Has stony rejected anyone pre interview, or do they wait till later?

Interviewed today! I absolutely lovee it. The students were awesome and the facilities were great.

Super excited to interview! I'm trying to figure out my travel plans and it looks like we must arrive by 8:15am. Their email says to allow 2.5 hours to travel there by train from Penn station. I live in the city, so to avoid the expense of a hotel, would it be cutting it too close to take the first train at 5:47, arriving in Stony Brook at 7:46? I'm not that familiar with the LIRR or the Stony Brook area.

Also, 5am is unbelievably early and that may be more of the limiting factor haha.😴

Someone at my interview day did that

If you take the LIRR to Stony and decide to walk be aware that walking from the train station to the health sciences center is totally doable but will probably take you around 30/35 minutes at a moderate pace. Thats if you don't get lost. So keep that in mind when you are trying to figure out which train to take.

Also tell them to interview me lol

Ditto! I had an amazing experience - the students all seem so happy there! 🙄 Plus, both my interviewers (PhD and MD) were interesting and engaging. Very impressed!

Thanks guys! Do you know if I could cab it from the train station? If so, would I have to call one in advance? The bus seems like it would be cutting it very close.

Did anyone who interviewed at Stony Brook stay with a host? I asked the admissions lady to look into it for me, but I was wondering if a lot of people did this/if a lot of students are willing to host, because if it's not that feasible I want to get a hotel room booked. On that same note, does anyone know/has already asked which hotels near the medical school have a discount for Stony Brook students. A lot of other schools have this, so I figured Stony Brook would too, but I feel like I've bugged the admissions lady too many times in the last week that I should try here first. Please let me know and thanks for your help! 🙂

Interview Invite!

Submitted: Early August
Complete: Mid August (I think around 20th)

Spent a long time on the secondary. I guess it paid off! 🙂

At least 2 of the people there when I was there were staying with hosts.

I submitted secondary on Aug 22nd, Complete email on September 27th! Now I wait some more! LOL

I stayed with a student host and it was awesome!
They had their anatomy test on Monday (my interview was tue) and I got to go to their party the night before my interview and I met so many people. It was really helpful. And my host was AMAZING. I love this school and it really shows when the students love it too.

Nancy Acevedo is a great coordinator and found me a host.

As for transportation getting there... I flew to JFk, took the airtrain to the LIRR, and took it to stony brook. My host was awesome and picked me up but I saw that there were many buses running by the train station.

Best of luck to everyone 🙂

OOS 31 3.8 and your typical extracurriculars

Unless they changed it, I believe it's always snail mail for outright acceptance (I've heard of some rare phone calls). E-mail if it's waitlist. Let's not worry about rejection. 🙂

The assistant dean at my interview said email for acceptance/waitlist, then once accepting you get the fedex. and snail mail for rejection letter.

At my interview day they said we would know within six weeks... Let the painful waiting continue!

I interviewed at SBU yesterday, for the MSTP. I stayed with a student host (four of them, actually), so I had time to chat informally with them.

Impression:
Students are very friendly and willing to help each other out. The first-years I stayed with were pretty busy, but were not hugely stressed and had some free time. The university is on the up and up despite cuts in state funding, as they have gotten some huge private donations lately, and are building new research and clinical facilities including a children's hospital. Pass-fail grading for first years is on the table, but I don't know if it will affect the 2012 entering class or not. The medical school and the university as a whole strongly support the MD-PhD program and the fellows get on well with other graduate students during the PhD years. The MSTP has a very competent and effective administration that is willing to go to bat for its fellows. Interview was very scientifically focused, I didn't get much in the way of stereotypical "why medicine" questions or ethics problems. I think I communicated "why medicine" pretty well in my PS, but not getting any ethics questions was surprising. SBU has some good research facilities, and the area is pleasantly suburban, about an hour and a half from the city. (Some locals seem to think that this makes it really far away, but to a westerner like me, it seems quite accessible.)

TL;DR: A great and very friendly program, and if you don't mind advancing the cause of science from within a windowless ferroconcrete mushroom, there's pretty much no general problems with it that I can see. It remains one of my top choices.

I don't know why it is taking them so long this year - last year, they had decisions already!!!! Accept me stony brook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+1!!

if I did not get any email today.. does that mean.. its a rejection? 😕 🙁 :scared:

I would call and ask - when did you interview?

just called and they said, if i haven't receive anything, just means the committee didn't make a decision on it yet 😳 idk; i interviewed late sept, ppl who interviewed after me (like u guys) received the acceptance letters alrdy.. im still bummed out 🙁 i want to join you guys...

so how does this whole thing work?
like if you get II, they like your credentials (on the paper), so you passed on grades/activities/essays part, and then acceptances are soley based on the interviews/interpersonal skills after?

any MS1,2 who was part of admissions?

No idea, but I definitely interviewed before you; I was on the first day.
