Just interviewed here last week. This school exceeded my expectations. Love the curriculum/facilities/faculty/students. Definitely in my top choices now. To those waiting for interviews, don't lose hope! Grace (asst dean) talked to us about the process and she says that they read all 4000+ apps word by word and 3-4 ppl review your apps thoroughly. So be patient, theyll come😀

For those who interviewed, what did you guys like most about Stony Brook versus all other SUNY schools?
 
what is the day like here? any presentations or tour or anything? I have two morning interviews and am just wondering if anything will be going on afterwards. Thanks!

It was interviews in the morning (or after depending on interview's availability), lunch, tour, brief talks from asst dean/financial aid.
 
For what it's worth - for the sake of completeness - the MSTP interview process is scheduled differently. This year, they had three interviews in the morning and one in the afternoon. Two were with medical school people - one faculty member and one student. The other two were with more research-oriented people. We had the medical school tour and lunch in the middle, and meetings with the director at the beginning and end of the day. The balance of the time was spent with recruitment activities, e.g. tours of labs and demonstrations of teaching facilities. Lunch was with current MSTP fellows.
 
There haven't been any II's lately? I applied to the dual degree MD/MPH program. Has anyone who applied to that program heard anything back?
 
can anyone comment on the school's community service/global health opportunities?
 
I sent in the area emails to NY schools when i was there 2 weeks ago, is it bad to send one again if im flying back from california for another interview?

i'm a current MSI at SBU and I can tell you that there is a large emphasis on global health here. Many of the first and second years take a global health class through the undergraduate side, as well as many, many opportunities to go abroad during a summer or longer period. this is definitely encouraged and fostered here. the faculty are very helpful in helping you find projects to work on abroad or hooking you up with mentors.
 
If you don't mind sharing what were ur stats those who got accepted??
 
I received interview invite recently. I sent in secondary in July, complete late September, and interview invite last week. So it realy did take a very long time. MCAT >35, GPA >3.7 OOS.

Not sure if this is what you mean, but I asked about student-run clinics or anything like that at interview, and they said there is indeed a free clinic that medical students can volunteer at. My student host, who was a first year, said that even first years actually got to do things at the free clinic, not just shadow or fetch stuff. They taught him how to do glaucoma testing.

Can anyone find this info on the website? Because I can't, haha. I'm interviewing on Friday (so excited!!) and would like to know something about student clubs/groups/activities before my interview, but I can't find anything except info about international, research, and MD with Recognition opportunities. Thanks in advance! 🙂

has anyone who interviewed late october receive acceptances yet??
 
I just got an offer of admission from the Stony Brook MSTP! Yay!

I interviewed 19 October, and got an emailed acceptance on 9 November. (Three weeks, almost to the hour.) I was told to expect a formal letter by mail in a couple weeks.

I interviewed October 7th and have yet to receive any decision. I hope I'm not sitting here waiting for the rejection letter in the mail...

According to my non-MSTP student hosts anyway, the process is different in a lot of ways between Stony Brook's MD and MD-PhD programs. While I have heard that SBU has a quick turnaround, I wouldn't panic yet in your position.

Well, I guess I would panic, but that's me being a neurotic pre-med, rather than the rational course of action.

Who knows, maybe the usual policy is to send any final decision by post and it's just the MSTP that does things differently? At this point the MD-PhD program has interviewed somewhere between seven and twenty-two people, which has got to be a lot easier to keep track of and send update emails too.
 
Accepted!

(MD only) Interviewed last week of October. One interview went so badly that I had honestly given up all hope of ever coming here even though I loved the school.

Has anyone else received acceptances, waitlists or rejection notices?

I haven't heard from them since my interview in mid-October...
 
Does anyone know how long we have between getting the packet and having to send in the deposit? I got my email last friday, still no packet yet and I am going away next week.

I forgot the exact numbers but at the interview we were told that close to 50% of interviewees are accepted (this includes those accepted off the waitlist).

There are plenty of both. There are many opportunities to volunteer, either medically related or not. In particular, we have SBHOME, which is a student run health clinic for the medically underserved/uninsured. Pre-clinical students have the opportunity to volunteer, and are generally put on triage duty. They then accompany a clinical student while the patient is assessed and meet with the attending to present the patient and formulate a treatment plan. This is a very good way to get some clinical exposure. People can also volunteer at health fairs. There is an exercise program for children through the pediatric cardiology department, and plenty of other volunteer opportunities that I'm just not thinking of at the moment.

There isn't much formal time in a clinic during the first year. During second semester, 1st years are assigned to a preceptor and spend some time in a clinical setting. I believe 2nd years spend a little more time in the clinic than we do. We are frequently encouraged in specialty interest group meetings to throw on our white coats and hang around out on the hospital floor for a few hours to get a taste of that particular specialty, but I have yet to do that 😳.
