2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For my southern site, I gave them several dates that would work to try and be as flexible as possible and I stated that I understood if an alternative date could not be granted and that in that case, I would love to set up a phone interview (which they had offered). Just my two cents. I don't think it hurts to ask to come on another day if they don't specifically say they can't/won't do it.

Ditto on this. I've had to reschedule 3 different interview offers - they gave me one date (with no alternative options offered) and I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Each of the 3 was very understanding and the rescheduled date fit with my schedule perfectly.

I just got a rejection from the Central Arkansas VA. That is my 6th rejection and I have 2 interviews. I am still waiting to hear back from 9 sites. Should I be worried? I am really worried about only having two interviews so far. Someone on here said 7 was the number that was ideal. That means I still need five interviews. I am really feeling discouraged. I only applied to places that I really felt were a good match, but apparently many of the places I applied do not view me in the same way. 🙁

Wanted to add to the other comments on this issue here. I worry about the same thing (not matching) but I try to keep in mind that the numbers aren't really the issue. There have been people in my program who interviewed with 8-10 sites and didn't match; and those who had 1 interview and matched (and it was their top choice). It really can go either way - do your best, be yourself, and look for the best fit. I like to think it'll all work out. 🙂

This process is so weird, I've got rejections from less competitive sites I though I was a great match with, and then some interviews from places I thought were a reach.

Agreed! Same thing is happening over here. My guesses as to where I would get interviews at have been pretty far off, but generally in a positive way. Right now I have 6 interviews, 6 rejections, 1 site withdrew from the match, and am waiting on 3 others. I hope those three send out info soon so I can finalize travel plans!!!

I'm waiting on....
Univ. of Tenn. (St Jude's track)
Child and Family Guidance Center (Topeka, KS)
The Watson Institute.

Anyone hear from any of these?

I'm still waiting for 9 places... Currently I have 7 interviews and 5 rejections. I'd like a couple more interviews and I'll feel a little less anxious I think.

I'm still waiting on 13 sites :scared: Fortunately I have 4 interviews and 0 rejections thus far, but 2 of those sites were the least competitive on my list (at least according to applicant/interview/spots ratios on APPIC). I just wanna start hearing from more of them already! But I know most university counseling centers will go right up to that December 15th deadline.

Rejection via impersonal email this morning from Cherokee Health Systems.

But....

Invite via personalized email this afternoon from IU School of Medicine! Excited beyond belief!! 😀

So do folks think one should ask a site in advance about bringing luggage along, or just show up and hope that they can accomodate? Obviously it is not ideal to show up with bags, but sometimes it is just not avoidable...

Ditto. I've simply stopped trying to make any predictions or assume there is any rhyme or reason to the overall process (at least that is currently-visible from our limited vantage point). I'm guessing (and hoping) things will be a bit clearer to many of us after interviews are finished.

I just got a rejection email from UCSD/VA. I applied to child track combos. Boo! I figured it would be a rejection.

Hey guys, I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but I just received a call from the San Francisco VA asking me to interview. Very excited about this one. Looks like I'll be spending at least a week in California. 🙂 Good luck for others who have applied there!

I applied to the adult, so maybe I'm still in luck...😕

It seems to be rolling offers or something for the child tract at St. Lukes/Roosevelt. I got an invite to interview over phone earlier today. They offered two days next week (yes, next week) or in January (dates TBA).

Got an invite to interview with U of Akron's counseling center...someone left me a voice mail message about it earlier today. So far I have heard from four places, and have three interviews. I am waiting to hear on nine sites that I applied to.

Received a rejection from the Texas Child Study Center in Austin. Shocking - I have received 5 interviews thus far and now 4 rejections. My interviews have all been at fairly competitive, APA sites. The Texas Child Study Center is a non-APA endorsed site, which had fewer than 10 applicants last year. How does one get an interview at Bellevue & a rejection from a site like the Texas Child Study Center? This whole system is unbelievable. Oh well 🙂

You were probably overqualified. I have heard that some sites will not offer interviews to applicants they have little-no chance of securing since the balls are in the applicant's court when it comes to rankings. 😉

I personally know 3 people who had between 2-4 interviews and still matched to really excellent APA sites with good training. I know that the average number is much higher, but if you interview well and you are a good match, all you really need is one person who really likes you and will advocate for you. That is the beauty of the match!

