If you'd be willing to share, I'd like to know why you think this is the case vs IM becoming more competitive/getting better applicants. Thanks!
It's more of a guess than anything. And it's watching y'all talk about how you're going on 15-20 interviews each.

I can assure you that this year is
extremely competitive for IM.

2 years ago, people with 25% of my credentials got double the interviews I got this year!

I don't know dude(tte)! That would make me feel better about myself! but that's what people say every year about every field! I don't think the overall (big picture) applicant pool has changed much!

It's not like this year we have Martians applying. It is the same applicant pool (USMD, DO and FMGs)! some schools may have received more and some have received less!

Just a guess, like yours!

I assure you this is not the case. I have numbers and data lol

This year is crazy.

It's the same overall applicant pool for all specialties, but how the pie gets cut can make fields more or less competitive. I think EM, radiology, and anesthesiology (anecdotal evidence) has contracted this year in favor of IM... probably a smart move by the student body, because radiology and anesthesia salaries and job markets are set to plummet, while hospital medicine trumps EM with similar pay and much more stable hours.

No rejections today. I am waiting on:

1. OHSU (pleaaaaaaase send me an invite!) 2. UChicago 3. UTSW 4. Pitt 5. NYU 6. Boston U 7. Michigan 8. WashU 9. MSSM

Any realistic shot at any of these? I am really hoping for OHSU and/or UChicago. I am hoping enough people cancel in Jan.

My impression has been that our applications were stacked next to each other at a lot of programs (although I didn't apply to California and East Coast programs so your list was bigger than mine), and we seemed to get interview offers on the same days at a number of them.

So....I am going to live vicariously through your OHSU invite! Creepy? Absolutely. lol. I'm pretty sure there was a time when The Man held my app in one hand, and yours in the other.....my app went in the trash, and yours went into the "limbo" pile...I think December will be your month of redemption!

p.s. - do yourself a favor and pull your application at UTSW (your new baby agrees with me)

When I was in Cleveland, I contacted OSU , I have been told that I am not rejected, but not invited either.

They told me priority is given for AMGs, and for IMGs who are sponsored by staff from their institution.

This notwithstanding, I was told I was not rejected because they thought I had a good profile, and they dont want to reject me, in case some of their other options cancelled, or could not make it.

In a nutshell, it seems that silence from OSU is a really positive thing, even for an AMG.

Oh sorry, neglect what i said. I just noticed that you guys are talking about OHSU, a different place. My bad.

Duke said this in their rejection:

for further consideration, it would be
necessary for you to apply during the next application cycle in the fall of
2012.
---------------------------

This is really offensive ...

If aprogdirector is right and Duke ends up not filling (which has happened in the past), you should totally send them an email saying "howz bout now, bitchez!!" 😀😀

I dont think aPD's post applies to duke. They are very big deal in the US.

there is an underlying scorn in their rejection. I get it Duke. I am not good enough.

Actually, now that you reminded me about it, I am re-reading their rejection, what in Zeus name is this?

Apply next year for further consideration? are you for real?!?!?!!!?!

They're a big deal, but they're gunning for the same applicants as the bigger deals and the comparable but nicer deals in better locations. The fact that they didn't fill before goes to show that it's entirely within the realm of possibility that even prestigious institutions can overreach, under-interview, and get pwned.

Oh, Duke really didnt fill in the past?? 😵 wow

anyway, I am an IMG so I am a second-class to start with. But a nicer rejection would have been nice. I am a human after all 😀

Wait, where are you from exactly? Are you a AMG or FMG? Sorry if you've said before and I missed it.

FMG. But even Duke interviews FMGs usually (I did lots of research on the high end places that I applied to)

Lol, I guess you typed it out right before I entered my post. Yeah, academic institutions are aholes like that. Don't worry, you'll match at a good place. And honestly, unless you want some super competitive fellowship, none of this will matter in the long run.

Thanks a lot. I totally agree that highly competitive places should give the priority for AMGs. Its totally understandable. But I guess that Interviewing a couple of promising FMGs wouldnt hurt anyone, actually, they could rank us lower, and if AMGs opt to go to other places, those of us who are ranked higher (in the bottom lol) could get a spot eventually.

I heard from one of the PDs once that although one FMG might be good on paper, the programs might not have any experienec with the specific isntiution that the FMG came from, and its a risk to take such applicant. For high places, they really dont need to go far down in their rank list.

Regarding fellowship, my aim is GI and Hepatology (hopefully a double board), and its pretty competitive, this is why I aimed at getting a good academic program that could potentially help me go where I want.

GI is super competitive from what I am reading around.

What are you aiming for?

Hospitalist for a few years then business school. Then, gonna weigh my options for either directly going into health care management or working for management consulting to gain a broader exposure to the industry as a whole before jumping ship into health care management. I was contemplating not doing a residency, but given that it's only 3 yrs, it's probably worth it to gain a bit more credibility within the system.

Definitely. and you will have the boards in your pocket. The way I see it: I love medicine, I love teaching, and they will pay me for it!?!?!?! Thats a helluva deal 😀

Likely got same message from Yale today as you, though it isn't a 100% rejection. "Unfortunately, we will not be able to invite you to interview for a position at this time." Very much down, but not completely out...

I got this on Oct. 3

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the Yale Internal Medicine Traditional
Residency Program. Unfortunately, we will not be able to invite you to
interview for a position at this time. We review several thousand
applications each year and are compelled to forego interviewing many
applicants with excellent credentials.

We wish you well in the application process.

A lot of my rejections have said the at this time remark. I counted them as rejections. On a side note, I got an e-mail with the word "invitation" in it to only be wait listed.

I am so mad at myself. I should have done more in med school:shrug::bang:

does every where send out rejections? I still haven't heard from a program even after a call and email.

Hate mail from Boston University in the morning.Seems like 2012 is gonna be one hell of a year.🙁

Boston University yesterday

Hopkins/ Sinai the day before

You are lucky ,mine was put in a shredder.Never heard a word from them.

Well, more of a "we would have liked to interview you, but not that many people withdrew/cancelled their interviews and now we don't have any more interview days." Doesn't matter. I'm done!!!!😀

U of Michigan Rejection today

Dear Applicant:

It is with great regret that I must inform you that you have not been selected
to interview with the University of Michigan-Internal Medicine Residency
Program.

Thank you for your interest in the program and good luck with your future
endeavors.

Mine was a little longer, weird:

It is with great regret that I must inform you that you have not been selected to interview with the University of Michigan-Internal Medicine Residency Program. We have had a significant increase in the number of applicants to our program this year and it has been impossible to interview all of the highly
qualified candidates that we would have liked to.

Thank you for your interest in the program and best of luck with your future endeavors.

Obviously you are a better applicant than me 🙂)

Michigan yesterday… obviously wasn't expecting an invite, but it's nice to have some closure… (also got the longer one, not too different than the slew of other rejections I've gotten)

I called NYU in November and I was told they don't send out rejections. Don't know if this will help with closure, but it helped me!

Ah, ok. Thanks. I wouldn't have gone back to NYC this late anyways, but glad to know.
