2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Heard from two sites last week offering an interview via email: UMDNJ and Interfaith.
2/2! I guess I could go 0/18 the rest of the way, but I'm feeling pretty positive right now. Good luck everyone!!!

Hi All - interviews offered at Columbia-NY Pres, Bellevue, and Kings Co. (All adult track)

I actually wouldn't mind because I think i'd stand up well in a googling contest hehe.

People would be intimidated by my mad home renovation skillz since what they would find is my home renovation blog!! 🙂

Congrats on the interviews!!👍

First rejection from Greater Hartford consortium this morning

My Googlers would probably just be confused--my last name falls on the lower end of the commonality spectrum, but I have an identically-named doppleganger who's apparently a dentist over in the New England.

I got that email this morning as well, but it was my second rejection. :scared: No interviews yet, but I still have 15 sites I have not heard from.

Which track did you apply to at UMDNJ?

Had my first site contact me by email this morning. I'm "on hold" aka: no interview from UAB general track. They seem to be very neuro/child focused, so I guess I'm not surprised as I am primarily focused on health psych.

I got a phone call offering me an in person interview at James Madison University CC. I had a phone interview with them last week.🙂

Seems like the contact is starting early this week... :scared:

This is better than my friend who's doppleganger is an erotic photographer!! (True story!)

Sites are likely trying to get as much work done as possible before the holidays kick in.

And yeah, I'll take a dentist over an "adult" photographer anyday. That'd be a fun coincidence to have to explain away during a deposition, especially if said photographer lived in the same city

Aww, I wish I had a doppleganger! My first name isn't terribly common and my last name is very rare. If my name ends up on a list like that, you'll find me 🙄

seems like these invites/rejections are coming in... hang in there everyone!

anyone heard from VAs (other than Syraucse) or University of Rochester yet???

A couple applicants have heard from the Bay Pines VA (not sure which tracks), the SFVA has sent out rejections, and I believe one of the Washington (Seattle, Puget Sound?) VAs has started notifying.

got interview from Harvard Mass Gen this morning

Ooooo fancy. Congrats! And congrats to everyone else I'm too lazy to quote. I anxiously checked my e-mail this morning to find NOTHING! 28 sites and only 1 response (rejection from NE Florida State) so far. I want to know something! grrrrrr +pissed+ lol

Congrats! Which track did you apply to? Did you hear by phone or email?

NP, email. Jan 13 is the date. I want west coast so i'm deciding if i should go or not.

edit: btw, ADDICTED2STATS, UIC is an awesome program I regret not applying to! Dr Pliskin rocks

You are really at no more likelhood of matching applying to 28 places as you are in applying to 15 or 16 places that are good fits for your experiences/goals. I have been told this by numerous faculty and APPIC themselves (they have a little statistical chart that they have posted too), so I assume thats accurate.

Thanks Existenz. I applied to the BMED track at MGH but haven't heard anything yet. I'm very excited about the UIC interview! I've heard some great things from the people who interviewed there last year.

Congrats! Would you mind posting what track you applied to?

Thanks to all for the updates/support, hopefully good news will start to come in soon. My advisors also said that rejections tend to come earlier, especially from sites with arbitrary cutoffs (hours, psy.d., etc). Good luck to all!

It was the child track (at UAB).

Congrats Psychgal!

Thanks CMHpsych- I really like this site because it seems like such a good fit. So I am really excited to get invited.

Existenz it appears you are raking in the interviews- congratulations! I hope everyone on the board will start hearing more good news as well.

Actually, though that IS what they say, last year's stats actually show a peak at both 15 AND 20. The theory is that you are better off sending in 15 GOOD apps, then rushing and sending out a larger number of less-well-put-together apps. I started early, and having done this before was able to give equal and adequate time and energy to all. With over 2,000 internship sites nationwide it is not hard to find quite a few that are a great match if you don't limit yourself geographically 🙂 Not wanting to do this a 3rd time, and having submitted my 15 by the 3rd week of October, why NOT apply to more that I'm excited about? Sure, it costs more, but I'd rather spend more now and match, then do it all again next year!

Personally, I think there should be a cap at 15 sites for everyone. That would limit the number of apps sites get, guarantee that people applying to sites really are seriously interested in them, and reduce the competition (150 apps instead of 250 apps means more time to read yours; only competing with people who want said site rather then competitive applicants who would rank it as #20; etc). But, until that day comes... 🙂

If anyone wants the Stat of the percentage that did not match last year I'd be happy to pride it, but seems like posting said stat will just add to the anxiety. Seems like less sites are loosing funding this year, which ought to help. :xf::xf::xf:

Got an e-mail rejection from Utah State Hosp. Not broken up about this one, it was a last-minute addition. Good to know though. Keep 'em coming!

I'm on the wait list @ UAB for the adult neuropsych track. Anyone have any idea how likely interview cancellations are or have any experience with this? 😕

I pretty much can guarantee that the slot after Dec 10 will be open and they will dip into the pool of wait listers. Last year a friend got notified there was an opening for the later slot. this year that slot is Jan 7

got an invite for Vanderbilt-Department of Veterans Affairs Internship in Professional Psychology. NP track. They have 2 dates in Dec available.

hey ya'll who heard about UCSD/VA ... was that for a specific track? i'm dying to find out if i've gotten in or not. haven't heard from them at all!!

I heard from UCSD/SDVA last Thursday by phone. I'm applying to the substance abuse and trauma tracks. They interview about 100 people, so it probably takes a while to notify everyone since they are calling. Also, they could stagger their interview offers (I've heard this is common).

Awesome - Addicted2Stats - thanks for the encouraging words. fingers crossed... i'm hoping to get a call!!

I love you for doing this 😍 Northeast Florida State Hospital should also be in the "not offered" category.

To those of you who have heard from Columbia - NY Presbyterian and UMDNJ... were those adult or child tracks or both? Thanks!

Got a rejection from UIC Child track today 👎

Hello! This forum makes me anxious but I'm completely addicted to it at this point so I figured I may as well post. I've heard from 2 (of 20) sites so far: I'm set to interview at Greater Hartford VA and Mass Mental.