VERY true. My best friend only got 4 or 5 (?) interviews last year and was freaking out. She ended up matching to one of the premier research internships in the New England area. Numbers aren't everything. Good luck to all. :luck:

I agree...I know someone who had 5 interviews last year and he matched at a site. Focus on prepping for the interviews that you do have and showing how you are a good match for those sites and don't let the numbers and all that jazz keep you in a super stressed mode.

Hey Everyone! I'm a lurker coming out of my cave. Thus far I have 4 Interviews and 5 rejections and still waiting on 11 sites.

I just received an interview from Children's Hospital of Orange County! It was a personalized, very nice e-mail, which make me feel better considering my "Dear Applicant" rejection from CHLA. YAYYY! Good luck everyone!

Hey Existenz, I have a similar problem, but both sites are in my top 3 (ugh) ... what did you decide to do?

I plan on waiting til all sites are in, then just dropping some or doing phone interviews. As of now, there is no possible way to make all the interviews.

In regards to that top site of mine that conflicts, I will call the TD and tell him the situation. I already changed a few dates that were 'full' around like this.

Thats what I tell myself about every rejection

I think that is healthy! lol. I kid you not. I have heard directly from a TD's mouth that they will do that.

The site described was non-accredited with less than 10 applicants the year before. It makes sense that they would "aim low" on applicants (I know that sounds horrible) because they know that a person with any reasonable shot of landing something accredited will rank them low. Thus, they would likely lose that person (and their next few preferences) if they did in fact retain that applicant and rank them highly. So they keep the pool reasonable. It is all very complicated when written out, but the beauty is that after interviews, the pressure is really on the sites to rank wisely. The applicant just submits their dream wish-list with NO (I mean zero) consequences. One of the few nice things about this atrocious process. 😀

Congrats!! I applied there as well, but I haven't heard anything. :xf:

To all you "kiddo" folks out there, have any of you:
Received rejections from: SUNY, Duke, or UNC, or invites from: South Shore Mental Health or CHOP. Any info would be wonderful and greatly appreciated!

So do folks think one should ask a site in advance about bringing luggage along, or just show up and hope that they can accomodate? Obviously it is not ideal to show up with bags, but sometimes it is just not avoidable...

Yeah, it seems inevitable depending on your travel schedule and other interviews you have. I say you should let them know you'll have your luggage...gives you a chance to sort out the logistics of who would be holding it during the interview, rather than trying to sort that out when you get there.

Congrats!! I applied there as well, but I haven't heard anything. :xf:

Yes, keep your fingers crossed and I'll send "get an interview" vibes your way! 🙂 I've heard good things about the site from multiple people.

Has anyone else heard from the North Chicago VA? I'm trying to figure out if they invited all applications for interviews, as they did last year.

Thanks!

I don't think CHOP has sent out invites yet. Last year my friend got notified on 12/14.

Just received an invite from Lancaster General Health in PA via mass email 😀

Congratulations!! Me too. But annoyed that Jan 6th is the ONLY date offered... I already committed to an interview on that date, and the TD at LGH is not flexible (erg) 👎 so I am currently trying to get a new interview at the first site and hoping for the best!:xf:

No word from South Shore Mental Health, at least that I know of!

Got a rejection from Central Arkansas VA and they sent it to me twice, just to be sure...I GET THE POINT

:laugh:This is really painful, but it is funny... UCSD/VA did that to me when I applied last year. They were a MAJOR reach for me, so I pretty much expected the rejection--but I did understand the email the first time they sent it! Hahaaa. Sorry to hear about your rejection though... I hate that part of this process. It's really horrific 🙁.

Got a voicemail from VA Hudson Valley (in Montrose, NY) to schedule an interview. Will call the secretary tomorrow to find out the dates.

Kinda bummed that I haven't heard (yay or nay) from Northern Cali VA and SFVA. Seems like ppl have heard re: interviews, but no recent rejection from SFVA except the one person from early in November.

For those of you who are getting more than 7 interviews, do you plan on going to all of them, especially if they're out of state? So far, I have 8 interviews, and 6 are out of state. I am waiting on 8 more sites (6 are out of state: 3 has optional Open Houses; 3 require interviews) and I don't want to burn myself out with (or go completely bankrupt by) interviews/traveling. How do you decide which site you don't interview? What is the proper etiquette or what is appropriate to say if you've confirmed an in person interview but later on, want to switch to a phone interview instead? Are sites understandable about $$ or would they immediately rank you to the bottom of the list because of this?

million dollar questions that I wish I had answers to

Congratulations on the VA Hudson Valley interview! Do you mind telling me when they called you? I'm hoping to hear from them too...

