2011-2012 Psychology PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, does anyone have any more information on USC? It seems like there was an interview on 1/13 but it also seemed like maybe there was more than one interview weekend and invitations are sent out gradually.

For anyone who interviewed there, do you know if there is another weekend? Or does anyone know if more invites may go out?

Thanks!!
So I interviewed at USC last year and they tried to say there were two interview dates but really they picked all if their candidates up front. And application date did not make a difference either, last year I applied on the first of Dec and got an interview invite on the 19th. They made a primary and secondary list of candidates from that first group. Maybe sometimes there are exceptions, but I believe everyone can probably cross them off your list if you did not receive an invite at this point

It doesn't seem that they've extended invites yet, but does anyone know the dates when Rutgers PsyD, St. John's Clinical, or Fordham Clinical will be doing interviews this year?

Thanks!

Just out of curiousity how many people have applied once and got no interviews and then applied again and find themselves getting interviews?

I am preparing myself for the big let down of full rejection but the thought of attempting this again is quite overwhelming if my chances are even more grim the second time around

I think the chances of getting accepted the second time around would be even better than the year before provided you've been productive. Join more labs, get more research experience, try to publish/present, use the time to retake the GRE (if you need higher scores).

Last year was the first time I applied and I only got one interview. This is now my second year applying and so far I have two interviews, but I'm expecting more because not even half of my schools have shown up on the forum yet.

Don't get discouraged. This process is crazy by anyone's standards. Even if you don't get any interviews, you should still apply next year. In my experience, applying for the second time was MUCH easier than applying the first time. I already had the support of letter writers, I already had a personal statement, a CV, a writing sample and GRE scores. Any aspect of my application that I already had completed, but wanted to improve upon, I simply tweaked. Much easier the second time. Trust me.

Were your recommenders willing to send the letters again or were they disappointed?
Also did you apply to any of the same schools twice or all new schools?

Thanks so much for the wisdom

I agree, the second year applying is much easier. You know what to expect, and you have most of your "ducks in a row". As far as recommenders, they are usually quite aware of how competitive and unpredictable this process can be so I doubt they will have a problem re-submitting a recommendation. Also, another year gives you the chance to increase scores that might have been a little under where you would like them, as well as the insight to start planning WELL in advance. I started preparing for this year's applications in April lol.

Just keep moving ahead, keep positive, and if you are prepared enough trust that you will find a fit eventually.

I have also been through this a few times -- My first round of applications I had NO idea what I was doing (or what I wanted to do) and only got one interview. I got my GRE scores up, got some more experience and applied again -- received 3 out of 4 interviews, and was first alternate at my top choice school (but the first offer was accepted, so I didn't get in). It was disappointing, BUT it actually ended up opening a lot of doors for me so I have much more experience this time around. And in hindsight, I'm very that I didn't get into some of the earlier programs b/c I hadn't really honed my research interests yet and probably would have ended up with 5 years of "eh" work. Hoping this will be my last time, but the point is not to give up after one year of disappointment -- clinical PhD programs are THE most competitive programs to get into (tied only with veterinary programs, I've heard). Good luck everyone 🙂

Has anyone heard from UC Berkeley or UCLA?
I think I saw on the cafe site that interview invites have gone out from UC Berkeley & UCLA. is this true? 🙁 Also, is Yale done with their invites? There's only a few days left in January and it's making me worry that I haven't heard from a lot of my schools yet... Eek! Good luck, everyone! :xf:

My letter writers were way excited to help me out (one actually helped get me a job for this year) and nobody was disappointed. I actually did drop one of them (a grad student who did not have her Ph.D yet) for someone much more well known that I met this year, thus, proving that a second year of submitting applications can really boost your application.

About half of the schools I applied to last year (n=5 N=10) made it on to this years list (N=15). I was really worried about this actually, but these schools were such a good fit for me, I couldn't ignore applying to them again. (I was told by someone who is not very informed that these "repeat" schools would throw away my application since I was already rejected from them last year -- this is NOT TRUE!)

Match and fit (with a POI and a school) are among the most important parts of your application. If you fit with a school, apply there again, they aren't going to blacklist you or anything lol. As proof, I have thus far received two interviews. Both at places I applied to last year.

...sorry if this is a ridiculously long post to a very simple question.

