2011: The most beautiful ---> ugliest Med school campuses...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I personally found UCSD and UCSF on the low end (ugly) end of the spectrum.

They didn't invite me to interview (or even submit a secondary...*sob*) but I think that Chapel Hill's campus is among the most beautiful that I've seen.

They seriously need to add a "photos" tab to the online MSAR (even if the schools will probably photoshop and selectively photograph their facilities to make their campus look "better.")

Yes! I have the 2009-2010 version. Penn has a picture of some guy in a shadowy hallway. wtf?

Johns Hopkins is gorgeous and so large!
Brown is very nice too (new building)
Harvard is nice too (lots of marble)

Judging by your mdapps profile, I would question that.

I must say Stanford is gorgeous. There are major benefits to being located right next to the undergrad campus.

You thought UCSF was ugly when you interviewed there!?!?!

It was gorgeous man! You can see the whole city at certain spots.

UCSD has a beautiful campus! Geez man, what is your standard of beauty? La Jolla is a gem, and the medical school is gorgeous as well...

I think Duke is really beautiful as far as the campus and grounds go. The med school building on the inside is a little sad, but that is pretty par for the course.

I second Vandy, as well.

Harvard is ugly, I don't know what you guys are talking about there.

I've never seen it..but how great can Cooper be? I mean..its in Camden.

Duke is actually building 3 new buildings on the medical campus, a new medical school building, a new cancer center, and a new inpatient hospital addition. They are all scheduled to be completed in the next 1-2 years, so the med school will definitely move out of the basement of the clinic building in a year or so.

But yes, Duke is gorgeous, Vandy is beautiful as well (similar environs).

But other than those two I think Yale, Penn, Emory, and UCSD are all really nice.

UBC says hi.

And our med building looks alright I guess.

JABSOM in Hawaii is right on the beach (although I'm not are if they can see the beach from inside the school). The buildings aren't bad either.

Penn is definitely nice, I think it also helps that all that land that the university covers follows same style, so it all just gives it a city-like feel.

Haha, Harvard looks like some Wall Street looking buildings stacked together.

The appearance somewhat reminds me off a resort or something, definitely has some South American or Spanish look to it.

Harvard is very nice, but is also in an extremely busy area.

University of Utah has a stunning view out of their buildings, I was really taken aback when interviewing there (5 days with free skiing yeah man!) especially after coming in from Ohio State's great plains just a few days prior.

Baylor anyone? Texas Medical Center is gorgeous.

Emory and Duke are both way up there.

Hopkins is okay I guess, but it's in a pretty rundown area of Charm City, which takes away from some of the charm. We're just talking about how pretty the school is, don't get starry-eyed just because you got an interview at the #1 med school.

As for ugliest, I'd say AECOM was a bit gloomy, especially the dorms. Wasn't too blown away by the rabbit warren once you're in the Case buildings either.

I didn't like the TMC when I was there. Felt like I was trapped in some forest of high-rises and hemmed in on all sides. That claustrophobic feeling definitely didn't agree with me. Functionally speaking, the TMC also rubbed me the wrong way. Whereas in major medical centers that are united in one entity, most of the building are connected in some way and easily accessible, I didn't get that impression in the TMC. It felt like each institution was still an island onto itself and the various sites in the TMC didn't seem to readily walkable or accessible. Baylor's buildings are nice on the inside but again, it's in the middle of the TMC which I consider to be a negative aesthetically speaking. Sorry to bash on TMC, but those are my impressions.

When I saw Touro's medical school in Harlem, my first thought was of the medical school of which Dr. Nick is an alumnus: "Hollywood Upstairs Medical School." I didn't know there was also a "Harlem Upstairs Medical School."

Of course, one shouldn't judge a book by its cover and all that, but still.
