2011-2012 Psychiatry Interview/Match Thread (Invites, Reviews, etc)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I still have six programs that I am anxiously waiting to hear from, but they're all pretty competitive places. So, I'm not sure how realistic it is to hope that other people are cancelling interviews there. And yet, I do hope...

WOW, smh, talk about playing the game raw.....Its safe to say if we havent heard back then we are apart of the "status: wait til someone cancels to schedule interview" crew. Either that or just "Im too lazy to send this guy a rejection letter"
The former seems much more likely than the latter. It only takes a couple seconds to send a standard rejection letter, and I'm sure its easier on everybody(including the program) to reject people rather than have them linger in the applicant pool. Now how many more interviews will be granted, who knows. I'd guess very few to the top tier places (who's gonna cancel MGH) but probably a decent number at the less competitive programs as people cancel and the over zealous realize they no longer want to interview at all 20 places they've accepted.

I also think its reasonable to assume that some programs are on a different time frame and simply have only sent out they're first tier invites and have a number of interview slots sill available. I only say that becausr based on my experience i haven't heard from one program that I considered the first or second least competitive program of the 25 i applied to and not to sound cocky but I can't really imagine not getting an inteview offer there.

I think the problem this year is that people are holding on to more interviews than normal.
There are 3 people from my school applying to psych (vs 20 radiology 15 ortho 5 ent 5 plastic... it's sad). I just spoke to them. While my psych colleagues are competitive and they are US citizens from a good US school, they are interviewing at 15 programs each.
Judging from the posts here, I think a lot of the people here are also interviewing at at least 10-12 different places.
Why is that? Most of the IM, FM, Neuro, and Peds people in my class are going to less than or at most 10 interviews.

Totally agree with you, my class has similar stats in terms of specialty choice. And 7 of us are psych, many of which have a gazillion interviews that have yet to be cancelled. I think it has a lot to do with the word on the street that "psych unlike most other fields has a ton of variability in terms of program flavor, and the only way to know where you'd fit in is to go on a ton"...thats what Ive been told by people above me. And honestly, I've found that very true.

Yet and still I would be very surprised if I actually completed more than 8-9 interviews, I'm 3 down and weary already (and broke). :(

If I can't figure out where I'd see myself by that number, something is very very wrong.

I only have 2 interviews so far: Creighton and Rosalind Franklin. I got 12 rejections and one of those "we'll review your app later if anything changes". i'm still waiting to hear back from 85 programs. i'm getting worried since its already half way thru november.

I think AMG's do not realize the preference (legitimate I reckon) they get compared to Caribbean and then IMGs. Since we are at the bottom of the pile, we need to jump through many more hoops to get invited. Being an old IMG with a less than stellar USMLE record (but good amount of clinical and research experience at home and in the US) I applied to 127 programs (out of 174, I counted). 6 invitations so far...

Looking at NRMP data from 2011, there were 1,965 applicants in total for 1,097 categorical psychiatry positions. Of those, 698 were US seniors who filled 640 spots. This left 1,267 others (recent US Grads, Canadian, DO, 5th pathway, US-IMGs, non-US IMGs) competing for 457 spots, or a 36% fill rate. How IMG's get ranked compared to DO or Canadian grads I don't know. But it seems the competition is fierce.

Having 6 interviews as an IMG is probably pretty good considering the numbers, but you can't have too many as an IMG from what I've heard especially since you're competing with Canadian and DO grads.

I'm not entirely sure how it plays out historically, but this year at least, DO's are doing very, very well in psych, at least in interviews.

I've been on about 6 interviews now, and every single one has had more DO applicants than MD ones. 3/4 were DO's at one place 4/6 DO's at another. Etc, etc.

From what I've seen in the past an IMG having/doing only 6 interviews most likely wont cut it in terms of matching. But rarely does an AMG NOT match if they decide to rank only 6 programs. In fact only 15 of them (of the 586) who had at least 4 programs on their ROL didn't match and it appears to be only partially related to how few programs they ranked. So yes, I would agree, its much more fierce.

bear in mind that many IMGs prematch and this includes prematches at some well known programs (e.g. Duke, Yale, possibly Mayo) which skews the match results for IMGs as many of those remaining are applying for ultracompetitive programs that don't offer prematches, overestimated their competitiveness and declined a prematch offer, or weren't good enough to be offered a prematch at bumble**** community hospital, nowheresville.

also US seniors ranking tons of programs are more liked to have been advised to do so by their school which is why it looks like they are not matching (when of course theoretically your probability of matching increases with each contiguous rank) and those matching with only 4 ranks were probably advised that they were competitive enough to get away with doing so.

What I find interesting is that in the overall match stats, FMG's have about the same chance of matching as a Previous MD Graduate...around 40%. DO's are around 75% (not increasing, despite the increasing DO numbers, which means more DO's are going unmatched each year).

On the pie charts on Page 37, they show that there is a 48% unmatched rate for independent applicants (which includes FMGs, MD's who graduated prior to that year, DO's, Canadians...everyone who's not an MD. I wish they broke this down better...

