Just like last year (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=776981&highlight=applying+to), I thought it might be a good idea to have a list of all the programs people are applying to, so that we can ask each other program specific questions and know what programs are likely to pop up in the interview/acceptance/rejection threads.

Feel free to either PM me your programs if you prefer, or just post them here, and I will compile a long list of them all! 🙂

I already sent this list to psych2011 but I'd thought I'd post my list anyway in case someone else is applying to these programs. We can bitch about long and frustrating this whole process has been and secretly hope the other person doesn't get in. 😀

 I love the honesty.

I am. We have York in common, though I'm applying to the Clinical-Developmental program there. UVic, especially, is a kickass school. I'm rooting for you, friend.

👍

I heard the Clinical-developmental program at York is pretty kickass too 🙂. I'm applying to the Clinical neuropsych stream. Good luck to you too!

All schools should be on there now, that took some time, haha. We have a lot of schools represented. For the future: it's easier if you write the full name of the school so that I can put them all in alphabetical order, because I don't know all the abbreviations. 🙂

I wonder if we are applying to the same POIs...

Because, if so, I wish you the best but secretly hope you suck and don't have a chance in hell.

There. Fixed it for you.

I see a lot of University of Denver!!! I'm applying for the Child Clinical program there, and I know someone applying to the neuro program!

Wow, we have som fierce competition here, haha. At least we have a good chance of knowing when interview invites go out. 🙂

For those applying to U of Denver's clinical program: Did you know that they added a diversity statement recently? I started back in August and they didn't have that statement on the requirements, then I only found it last month. Just out of curiosity, when did they add that diversity piece to the requirements?

Is this actually required? A lot of my apps had an optional diversity statement. I hope it's not actually required because I definitely didn't write one.

it is required 🙁 for clinical applicants only. here's the link:
http://www.du.edu/media/documents/graduates/psych_bio_stmt_11-12.pdf

when did you access the biographical statement?

Ughhhhhhh my bad. I don't even know what that question means.

It's odd because I got an email from DU saying my application was complete and has been forwarded for review. Maybe they just didn't include the statement because it's only for child clinical. I suppose I'll call them tomorrow and see what's going on. I really don't want to write more stuff.

should i be worrying because i didn't receive that email? although online it says my app is complete.

I guess I'm confused.. I wrote a personal statement, and am pretty sure I answered those questions, though I don't see anything specifically mentioning diversity. And I definitely didn't see that in early November/October when I applied.

I also received an email updating me about my status at DU (in my case, they were missing a letter of rec. which has now been taken care of).

Another question: I have a Dec-15 app that has an optional personal statement (more like a diversity statement). I am not sure what to do about this one. On one hand, I don't feel as if I grew up very disadvantaged etc. On the other hand, I kind of had to write something similar for another school I applied to, so I can just modify that essay and send off. I'm just worried that it'll look like padding/BS, OR that they will look less favorably at my application if the statement is not included, so I'm going back and forth on whether to submit anything. Thoughts?

You should have received the initial confirmation e-mail from DU letting you know that your application was submitted. After that though, a graduate admissions counselor is supposed to send a follow-up e-mail letting you know whether or not your application is missing anything. These follow-up e-mails are really behind (the e-mail says it should take about two weeks, but it could be a couple of days). So if you received the initial confirmation letter, then you should be fine. In another week or so you should get official confirmation saying that (hopefully) everything has been received and is complete.

Thanks for answering our questions about DU! Do you happen to know more about the diversity essay that the child clinical program wants? I started my application pretty early and I swear I didn't see anything about this. This is required right, not just optional? My application is already submitted and sent for review so I guess I have to figure out a way to get the essay in, right?

does the diversity statement explicitly ask you to describe ways in which you've felt disadvantaged? do you mind sharing the prompt?

I know that the diversity essay is a new addition this year, but unfortunately I don't know when it went up on the website. Yes, it is required. I don't know whether your application will be considered without it, but I know that the program is doing a HUGE push for diversity within research and clinical work (not necessarily for individual diversity like other universities but how your work is or will take into account diversity), so if you can work on it over the weekend and maybe e-mail it to the department on Monday, I really think it would be worth it.

And for what its worth, that prompt was really odd and after asking a few people what on earth the department was expecting, no one really had a clear picture of how it is supposed to be answered or what was expected.

Great, thanks for clarifying this. I've been trying to figure out what I'm going to write about since I heard we needed this essay but I agree, it's an odd question. I have worked with some very diverse populations so I'm probably just going to say something about that work. Not that I'm trying to gank ideas, but this sound about right for those of you who also applied to the child clinical program?

This is the prompt from the website:
Applicants to the clinical child program are also asked to include a one page essay on
the following questions. How is your thinking about research and clinical work
influenced by considerations of diversity (broadly defined)?

Wow I'm applying to all the U.S. schools you are. Are you doing neuropsych? At least this makes me feel like I picked logical places to apply 🙂

Yup you've got it...all neuropsych! I was going to apply to the other schools that you've listed as well because of their neuropsych focus, but couldn't find any POIs that I was interested in.

(Btw - Washington U. St. Louis is not the same as Washington State University 🙂)

Yeah, I wrote about how my clinical and research experiences with very diverse populations have shaped my thinking about research etc. I agree that I don't really understand what they want, but I figured that was the best I could do, and it is something I have been thinking about quite a bit, so I don't think it came out forced. :xf:

Nice selection! We share a handful of schools: Georgia State, Missouri-Columbia, Tennessee-Knoxville, Louisville, and Memphis. 👍

Considered Columbia but the funding there isn't stellar.

I've gone back and forth on Columbia myself. I've seen conflicting information about Columbia's funding. On one hand the Insider's Guide (2012-2013 edition) says Columbia offers both a 100% tuition waiver and an assistantship/fellowship, while the APA Guide to Graduate Programs in Psych says Columbia only gives a partial tuition waiver with a meager stipend of anywhere from $1600 to $12,000. I believe the Insider's Guide is based on 2009 applicant data, whereas the APA Guide is more recent. However, I've also seen reports that the funding for Columbia's clinical psych program is terrible, whereas Columbia's counseling psych program is much better. Anyone know anything more about Columbia's counseling psych program and its funding?

I really wanted to apply to UTexas--Austin (counseling), U of Denver (counseling), Boston College (counseling), and Univ of Minnesota (CSPP), but they all only offered partial tuition waivers and in some cases (e.g. Denver) only a $5000 stipend!

Lastly, I've come to regret not applying to Southern Illinois Univ--Carbondale's counseling psych program (deadline was Dec 1). I had initially disregarded SIU--Carbondale due to its rather rural location, but I've heard it's a really good program, and there was a great POI for me there. I think I've reached the point in the application process where I've submitted a bunch of apps and am freaking myself out over any regrets or possible mistakes I've made along the way.

I understand the freak outs. I actually haven't completed all my applications and feel compelled to drop some schools... though I know I'd regret it once the deadlines pass!

As far as Columbia, one of my former classmates was accepted to their program this past Fall. She said the funding is really tricky. Although she is not paying for tuition, she is not receiving any stipends. Apparently it changes from year to year.. so I'm not sure what is guaranteed. 😕