UCLA interviews went out yesterday, and since they do things by adcom and not POI I'm guessing that was it... maybe they will be notifying more people today, but after today I wouldn't hold your breath 🙁

Hello everyone,

I am writing this post with somewhat of a cathartic purpose, as much for you as for myself. I'm sure like me, you've been watching the recent interviews thread on SDN and TGC like a hawk. I'd also guess like me, you've been experiencing some extreme emotional highs and lows the last few days as you've heard or not heard from your schools.

I just wanted to tell those of you in my situation that upon reviewing some of the dates from the interviews I have received, it seems there is quite a variety in when they are sent out. Better put, I've noticed that the dates posted on TGC as interview received tended NOT to overlap with when I received these emails (in fact, sometimes they were off by up to 10 days). Why am I telling you this? Because I don't want anyone else to needless suffer should you see your top school having sent out interviews to someone on TGC....it seems by in large this process is by PI, not by the full program. I'm guessing many of you out there already know this, which is why you've been PM'ing each other POIs, but just wanted to let others be aware of this.

The past six months have been stressful enough on all of us, no need to add it. Best of luck to you all.
This is good feedback. Additionally, I think some of the programs (at least the ones I've contacted) are starting to get a little frustrated with the inquiries based on forum information. I can't really blame them. Prospective graduate students are just incredibly resourceful, lol.

Received: 1/20
Date: 2/17
Mass email from director of communications
Details coming in mail.

Hi all- more bad news to bear. Notre Dame (clinical) is done extending invites according to the graduate program assistant.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

I got a call from my POI at Clark University yesterday. Unfortunately, there was something wrong with my voice mail, so I had no idea she left a VM and assumed that that missed call was a telemarketer! She sent me an email this morning asking if I had received her message from yesterday and when I finally was able to listen to it, she invited me for an interview!!! The interview dates are 2/17 and 2/19.

I'd be happy to share my POI via PM.

2nd timer here. I applied to 5 programs last year with 0 interviews. This year so far I have 2 interviews (and 1 rejection from my 'safety' school which surprised me) and haven't heard from the 9 other programs.

Like people already mentioned, 2nd time is much easier in that you will have a better idea on how to handle things and what it takes to prepare for the process. Do your best to improve GRE scores and gain research experience and you should have much better luck the next time around as well.

Also, last year I spoke with a POI (who is pretty much a rockstar in the field) and he reiterated these same points. It even took him 2 years to get into his 'dream' program.

It's amazing to see how many people are playing the waiting game together. I am starting to get discouraged just because I have heard nothing and everyone else in my program has at least one interview (I am in a masters program).

I was wondering if anyone was applying to university of south carolina? It only appears on gsc once years ago for an acceptance. I can't find anything on the website about interviews.. or anything. I applied to work with an experimentally minded faculty member so she may be waiting to make sure there are no experimental students to consider as well.. but I assume they do interviews.. anyone else apply there?

I want to say thank you to everyone who has done this before responding to my post and making me feel a little less rejected!

It seems the overall consensus is to try try again but do something in the time being. I have already taken the GRE's twice so I feel like I should not do this a third time, right?

I have one years research experience already but maybe I should focus on getting something published?

Thanks for all the advice! I am sorry if its annoying that my threads are taking up space but I feel this community has the best insight into this process

The University of Alabama PhD Clinical will have two interview dates: 2/3 for child and law track; 2/10 for gero and health track.

psyapp: another alternative is to do a masters. I know people don't want to hear it, but a masters shows that you are capable and if you work your butt off you can show just how much you can get done. I think these days publications are sometimes expected. Posters are probably becoming standard...

I think the key for some people is what kind of research experience you have. I now know this after going through a masters.. I was a paid research assistant and oversaw undergraduate research assistants at my undergrad. I had no idea what it took to design and do research until I entered my masters and had to complete multiple studies throughout the program. Did you do an honors thesis? Masters programs are good options, especially those with funding... They have later deadlines, most of which haven't passed yet.

Don't feel bad. I am applying the third time (1 interview the first time, none the second) and I took the GRE five times.

Actually I doubled in bs of biology and psychology and did two internships. I was thinking about doing an honors thesis but I just didnt have time if I wanted to graduate in five years, Im kicking myself though for just not doing it.

I think you might be my hero
I hope the third times a charm for you and I am sure it will be!

Hi Everyone, I just got an invite from:

Suffolk University - Clinical
Interview dates - March 2nd -3rd
email from department

This is my first time applying for a PhD and I was worried about what my next steps should be for next year if I were not to get accepted anywhere. It's good to know that people have kept on trying and seem to do better each year. This forum is a life saver. Good luck to everyone!

