How long is everyone's essays for the hometown and ideal practice questions? I feel like 500 words is a bit much.

My ideal practice essay was about 400 words, while my hometown essay was about 250 or so.

500 words is way too much unless you have something really unique, I'm thinking.

Same for ideal practice- I have a unique hometown (overseas) and still didn't have all that much to say and wasn't near 500 words :laugh:
 
I ended up with about 300 for both. Thanks for relieving my paranoia. 🙂

Now to wait! Come on, Tech!

First interview date will be August 3rd and will definitely have both in-state and OOS, though we have tended to be heavy on OOS applicants towards the earlier interview dates in past years since their admission invites go out at different times. 🙂

GOOD LUCK to all of you. Can't wait to see you around TTUHSC for interview season!!

I think i remember an ADCOM saying this at an ECHO meeting. Since OOS decisions go out earlier they try to get as many OOS interviews through early.
 
I already submitted my primary and secondary to Tech long time ago but on the website of secondary app I still have the gray exclamation mark instead of a green check!

Is something wrong? I called and the person the website has bug. Anyone has the same situation? Been awhile but still not fixed yet. I am afraid they won't know that my app is submitted and completed.

Thanks. 4th in state one. week just got better. Texas Tech El Paso and UTSA have me worried. but hey its only july!

hey do you know if the more OOS applicants in early interview dates is typical of all texas med schools?

Interview! Aug 3! just got the email today

OOS applicant
 
I had to schedule my interview for september. Reason being, dates they gave me i already had interviews or it would have been cutting it close

I really have no idea, I'm sorry. I know other med students peruse these forums, so you might ask around in particular school threads.

For the purposes of full disclosure I grew up in the Panhandle in a small town three hours North of Lubbock. I hated it here and couldn't wait to get away...which was one factor in me choosing A&M as my college in the first place. Truthfully, Lubbock is not all that different that Bryan/CS. It's a bit bigger and less college-town-ish, but as far as amenities it's pretty similar.

I wasn't super excited to come back to the Panhandle, but I loved Tech's med school when I interviewed. I didn't know what to expect coming here and I was extremely surprised. Lubbock is really fine...it's a city just like any other. It's not Houston or Dallas, but it has everything you need and then some. I haven't felt deprived or like I was missing out and what you lack in closeness to a major metropolis you gain in friendliness of people.

The only real negative is the amount of time it takes to get to Dallas. However, the pros vastly outweigh the cons in my opinion.

There is almost no traffic. It's seriously great. I live further from the school than most and it takes me ~13min to drive there at 7:45am "rush hour" and probably ~11min every other time of the day. If you are studying and need a highlighter you can get to a Walgreens and back in 5 minutes from almost anywhere in town. Everyone is so friendly. Really...I'm 3 weeks into 3rd year and over the past >2yrs have yet to meet a professor, attending, resident or staffer who was mean or condescending. People who live here and teach at UMC/TTUHSC do so because they want to and they love it. They aren't here because we are a big-name or famous hospital, they are here because they love the area and the students. You don't have that a lot of times in some of the other places that attract people based on "name-status."

We also have the advantage of serving a hugely diverse population. UMC's Level 1 Trauma Center serves Eastern New Mexico, the entire Panhandle and some parts of Oklahoma, so we get a really diverse and interesting patient population to work with.

We're just a few hours from the mountains! The past two years several groups from our class have taken weekend ski trips in Red River, Angel Fire and other places in Norther NM and Southern CO. It's a nice getaway for a weekend after a test.

All in all, you're going to really like this school and you're going to like the people...almost everyone who visits does. What you need to consider when you choose where you will go is what will work best for you. For me it was having the positive attitude and camaraderie that Tech offered for medical education. For some it's being in a big city. I personally just thought I wouldn't have enough time to care if I was close to a Six Flags or a Sea World or something...and so far I've been right. It's also not so far from Dallas/Houston/etc. that you can't take a long weekend and visit friends and family. However, it's all based on personal viewpoints...so everyone's pro/con list will be a little different.

I totally understand location being a huge deterrent for people when considering this school, it definitely wasn't on my pros list for this school, but believe me when I say you'll be just fine here in Lubbock if you choose to attend. 🙂 The pros of the school and the people and the town far outweigh the cons in my opinion...and I think most people agree when they visit.

Yay for mountains and no traffic!! I grew up in El Paso where there's a bunch of mountains (We're at the end of the Rockies) and I would love that again! I live in Houson now and go to A&M so I sort of got used to the flat land :/ That's pretty awesome! Thanks aggie08 for all that! You just opened my eyes 😀
 
Thanks for the input aggie. Your priorities choosing a school sound very similar to mine and it's very helpful to hear from someone who is already attending the school and living in the city. Now I just need the chance to show my interest in person!

Don't misinterpret, there are definitely NO mountains here lol. Just flatness. Close enough to drive to the mountains for a long weekend, but definitely no mountains on the immediate horizon like in El Paso. 🙂

👍 Spot-on description. I grew up near Lubbock and a number of my friends have said it's the flattest area they've seen in their life after visiting for the first time. I love Lubbock, though. All the things/places major cities have with a small-town community feel. And Texas Tech of course 😉

Quick question everyone: How specific were you guys with the leisure activities essay? I'm stressing over this one (seems lame lol) because I have no idea what they expect.

I'm not exactly certain what you mean by specific...but I used a story about road bicycling to exemplify my leisure activity of exercising. I made that the theme of my essay and then branched into mentioning several different hobbies at the end.

so my app was transmitted to them on 7/6 and i still have yet to hear anything from them though i got the "we have your app email" from UTSA and TT El Paso...is that odd?
 
^ Wondering that myself! I haven't received any sort of correspondence either and I transmitted 7/8..

I hate this entire process.

tech doesnt do email reception.
 
Just got an interview invite! Not at home so can't check the dates but just got the email! Utmb and tech so far!

i only applied to three TX schools (UTSA, TTL, TT El Paso). I only have emails from UTSA and TT El Paso so I was wondering what Lubbock's deal was

Those stats make you seem like the perfect package! Nice job! And the no status thing is normal. For my interview invite to El Paso it took almost a full week for Merlin to reflect my new status. I'm assuming lubbock works the same way.

Interview invite earlier this afternoon!! So excited, love TTU and the med school in Lubbock. Chose Aug. 5th.
