2012-2013 Panic Thread

Just wanted to say good luck fellow panic team!
I was fully planning to have to reapply and retake the MCAT again when I got the phone call today that I'd been accepted!

If I can get in with a 29 MCAT, you guys on here with crazy high MCAT scores can make it, too! Hang in there, there is a lot of this cycle left to be surprised, too!
 
Just got a snail mail PRE-SECONDARY rejection from Wayne State, one of the least competitive MD schools. OUCH.

They literally said straight up that my app wasn't competitive. OOS/3.52/31R (11/10/10)

So strange since I got an interview at VCU (where I'd MUCH rather attend, anyway), and VCU also has a strong in-state preference.

Thoughts? What are their screening cutoffs?

This makes me insanely worried about other schools.
(So far I'm at 5R, 1II)

I don't know what's up with Wayne State. They were the only school that decided to hold off on even sending me a secondary until they saw how I did on my second MCAT (my first score was a 29). Not even a secondary! I got the secondary after my 2nd score came back, but I didn't like that they didn't want me and withdrew a few weeks ago without even submitting my secondary. I think you should be fine for other schools, Wayne seems to be a pit picky.
 
5 rejections, 1 II at state school where I was waitlisted last year. This cycle is no better than last year so far....yikes. Congrats to everyone with II's/acceptances tho!

Wayne State is weird... I interviewed there and the interviewers pretty much gushed at me from the start, saying things like, "Your problem is not in getting accepted, but in deciding where to go," and, "We hope you come here!"

Then, when the time came, they waitlisted me. Huh?😕

Maybe they figured since you had so many schools to choose from you'd go somewhere else? lol

That must be incredibly frustrating.

I am making an assumption here, but it seems clear to me that they didn't do a good job making an argument for you when the committee was reviewing your application.

I know. I have like 650+ clinical hours, decent stats, great LORs, original ECs, a great PS, and secondaries (and one II) at much more competitive schools that pre-screen (actually got secondaries at ALL the other schools that pre-screen that I applied to), Kinda weird, huh? What do they even want anyway?

I hope that this isn't an indication of what's to come. I absolutely adore the school I just got the interview at (way more than Wayne State - no question), but I'm scared to put all my eggs in that one basket, because if that's my only interview I'll be a stress mess the entire time because that day will singlehandedly make or break my shot at med school this year.

Whatever, it's Wayne State's loss and VCU's win. VCU FTW!!

VCU is a really great school in many respects, and I think that you'll find the environment there both friendly and relaxed.

Never thought it was anything less. Like I said, I love VCU like 800000x better than Wayne State, and I would be the happiest person ever to go there. The more I hear about the environment and the curriculum, the more I realize what a great fit it is for me since I'm a very laid back and cooperative person.

In fact, out of all the schools I applied to, I feel that VCU and Brown would be the best fit for me, although I have a snowball's chance in hell of getting into Brown with my stats, so VCU it is! I swear, I still haven't come down from that post-II high... and it's been over a week!

You guys should really be checking the status pages on your applications, and not just waiting for an email.

I got an interview invite yesterday via status update, and I still haven't received anything in my email. For some schools the email could come as late as a few days after the status update.

in all seriousness, I just follow the school-specific threads, and check my status when other people in the threads say they have an update.

I'm not suggesting that you need to check every school's status page every single day. But maybe once every week or two just in case you don't get the email. If you go through some of the school-specific threads you will see that some people have gotten status updates and not gotten the corresponding emails in their inbox or spam folder.

Besides, since this is the panic thread, what else are you gonna do with all that time except panic? 😀

I'm driving myself crazy checking my email so often. I can't afford to get even loonier. :laugh:

Don't neglect to check the change in font size on your status page. Even if the messages haven't changed, a decrease in font size, or a change in the spacing of the blocks of text on you status page may indicate you have been rejected.

Hmmmm, I'm fairly sure this font has been decreased in size by 0.5... In fact this whole page's font has been decreased!

No worries man, you can get yourself un-rejected in merely 2 simply steps:

1) Hold down the Ctrl button on your keyboard.
2) Scroll upward with your mouse scroll wheel.

Congrats, your app is now back under consideration at the school of medicine! 😀

Finally some love from my hometown...or from any town really!

Enjoying being buoyed by good news but waiting for the inevitable panicking that will commence after a brief interlude of joy..
 
doc..101 what is your hometown? Just trying to get a feel of the processing. Still waiting for responses. Its so slow............ Should we expect anything in Nov or Dec?
 
Guys! Today and tomorrow are the only days left for us to get news! Thanksgiving break is coming.
 
Ugh that is bullcrap. How long is Thanksgiving break? Wednesday-Friday?

Que? Thanksgiving break around here is only on Thursday and Friday of next week. What about Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday? 🙁

Guys I heard most schools stop sending out interview invites after Thanks Giving. And the schools that still send out Interviews do so to fill their waitlists....

Actually, there is some merit to this hysteria. It's pretty common for faculty to take the week off for Thanksgiving. Source: I work at a medical school. Let the panic commence!
 
0 MD interviews. 1 DO interview. Complete at most schools throughout October and a couple towards end of Oct/early Nov. 2 MD rejections including my top choice state school, but still have 17 completed MD applications and 4 more DO apps out there. Worried though because I have a horrible GPA (3.2) but did a postbacc and did ok. 35 MCAT is my only hope in this. Just not too optimistic.