Invite from Simon Fraser via email to interview for Clinical Psych Masters (required to apply to MA program if you don't have a masters, then apply internally to Ph.D. once you complete Masters)

Skype interview in next two weeks or in-person interview on 2/10, no departmental preference about which type you choose.
No prior phone contact from department

🙂

Also got an invite from Simon Fraser University (Canada) via mass email. Although just to clarify the post above, you have the choice of in-person interviews on 2/10 or Skype interviews that will take place OVER the next 2 weeks.

LSU Clinical PhD Program
Personal e-mail from POI
Interview date 2/10

The University of Alabama PhD Clinical will have two interview dates: 2/3 for child and law track; 2/10 for gero and health track.

Did you call to find this out or have they extended invites already? I'm sitting on edge for the law track and wondering if its time to find a corner and cry yet :scared:

I'm a third timer. So sick of this process. Right now I have interviews at LSU, University of Miami, and UNC Chapel Hill. Haven't heard anything from the other 7 I applied to, but at this point I kind of assume they're rejections.

I'm a third timer too. It sucks applying again. It gets easier but it's a bit demoralizing. So far I am 1 for 4 (I am assuming because I haven't heard from 3 of them) and the other 6 schools I applied to have not yet started contacting people. The weirdest part to me is the fact that the only invitation I have received so far is from the most competitive program I applied to.

This process makes little to no sense.

Seriously, so demoralizing and so nonsensical. I do think that my applications have gotten progressively stronger, but it's still so tough. I got one interview the first year, 3 last year with one acceptance that I declined (Hofstra), and now three so far this year. I don't know, I'm so over it.

how many applicants do POI's generally invite to interview?

I think it definitely depends on the program and the number for total applicants. I know that often times about 5 will be invited to interview for a single spot. Last year at the UMass Amherst interview, each POI brought 5 applicants per slot. So there were 25 people interviewing for 5 slots.

I think though if a program gets an enormous amount of applicants, they probably will bring more in to interview, maybe up to 10 or 12 for a single slot. However, it sounds like this year many programs are using phone or Skype pre-interviews, so I would expect the numbers at in-person interviews to be smaller.

Either way, by making the first cut to attend the interview means your chances just went up significantly! 😀

I'm not sure if others have insight into this, but again I'm sure it varies.

School name: Univ of Indianapolis
Program type/track: Clinical PsyD
Date received: 1/20/12
How were you notified: mass email, interview packet will be sent out over mail
Interview dates offered: 2/17/12 on campus

Has anyone else applied here? I'm mostly applying to PhDs but this seems like a good safety PsyD but is it worth it to pay for it?

Hi all - thanks for the posts about the re-applying cycles. I may be headed towards that direction in the near future, just very frustrated because I (like you all, I'm sure) just want to get in the swing of things and not have to wait another year to start! fingers crossed for the next group of schools....

on that note - TGC said AMERICAN U and CATHOLIC U sent out invites in the recent past (yesterday, i believe)....thoughts on crossing them off my list? or should I hold out hope?

thanks

Suffolk University, Clinical Ph.D Program
Notified 1/20 via mass email from department
Interview dates: 3/2 and 3/3

I would like to know about American U as well. Wondering how the applicant was contacted for the interview - mass email or POI?

Ahh! Just saw that Yeshiva Clinical PhD (Health Emphasis) was posted on TGC!

If you are on this forum as well - was it mass email? :scared:

Hi everyone,

I was just curious if anyone had heard anything from the Clinical Psychology programs at:
Harvard
Yale
Boston University

Good luck everyone!

Hi,
I spoke with the grad coordinator at BU on Wednesday. She said that faculty will star contacting people, via the phone, today. Best of luck to all of us.

Not a peep from Harvard.

Loyola University Chicago
Child Clinical PhD
1/20 via mass e-mail, more details to be sent by mail
Choice of Feb 3 or Feb 24

Eeeeeeeeee! 🙂

Feel free to send me PMs about my POI, etc.

I called Indiana University today, they are holding Counseling Ph.D. interviews on 1/26-27 or 2/9-10. Looks like those offers already went out...

Ugh. I was holding out some hope for American...I would give it until early next week then cross them off the list..same w/ Catholic, though I didn't apply there...

Just saw a Berkeley phone call go up on TGC for an interview invite! This would be consistent with their website timeline that they were going to contact folks about interviews today...

If that fortunate soul is on SDN, I would be very grateful for a PM with who your POI is, or whether the call was from the department?

Thanks in advance and congrats!
