I interviewed at Sinai for both MD and the PORTAL program in October. There is an additional interview - during the middle of my interview session I was pulled aside for a 15 minute interview with Dr. Zier, the director of the PORTAL and PhD program.

One of the student tour guides I had also happened to be a part of the program, so he gave me some insight on how it works. During your first two years, You basically take one extra class per semester that focuses on the fundamentals of conducting clinical research. The bulk of the actual research comes in between your third and fourth years, where you take a gap year to work on your research project, but if you are especially proactive they will work with you to find a lab during summers. Competition is pretty stiff though, they only take something like five people per year. Good luck and hope this helps!

Thank you very much! very helpful information.

Just got an II! Didn't know they called people on the phone lol

3.67 cGPA, 35 MCAT. Honestly I was shocked seeing as I didn't finish their secondary until the end of october

I was wondering if anyone from those who were accepted on the 10th of December has received their admission letter package in the mail? I believe it has now been three weeks or more since the day we received the email. Thank you.

Received this today 😕 . I'm really bummed: 🙁

"Thank you for your continued interest in Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

As you already know, Sinai operates on a rolling admissions process. As such, we will be sending acceptance letters to applicants on a regular basis between now and early May. While we are not yet prepared to offer you an acceptance at this time, your application is still being considered by our committee. Please know that your application is important to us and that we appreciate your patience as we continue our review process.

As you weigh your options for next year, we encourage you to review Accelerating Science/Advancing Medicine which provides greater insight into the academic curriculum and the student experience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Please remain in touch with us should you have any questions or concerns, and do not hesitate in providing us with updates that we can include in your admissions file."

Has anyone been accepted so far after getting this message? Give me some hope! 😀

I got the same email too. Are we just deferred to the next committee meeting or are we placed on a waitlist that does not move until May 15th?

does anybody know if Mt. Sinai is receptive to Letters of Interest pre-interview??

it's definitely in top 3 for me.

For those of you who got the email this time....when did you all interview? I also received it and interviewed mid-December

I also interviewed in mid-December. I was surprised because last year decisions were sent around Jan 11th.

I got this letter a few weeks ago:

"Thank you for your continued interest in Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

So I am really confused. I am not sure if it is a "we haven't gotten to you yet" letter or a waitlist letter.

Couldn't help note that my letter was the same, minus...

"Our committee is extremely impressed with the quality of this year's applicant pool, including you."

I am going to assume this means I'm lower down the pole on this imaginary waitlist.

I really wouldn't look that far into this. I got the same email at around 5pm yesterday, and I interviewed December 21st.

They told us at that date that we wouldn't hear from them until FEBRUARY. So I'm just taking this with a grain of salt; I think it's an automated email that goes out to waitlisters and to those the committee hasn't reviewed yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if I got another copy of this email sometime soon.

Hi all, I was among the first batch of acceptances back in November, and the same email you guys are talking about was sent out to some people back then as well before any acceptances were sent out. Unfortunately, none of the people who received acceptances got this email...so I guess the intention of the email was just to say that they reviewed your applications but have chosen to put them back into the application pool to be revisited at a later date (aka kind of like a deferral). Hope this helps and good luck to everyone!

Can anyone comment on what the interview day is like? How many interviews are there and are they open or closed file?

hi all- for those who got the e-mail, i was able to speak with admissions recently and got some clarification. after our interview, there are three buckets our application can go to: acceptance, rejection or continued consideration. folks who got the e-mail are in this last bucket.

sinai does not start an official waitlist until march, so the point of continued consideration is so that people can be accepted out of this bucket before they are ever waitlisted.

hope this helps!

Thanks for calling to find out. I kind of figured that's what it meant, although i haven't seen any rejections go out yet. Pre- or Post-interview. I really want to send a letter of intent/update, but i have nothing to update them with and a letter of intent would just be my secondary "Why Sinai" question reworded

Congrats! Mind sharing your stats? I also submitted october and haven't heard back. Thanks!

interview via email right now. so surprised an excited! can't wait 🙂 I have been complete since late August

Hey guys. Looking for some honest insight. Does interviewing in late February pretty much mean I am interviewing for a waitlist spot?

It seems like they have already started accepting a good number of students and I am not expecting much anyway because MSSM has crazy high averages but I just wanted to get an idea of the best-case scenario.

All in all, this school seems amazing and I am so excited!

+! wondering the same thing. Also, can anyone post the email address that we would send any updates and letters to? I sent an email about a question I had a while back and never got a response :T

People were accepted last year with February interviews, if you check the thread. I believe a med student said that a lot of people who got in earlier end up being woo-ed other places by the end...so spots seem to open up?

Can someone please give me the link where I can accept my acceptance online? I am an international applicant, and it is going to take a while before I receive my admission packet because my country's Postal service is on a strike. I called the admission office but the link doesn't seem to work.
She said it was acceptedstudent.mssm.edu. Thank you.

I can't speak for the admission office but to be really honest, I think most of the class comes from the post-January bunch.

That said, you never know because it's different year to year. It is getting harder and harder to get in, that's for sure - the avg MCAT score is creeping up each year (we'll hit 36 soon), and there's fewer and fewer kids in the AMCAS pool because Sinai is going to expand the percentage of college-admits via special admission programs (to eventually 50% of the class - right now it's probably about 30%).

The best advice I can give you is to be genuine if you really like the school and show it on the interview day. I host a lot of applicants each year and some with stellar stats (40+) who interviewed really early in the season were also flat out rejected because I think they were treating Sinai as too much of a safety school and the adcoms know it. That said, there's also going to be a fair amount of movement I bet once the WLs get going later in May.

Thanks for the input guys. I know this sounds selfish but I hope the AMCAS pool isn't 50% this year. :scared:

what do you guys mean by AMCAS pool of applicants?

Is it safe to assume that if we have not heard back yet for an II that we are out of luck? Complete lat August.

What I took from it: Icahn/Sinai has at least one, maybe more, programs students can matriculate through into the school's MD program. The Humanities and Medicine program (Humed) is one of them.

So the school's class of ~140 isn't all from the AMCAS application system (which also includes MD/PhD students I believe?), although I am unsure how many came from the system itself.