However, amongst Independent Applicants who matched, 87% of them got their top 4 choices. Only 13% went below #4 on their rank list...about the same as the MD's at 12.8%. So it looks like if you're going to match as an independent graduate, you have almost the same chance as an MD grad (in the whole match, not specialty specific). If you're not going to match, you're totally screwed.

It seems to me that the sweet spot for "Independent Applicants" is >7 interviews, but < 16. Everyone Indep. applicant who ranked 13-15 places matched. That's pretty good. Still, your chances improve greatly once you hit 7 or so.

For psych, the other stuff doesn't seem very significant. There isn't much of a difference between # of research projects between matched/unmatched MD/FMG's, for example. I'm sure if you crunched the numbers it would come out to "not statistically significant." So, it looks like that for psych at least, research and other supplemental stuff like that doesn't typically play much of a role, if any.

I love match stats analysis. Way more fun than sports scores...

prematches...
Good point above about the prematches. Also it neglects to account for DO's who decided to prematch, or do the DO match, which happens 1 month earlier than the MD one, and if you match in the DO match, you're withdrawn from the MD match.

I doubt the DO match affects psych much. Not many people do the DO psych programs, simply because there are so few of them, and they're in relatively undesirable places, have few fellowships, and it's not that hard to get a decent ACGME spot these days.

...agreed, we're Psychiatrists, we love analysis period...add that to the "positive neurosis" of conceptualizing the process to a very important life decision ---> you make a great discussion!

I wasn't going to ask this, but since you all seem so well versed in match theory, I feel its not too much of a request.

I am in the lucky position of having received a good number of interviews (12 in total), but will probably only be able to go to 7 of them, owing to logistic and financial factors. I am an IMG and its already costing me a fortune to go to the US three times (once for CS, once to interview in December, and most likely again in January for Step 3), and have found that internal flights are more expensive then expected.

As it stands, I am interviewing at Yale, then Vanderbilt the very next day, then the following week wednesday to friday I have Emory, Duke and Case all in a row. The week after that I have Harvard South Shore and NJMS, before going home.

My question - is this enough, or should I spend an addition $450 to get to another interview I have been offered at Robert Wood Johnson. It would mean going all the way up to NYC after Vanderbilt and coming back down for Emory. I like the program, but practically speaking, I am not sure if it is worth the money. Any thoughts?

I vote that if you have the money go for it. Better to give yourself all possible chances being an IMG. If you don't match this year, it's going to be another expensive round of applications next year.

Agreed. Although with 12 invites at some good places, you're probably a good candidate...I'd still err on the side of caution...

I have no idea on your strength as an applicant but to me wasting $450 >>> not matching.

Also, watch out for scheduling interviews close together.
There might not be a flight out from RDU to CLE at night (at least based on priceline.com)

Looking at the timing of that, hope it wasn't part of the big, accidental send out and then withdrawal of invites that happened yesterday...

Yea- That was one of the nastiest things I've seen yet on the application trail. I can see how the first two emails happened, I guess. But the third email clarifying that we were all rejected was titled "Interview at Penn Psychiatry Residency", briefly raising my hopes that it was the second email that was in error before I opened it and found out that I was really really rejected this time:rolleyes:

Yet another thing to add to the 8 billion other reasons not to be in Philadelphia.

Yep, unfortunately I was one of those "retractees" also. Thank God I wasn't in the least stunned (or dissapointed) by it. ;)...one thing I learned about this process is that programs are much more likely to know (than we are) how good of a fit we'd be. And my rejections were from places I couldn't see myself being apart of anyways.

I think in the end (for most of us) it will work out perfectly....at least for me I wont have to worry about my right brain choosing a school for its name/prestige rather than how well I'd fit...

At this point, my (premature) ROL would look absolutely RANDOM to an outsider

As someone who went on seven interviews and didn't match, you can guess what my advice would be. I ended up canceling a couple of interviews that, in hindsight, I most likely would have matched at (in one case, I know I could have matched there because I re-applied the next year and they loved me :) ) because I was tired of the travel/expense.
Interviewing is a huge pain, but not matching is so much worse. I'd probably aim to go on at least 10 interviews, personally.
(The second year, I went on 13 interviews, and yes it was awful, but I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice).

What's wrong with Philadelphia?

Many things....and the only people who tend not to think there's something wrong with Philadelphia are Philadelphians and (maybe) Baltimoreans (as philly is a bigger better baltimore)....Both have big institutions that bring tons to the city (Temp/Penn/Jeff/Drex vs. Hopkins/MD) but the overall lifestyle can be very depressing and leave a bad taste in your mouth. ;) experience.....

