2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
re: Southwest consortium

congrats!! I heard from them too 🙂 And freaked out when I saw 1/19 listed as OH and the alternate date (I thought this process has finally turned me mad!). And if you re-read the e-mail carefully, you will see this:

"We have received and reviewed your application for the Southwest Consortium Predoctoral Psychology Internship (SCPPI) for the year 2007-08."

WHAT???!! Did we travel back in time? Lol she must be a new admin asst. Poor girl! Must be so overwhelmed by all these interview invites and now her box is probably flooded by anxious psych students' emails 🙂 PS Where did you guys see the 1/12 date in the brochure? I can't find it!

Is anyone still waiting to hear from SW consortium?

i DID notice the 2007-8 typo (OOPS!). and what about the 3 missing attachments? you're right - i think she's as frazzled as the rest of us! LOL

the brochure mentions OH on the 2nd and 3rd Wed in Jan - so for 2011, the dates would work out to be the 12th and 19th.

Hello all, this is my first posting.
I have two interviews (pacific clinics and Springfield hospital center)

More rejections than I can handle 🙁 waiting on 13 more but not feeling optimistic 🙁

Has anyone heard from UCI CC? I see they are on the list as having sent out interviews, but i haven't received anything!!

Finally! A child site interview. Andrus, via email. It's non personalized. Dates are: Dec. 28, 30 and Jan 4th (clearly, winter break is not high on their priority list)

Got an interview at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center!! My first "real" interview (have one w/ the Navy, but as I understand it that is kind of a given)!!! I'm so EXCITED!!!! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Only dated offered was Dec 20th, but they expressed some willingness to reschedule if absolutely necessary.

did you get invited to the Adult or Child track....

interesting, my invite to the Child track was through a phone, with a few possible dates...

Seriously, these days i'm pretty sure i'm more stressed out then my clients (and more OCD about checking email then the most severe of the OCD cases). Maybe this is why they say "psychologists are crazy." I get it now. Its not that we are born this way...the process of becoming a psychologist can make the most grounded of us crazy! Sorta kidding???

Maybe our clients have it down. They drink, smoke, eat excessively, etc. to escape problems. I should develop one of these "coping strategies" since i've run out of good ones.

I tried "coping" last night. It didn't help... :d lol

This is my first time posting here and I hate for it to be a complaint, but this whole business is seriously frustrating and unpredictable.

I applied to 18 sites nation-wide, mostly VAs and college counseling.

I have heard back from 4 sites. All rejections.

The anxiety of the wait to even know if I have a chance is extraordinary.
The whole process is irritating and I wish there were something better available.

So there. I complained. And I don't feel better. But it's good to know that I'm not alone in this.

Complain away! That's what we're here for 🙂 And don't let yourself get down. Most people are still waiting to hear from a number of sites (20 on my end). It ain't over till it's over! :luck:

Adult. They prob have different protocols for the diff tracks. Good luck on your interview!

I applied to the SW consortium with interests in their VA tracks and haven't heard yet. Interviews from Palo Alto and Northern Cali VA today though!🙂

Ok, I'm crossing our fingers for both of us then! Congrats on California sites!

Has anyone yet heard from University of Washington Medical Center or Hennepin County Medical Center? Thanks!

After the initial, "sorry we offered you an interview, this is really a rejection," from VA Maryland Health Care System/University of Maryland School of Medicine, I got an email yesterday saying, "yeah, we did say no interview but now we are offering you an interview."

Don't know about the first site but I'm waiting on HCMC as well.

Thats terrible they are jerking you around like that, but hey! CONGRATS on the interview! I wish some of my sites would change their minds like that! 🙂

OMG! How confusing! Congrats on the interview though!

Haven't heard anything so far this week! It's driving me nuts! I've heard back from 4 out of 24 sites so far!

Yeah for you! It is about time that they sent out interviews. I haven't heard so I guess I didn't get one. I am ok with that though.

I feel your pain +pissed+ I haven't heard anything this week either, and have only heard from 5 of 25. Here's hoping we both hear something (perhaps good) soon!

LOL Dragonstyle! That emoticon totally depicts exactly how I feel every time I check my email (and apparently I like to torture myself because I have been checking it like crazy!). Good luck to you! I hope you hear good news soon!

Congrats! was the invite by email or phone? would you also mind sharing the dates?
thanks🙂

Thanks! The invite was by email although I was asked to call to schedule an interview date on 12/22/2010, 1/5/2011, 1/12/2011, 1/19/2011, 1/26/2011, or 2/2/2011.

Yes to the compulsive email checking and yes to wanting to throw the computer out the window when there is nothing new. Worse still, I have a smart phone, which beeps everytime I get an email, and so every time I hear that cursed ding, I get both excited and a sick feeling in my stomach.... 9/10 its a stupid mass email from the university or other unimportant news.

This is such a ridiculous process, and I'm so excited for it to be done....

Thanks to everyone who gave recommendations on contacting Children's Hospital Boston. I think you are right and I should wait until the end of the week- if I haven't heard anything Friday, I suppose it will be time to send an email.

Interview offer received yesterday. Dates are 1/11, 1/19, and 1/20.