Try not to worry too much about SFVA... it seems like people *just* started hearing today, which is a good thing, and they're calling people, so that takes time. I wish you good luck--that is an extremely competitive site so those who get interviews are extremely lucky (ok, and qualified😀).

I unfortunately do not have an answer for you regarding interviews/phone interviews. My opinion would be that once you confirm an in-person interview for a site, it might be best to really try to attend those interviews (and take phone interviews or decline interviews you hear from, from here on out). I am sure the reaction to changing is site-specific--some sites might completely understand, but I think other sites may be irritated. If you really need to reschedule/not go in person, I would try to keep the interviews at your top-most sites, and try to reschedule phone interviews for your lower sites (well, that's kind of obvious, but maybe it will help). Perhaps others with more experience in this area can chime in more helpfully...

aagman, did the administrator tell you that she will call you back with more information (exact time-on the phone she mentioned a 9-1pm gap)?

i confirmed the date, but she said that she will have to call me back with more info. I'm puzzled about what that could be.

I received a call for an interview today from the UC Davis CAARE Center. Interview dates are Jan 12, 13, and 14.

Not sure if this was posted at the time, but I got a rejection from UC-Davis last week.

Has anyone else heard from the North Chicago VA? I'm trying to figure out if they invited all applications for interviews, as they did last year.

Thanks!

I was offered an interview there (yay!) but I know for a fact that they have rejected people so looks like it is a bit more selective than last year.

BiggE,

The administrator I spoke with offered me interview slots either next week or in January. I told her January would be preferred if possible, as long as it wasn't a problem on their end. The administrator I spoke with assured me my interview status would not be influenced in any way regardless of whether I interviewed in December or January.

She told me she would call me back in the near future with dates and times for January. It seemed from the phone call that they had selected dates and times for the December slots, but had not choosen either for January. Since I stated that I preferred January, they did not share any times slots available for next week with me.

Sorry, I hope that helps. St. Lukes is supposed to be a world class institution - I'm still super excited about the possibilities there. Hopefully the internship will go more smoothly than scheduling for an interview

Best of luck to you!

I registered for this site just to ask:

Has anyone heard, either way, from Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard?

Has anyone been rejected from Center for Multicultural Psych/BU?

Has anyone been rejected from Bellevue?

There are too many threads, so I apologize if I am repeating others' questions.

Thanks! 😀

Thanx aagman, same to you.

I took a slot next week. If i don't hear from here by Friday afternoon, I'm going to give her a call.
What is everyone's consensus on following up with administrators to clear things up?

Rejected from Bellevue, but haven't heard from Center for Multicultural Psych yet

Waiting until Friday and then contacting them seems a very fair and proper way to handle the situation.

Still waiting on both Bellevue and BU. I know that Bellevue has already offered interviews as has BU, but I only remember reading about rejections from Bellevue...

I'm in the same boat... super lucky to have gotten 8 interviews (all out of state) and waiting to hear from 4 more sites. I'd like to make all my visits, but it's getting ridiculously expensive and I worry the quantity of sites may compromise the quality of my interviewing skills (exhaustion=bad).

My plan: two of the sites I'm waiting on are high on my list. If they come through, I plan to look at trimming down on the less-preferred sites and turning some confirmed visits into phone interviews (or giving them up, if necessary). How to ask? I plan to respectfully explain that a conflict has come up, and while I'm still very interested in the site, a phone interview would be much preferred. It's a risk because they may say no - hence I'll only try this with sites that are lowest on my list.

I haaaaaate the idea of giving up sites, but I'm now in the not-in-my-wildest-dreams situation of having too many interviews and probably need to get realistic about what's do-able.

My two cents. 🙂

waitforit - I love your name! Can you, me and ThisIsCrazy start like a 3-word-screen-name club?? lol

If you MUST bring luggage, then yes. However, I would do everything in my power not to bring luggage (last yr I did not see any interviewees w/ luggage). You can leave it at your hotel, even after check out (they have storage areas for this) or rent a locker at the airport. I am sure there are other creative ways to leave your luggage somewhere else as well.

Two rejections today, both sites that were fairly high up on my list 🙁 Stupid grad school.... Fingers crossed that morning brings better news!:xf:

It seems like Lancaster only interviews a small group, so congrats on getting one too! Looks like we may see each other on a few interviews =) let me know when you hear from allegheny!

i confirmed the date, but she said that she will have to call me back with more info. I'm puzzled about what that could be.

Probably your schedule. Sites often will follow up pre-interview to provide a schedule so you know what to expect, while others will provide the schedule once you arrive.