Not really. The cost of living is MUCH lower than NYC, Boston, DC, there are tons of good places to eat, shopping is really accessible, and you get to know your neighborhood which is rare these days. Where ever anyone ends up, you make the best of it and it's your choice if you want to let a place make you miserable. Comments like that aren't necessary when people may really want to go to a particular city that you may be bad mouthing, and some people may just end up there and you are bad mouthing their next four years. Keep an open mind and maybe a tighter lip. And, I am NOT a "Philadelphian." ;)

Nope, I can only share MY OWN experience, this is a forum where you can take it or leave it. I am a Philadelphian. And hence I use the words 'can' or 'may' (be depressing). not 'will' be. Being a native I can confirm why MANY people wouldn't think of it as the most ideal place to start your life or raise a family. Again, there are MANY reasons to not be in Philadelphia, just as there are many very good reasons to avoid NYC, Boston etc. However, Philadelphia may have a higher proportion in context with those who lurk studentdoctor forums (such as good schools, # of VIABLE communities, and opportunities that promote a physician's lifestyle)....the only factor that clearly distinguishes Philly is the lower cost of living and after visiting many other cities, I now know why the premium is less here. All of the cities you mentioned above also have accessible shopping, good places to eat, and parts of civility between neighbors.

So, please get off your soap box with your "open mind and tigher lip". I live it and know the difference in what Philadelphia can offer compared to many other big cities...

The reason threads like these are useful is because people post their honest and frank opinions about programs, cities, and people involved. Participating in this thread requires people to not feel threatened by negative comments about places/programs that they hold dear.

If someone slams a town you love or a program you think highly of, feel free to post your own review, if it's relevant. But no one should take any of it personally. If someone posts a negative review of my residency or town, rather than getting my feelings hurt, my reaction is "glad that person won't rank this place highly... sounds like s/he'd be really unhappy here..."

We're talking about psychiatry residencies, folks. No one's spouse or child is getting insulted here.

I personally don't care for Philadelphia either. But absolutely love Pittsburgh. Many feel the opposite. Some love both and some love neither. Vive la différence...

Thats so funny because id actually prefer to be in Philadelphia than Pittsburgh. I was very dissapointed by the lack of diversity. At least I could get that in philly. But according to forbes my assessment is of the minority. Pitt has a very viable future apparently and has the potential to be a mega city in terms of migratory pattern and demand. It was not my cup of tea however and I couldnt consider western psych for that reason.

I don't like either of them, lol. Too far north, and way too big. Why people pay a premium to live in a crowded, crime ridden concrete jungle is beyond me. Give me some acreage, mountains, rivers, and peace and quiet, thank you very much.

Hmm... interesting takes on Philly. Thanks guys! I was just curious because I will be heading out there for an interview in January and was fascinated by why people may or may not like the city. Having lived on both coasts now, I'm pretty sure I'd much rather end up in Cali/AZ, but obviously have to go on a diversity of interviews and see what the best "fit" is, #1. And then location is #2.

So if you had to describe Philly in a few words, and Pittsburgh in a few words, how would you guys describe both cities?

Thanks.

Lived in Philly for 4 years. It is a manageable and affordable city compared to nyc. Great restaurants. Blue collared feel despite having Penn and other universities. Unfortunately, very litigious. Always felt a little bit like new york wannabe, but that's my opinion.

Not sure about Pittsburgh. We used to call the area between Philly and Pittsburgh: pennsyltucky.

Not all cities are crime ridden. I think cities like new york city or boston have a lot to offer. I personally prefer to walk and take public transportation instead driving everywhere. I love the outdoors too, but I am not a fan of suburban sprawls and new housing developments that lack character and history. I think everyone has his own preferences, so luckily not everyone will rank the same program as his first choice.

I know, and I'm definitely considering a couple of larger cities on my list, but crime rates are typically higher in larger cities. In 2010, Pitt, for example, had 55 murders, 1500 assaults, 1200 robberies, and almost 3,000 burglaries. That is a lot. By comparison, Morgantown WV, about an hour or less south of Pitt, had only ONE murder, 68 assaults, 22 robberies, and a whopping 187 burglaries.

If you can find me a large city that has a lower crime rate (per 100,000) than Morgantown, Burlington VT, Charlottesville VA, or Gainesville, FL then I'll concede defeat. Until then, I personally prefer smaller cities.

I'm certainly not saying that everyone should live in a small town. Quite the opposite. I know some people enjoy larger cities, I just don't see why.

I agree with you on the housing thing. If you notice, all the small cities I picked (which are all ones with fairly strong psych programs), are small towns with a rich character and history of their own. And I definitely prefer a larger city with a train commute...but these often come with a hefty real estate price tag. New York and Boston are GREAT cities...but they're also VERY, VERY expensive cities. For me to get a 2 bedroom 1500-2000 square foot apartment in NYC...it's simply cost prohibitive. For 1/3 of the price we could BUY a 2000-3000 square foot HOUSE in a smaller town, and be able to afford to visit NYC and actually do stuff there a few times a year. \

Which is my personal preference. Small town + easy access to larger cities = Gold.

Let's please not turn this into a debate (not that we would, lol) on the attributes of the various programs/cities. I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other. It's all up to your personal preference. Some people love Philly, others don't. I happen to fall in the later category...
