2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Markp, congrats!!! It is my dream to be able to say I've been accepted to an internship... especially going through this all for the second time. So glad you don't have to do the rest of this horrendous process!

Also, those answers are hilarious. Definitely updated my FB status with my favorite... 👍

Believe me the 60 page application was no picnic... but better than gnawing my fingernails off because of APPIC! Good luck!

Yeah, sounds like it's a bit of a trade-off: much less paperwork with APPIC, but a significantly longer waiting game component.

Congrats on securing your internship, and best of luck once it starts up.

Louis, glad to know I'm not the only one (read: couple) doing the couples match. My girlfriend and I are both applying to internships, although she is applying to VAs and I'm applying to College Counseling Centers. We made a ridiculous map with all possible internship sites, then found some good "clusters" with several sites for her and several sites for me, and then researched each site to look at fit. One good thing is that we aren't competing with each other for spots. Keep us updated as to how your couples match goes. The same goes for any other people doing the couples match.

When we were starting the process, there was almost no information on here about couples matches of the past, so lets try and keep information going to help future couples!

My girlfriend and I are both still waiting to hear back from sites about interviews. I'll keep the board updated.

While I have no first-hand experience, I can at least relate a couples match success story--two individuals from my program participated in the match a few years back, with both applying to only a handful of sites in a specific geographic location. Both, who were actually under the same advisor and had similar clinical/research interests, ended up matching at the same site. So it's definitely possible 🙂

I got an email from Bay Pines and a call from UCSD/SD VA (addictions and trauma tracks) yesterday, both where interview offers.

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

The Tom Petty song, "The Waiting" has been stuck in my head since yesterday. It got in my head because I was thinking about waiting to hear from sites! 🙄 It's a good song, but it being in my head is just making the waiting worse.

Perfect for the way I feel! The waiting is especially bothering me today. Any of the counseling center people here anything?

U of Montana stated that reviews begin Dec 1st

Another question: I really dont know much about the "rules" as far as what you're allowed to tell the sites and what you're not supposed to talk about during the interview. If I get any interviews (here's to hoping) and let's say I'm talking to my top choice (of the ones I'm interviewing with) and if by the end of the interview I'm feeling good about it can I tell them they are my top choice? Can I say something like "I definitely want to come here"? Or would that be revealing my ranking choices - which I think we're not supposed to do? Is that right? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to rules, in general..

Thanks,
AD[/QUOTE]
I can only answer for the the top choice question and the answer is NOOO! That can actually eliminate you from being ranked at all. It is supposed to be blind and that would make it not blind. This happened in the past and is the reason why it is the way it is now.

It is a little difficult to keep track of where everyone has said they have heard from with so many posts. I figured I would do my bit to thank those who have shared information so far by compiling a list.

I'm guessing from your 2nd post that you applied to the child track at Dartmouth... yes? Wondering because I applied to the neuropsych track.

Got a rejection email from Nationwide's Peds Psych track today. Boo.

My OCD preferences thank you!

What? I thought (in sly commercial narrarator voice) "nationwide is on your side"

Children's Hospital of Michigan (Peds Track) email invite today.

Peer got interviews for peds/ child tracks at the following sites yesterday: Children's Mercy, Nationwide Children's, & Phoenix Children's

Thanks Madeincanada for compiling all of the info!!!

Yes, I applied to the child and family track.

Cornell and Long Island Jewish/Zucker Hospital were the ones I have heard from already.

Existenz, when is your interview with Zucker? How early did you apply (you received an interview offer the day I submitted 🙂)?

Received an interview invite from MercyFirst in NY.

Did they email you? Today? There's already a couple of sites on here that seem to have started inviting people while I have yet to hear - only makes me check my email even more frequently!!! 🙁

Jan 12th is my day. I expect it to be freeeeezing. Coming from Cali this will be hard. I had all my apps in before Halloween.

I posted this before, but I got a rejection from FMC Rochester, so you can add that one to the list.

Thank you for making the list, madeincanada! I sadly have not heard back from anywhere yet, but did get an email from the Wisconsin DOC that they will be contacting us on December 3rd with decisions. That was nice of them 🙂

I would be curious to hear more from the person who heard from Creedmoor, as their deadline for applications wasn't until the 15th. When did you apply? When did you hear from them? Thanks! 🙂

I received an interview invite by phone for the UCSF Public Service and Minority cluster track.

Based on prior years I was thinking UCSF would come out today. I haven't heard a word, but I applied to the Clinical Assessment and Interventions cluster, so hopefully I am still alive. I really like UCSF :xf:

I received an email today from VA Pudget Sound- Seattle. They don't do interviews, but I was invited to the open house.

This will probably sound a bit nitpicky, but it might be a good idea to clarify that someone heard from the Puget Sound VA in Seattle. There's actually two Puget Sound VAs, Seattle and American Lake.

Neither do formal interviews either, but I'm assuming will be sending invites to their open houses.

I'm a first time poster but have been lurking for awhile now! This process is so stressful, so it helps to hear from other people who are going through the same thing!
To add to the list, I got an e-mail interview invite to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford last Thursday. Hoping to hear from more sites soon!

MercyFirst contacted me (telephone) at the start of the week (Monday Nov.14). I sent in my application to them on November 1. Interviews are being held Thursdays in December and January.

Thanks for posting and congratulations on your interview. I also feel supported by hearing from others. I never thought I would look forward to Mondays more than the weekends but I am there. I hope many of us will hear news soon. So far I have heard from two (phone interview, interview) sites and am waiting on 20. I heard from one of my sites about interview invites going out the second week of December, but they accidentally included all the applicant's email addresses. By counting up the names ( I know a little OC) I discovered that they had about 150 people apply this year. Last year this site had 90 apply. Wow, thats a big increase, hopefully its just that everybody wants that site this year and not a trend for college counseling centers in general.

I had this happen when I applied to graduate school with all the applicants that were being invited to interview with my respective professor. So I googled each of them so I knew what my competition was. 😎

That IS Crazy 😉 hahaha

I'm practically counting down the hours til it's Monday 🙄 I like the weekends because I don't "have" to check my e-mail every few seconds, but now I'm just getting impatient and I want to know what/if any other interviews are coming my way 😛 Most of mine aren't notifying til Dec. though. Just waiting on two that I should know about before Thanksgiving :xf:

Of the 17 sites I applied to (mostly university counseling centers), the earliest "notification deadline" is December 3rd. 👎 I hope to hear from at least ONE place by Thanksgiving, but it's looking very unlikely.

I feel this way too and I HATE it, this process sucks. 😡
