For real, that Duke rejection was cold blooded.

Choosing emergency medicine as a specialty, lol

USF rejection: "Here are a list of things we look for: ....... Obviously you didn't have them. You're rejected."

Did they really give a list of things they were looking for? If so, I think that is the best rejection I have heard of yet.... There are one or two that I really expected to get an invite from and would love to legitimately know what kind of applicant they are looking for, if for nothing else just out of curiousity.

Dear Applicant:

Thank you sincerely for your interest in our program. We annually receive over
1000 applications for our ten EM-1 slots, and can only interview a limited
number of candidates. Obviously, there are many of you that are very well
qualified and deserving of a residency slot in our program, and I apologize
that we cannot offer you an interview at this time.

When looking at an application, we consider all aspects of the candidate's
record. If a candidate has deficiencies in one or more areas, then we look to
other areas to see if they have done something extraordinary to balance out
the deficiency. The items that we consider important are as follows:
Medical school attended
Medical school grades
Exposure and experience in Emergency Medicine
Past medical and other experiences
Maturity
Leadership qualities
Involvement in Emergency Medicine organizations
Commitment to the specialty
Standard Letters of Reference (SLORs) from Emergency Medicine programs
Other letters of reference
Board scores
Publications, presentations
Personality
Being well-rounded
Work ethic and dedication to self-improvement

The final decision to interview rests purely on the opinion of the interview
committee members regarding these criteria and a comparison with the other
applicants, and does by necessity remain somewhat subjective. I cannot provide
more specific feedback as to why a candidate was not accepted for an
interview, because doing so may compromise the confidentiality of letters of
reference or create other issues. The vast majority of candidates are
well-qualified, but are not invited only because of the numbers which we face.

Best wishes on a successful emergency medicine career.

Sincerely,
Kelly P. O'Keefe, M.D., FACEP
Program Director

Has anyone heard about rejections or waitlists for Georgetown, George Washington, or Arizona?

It makes me sad that the very first thing in their list is what medical school the applicant attends.

I got the USF rejection email yesterday too. Was kind of surprised. Also, when they laid out this laundry list of things, I was hoping to find out why they cut me. Nope. Only thing missing from their email was useful information. haha. Got Carolinas reject the day before. Suck it.

On the bright side, got an interview invite today from Univ of Chicago. Psyched about that. Older nontrad from TX, fyi.

It makes me sad that the very first thing in their list is what medical school the applicant attends.

It makes me sad they list "Maturity"

As that can objectively be measured at ANY way in this interview process (assuming 99% of the applicants haven't had a recent arrest)

So if we didn't get a rejection from CMC, Duke, USF or Georgetown does that mean more wait list "action"? Wonder if there will be any movement from those programs this late in the game.

i was also waiting on Georgetown. Have heard nothing from them.

When I interviewed there they said something about having a long list of people they wanted to interview but that this year was crazy. They were hoping to fit people in once cancellations started.

Baystate rejection. Lame-o. There go my Boston dreams.

It's rejection week for me... Advocate Christ, UCLA Olive View, and UCSD :(

Just got rejected by my hometown program where my entire family works. Raised there, family works at this hospital, and competey rejected. Hell I even worked there growing up. Fukin awesome.

Sorry buddy! Some of them sting. I'm assuming it was Stanford as I just got one from them.

This process blows. I understand PDs have to sort through 100s of applications, but man some of this just doesnt make sense. Rejected by places I thought were sure things, interviews at places i thought were a stretch. Seems pretty damn random.

+1 Stanford rejection.

Aren't you DO? Is that a surprise for Stanford? Not trying to start a bashing here, but I know the general consensus is that DO students have a major uphill battle at top end programs (for reasons that I personally do not understand or appreciate).

Surprised you kept the PD's name on that letter and put it on SDN. Some things just don't belong on here imo.

Nawww wasnt stanford. Trying to keep some semblance of anonymity.

Penn State rejection today. Really sad about this one. I'm sitting here wondering what they were looking for that I was missing. Anyone know if they look for something specific in applications besides the normal? I sent them an interest email, been told by multiple interviewers that I have a very competitive application, and I go to school in PA.

Georgetown on Christmas Eve. That was a huge lump of coal in my stocking. Fortunately, I've found THE program already. Georgetown would've been a hard sell.

Yeah, got that also. But as the prophet Eazy E once said, "Merry MuthaF----- Christmas to you too!" Thankful I am in a happy place also! Happy holidays all!

I don't see why it matters. It's my rejection to post

Congrats on finding THE place.

Also got Georgetown on Christmas Eve. Of course, that's about a month after they rejected me for the first time.

Anon asked me to post this...although at this point in the game I would think it's fairly obvious. :)

Anyone know much about Penn State? I looked at their website and their classes are about 50% IMG. I normally interpret that to mean that the residency program isn't very competitive. But, I keep hearing about solid, local applicants getting denied an interview. Anyone know what's up?

I just have to say how unbelievably RUDE I think it is that a couple programs haven't made any contact. Not a rejection, not a mention of being on a waitlist, not even an acknowledgment that I took the time and money to apply. One program I e-mailed out of sincere interest and I still didn't hear anything. I'm absolutely happy with the interviews I received, but that just doesn't seem very professional or polite to me.