Received a rejection from the Texas Child Study Center in Austin. Shocking - I have received 5 interviews thus far and now 4 rejections. My interviews have all been at fairly competitive, APA sites. The Texas Child Study Center is a non-APA endorsed site, which had fewer than 10 applicants last year. How does one get an interview at Bellevue & a rejection from a site like the Texas Child Study Center? This whole system is unbelievable. Oh well 🙂

I've asked myself the same question, as there really hasn't been a competitive disparity between the sites that have sent me invitations versus rejections. I simply chock it up to differences in "fit" between my application's strengths/weaknesses and the programs' training styles and goals.

11 sites down, and if I can go 50/50 on the remaining 6, I'll be quite content with my overall interview tally. Here's to hoping the next week goes very well for all of us.

Just received email notification for an interview at Children's National Medical Center.

Has anyone yet heard from University of Washington Medical Center or Hennepin County Medical Center? Thanks!

I'm waiting to hear back from University of Washington School of Med too. I think they do an open house. Any idea when it is?

... I guess I'm pleased that most of the sites I'm waiting on (17) have not been mentioned in this thread. Of course I'm just making things up, and I feel like I'm jinxing myself just writing this in this forum, but it *seems* like the sites I haven't heard from are more academic. Given that I've had quite a bit of academic experience so far (though I started in an overly clinical program) I feel like I might still have a chance of matching... grrrrr. Who knows?

It could also be that most of my sites are neuro, and the neuro reviewers could be taking longer reviewing apps, etc. It's kind of funny to what lengths we are going to crack the code here with interview vs. rejection offers. Trying to make structure out of chaos, reason out of randomness/unreason, etc. Crazy!

Good luck to everyone this week!

MY DAY HAS JUST BEEN MADE!

I just got an interview at one of my top sites: University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. I applied to their peds rotations!

The email was not personalized, but it was extremely nice. It contained instructions to call on Monday, December 13th to schedule an interview. It also did not mention which rotations I am being interviewed for. I'm assuming I'll find out when I call on Monday.

I'M SO EXCITED! :soexcited:

Congrats Ringo! Glad to hear people getting exciting news. Good luck with the interview!:woot:

So one of my friends has run into a serious problem and I'm posting on her behalf. She has so far only one interview and several rejections, for neuropsych focused internships. She found out this morning from a psychologist at her current practicum site that her most important letter of rec, from a prominent neuropsychologist, is "messed up." Meaning it has her name at the beginning of the letter, but any subsequent references are with another name of a previous practicum student (um, mine, actually) and the end of the letter talks about her desire to be a generalist not a neuropsychologist, which is true of me but absolutely NOT true of my friend. Any advice on how she can handle this situation? The psychologist at her current practicum site says the letter basically sounds as if this prominent neuropsychologist doesn't know her at all, which is far from the truth.

Just got my FIRST invite for an interview! University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital!!!! Stoked!

I will see you in Bethesda in less than a week IsItOver!!! Are you interviewing on the 14th or 15th?

Wow, that definitely is a "messed up" situation, and I completely feel for your friend. Perhaps she could have the recommender write her another letter, and then she (or, even better, the recommender himself/herself) could contact sites she hasn't heard from to explain the situation and send over the revised letter?

strange!

Did you apply to adult or peds rotations? That might be the reason for a difference in dates. Or maybe they don't want to overwhelm the poor woman that will be scheduling all of us crazy people!

I hate you. lol Just got my rejection  Enjoy the warmth for both of us and good luck on your interview!!!

I think she has grounds for asking the neuropsychologist to write a new letter. It may be possible to change it on the portal (contact the IT helpdesk people) but if not he can email it to each site individually. This may be pain for him, but assuming he is a nice guy I imagine he will feel very bad and want to help (and not have his error cost her an internship spot!). Fingers crossed it works out... :xf::xf:

Just got an invite to the SLC VA! Interview is for January 21. Good luck today everyone!

Just got an email invite to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. 😀

Five more sites to hear from... this waiting really is insane, but thankfully it's almost over! Good luck to everyone today!

I hate you. lol Just got my rejection  Enjoy the warmth for both of us and good luck on your interview!!!

Thanks, IsItOver and I'm sorry about your rejection. The first news I got about internship interviews was a rejection from my top site, so I know how bad it sucks. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you hear some good news soon! :xf:

First post here.

Got an interview from Elmhurst hospital-Mt. Sinai yesterday and Columbia Uni today..

I think she is perfectly within her right to ask for a new letter... However, it could be a tricky situation, since the neuropsychologist may not even be aware of the mistake. I would agree with asking for a new recommendation, and vaguely telling the letter writer that she heard from a site asking for clarification about her LOR and that there was some concern that her letter somehow got mixed up with someone elses, and checking with him/her if he/she can fix the problem. I would also recommend contacting the sites she has not heard from letting them know that she is aware of a problem with one of her letters, and finding out if they will allow her to correct the mistake by sending the corrected letter (or if he/she won't write a new one a new letter from a different letter writer). What a terrible situation for your friend!

Hang in there, and congrats on Springfield! I am oober jealous!

Trying to hang in there, but this is hard 🙁

anyways...yeah I am excited/scared about Springfield... this whole process is so weird...

GOOD LUCK to you 🙂

Okay, a postdoc where I work just said that his rejections came early and invites came later. Here's to hoping that generalizes to everyone on this forum!
