just come across as pestering if it has only been four weeks and you are already calling to ask after their progress, and they most likely won't give you any new info other than "Keep waiting and have patience." I know it is hard, but if you stay quiet you won't hurt anything, and if you call it might be annoying. My advice is to wait at least wait the eight weeks. I probably won't take that long though; it took five weeks for me to get the call, if I remember right, and they said to my group to not call unless it was after six weeks of waiting.

Don't be alarmed if you haven't heard anything even a month after your interviews 🙂 If you haven't heard anything yet, your file is still being considered and it just may be that the adcom is waiting for more applicants to complete their interviews in order to determine the best fit candidates. 🙂

Hey everybody!
I just got the call and I've been accepted!!! :biglove:
