New year, new thread. Post all your personal statement questions here. Threads made on their own related to personal statement questions will be merged into this thread.

Game on and good luck, folks!!! Get those creative (and honest!) juices flowing on paper!

Are those applying allo and osteo using the same personal statement? I know you get more characters with allo but I condensed mine for the osteo one and now dont know what else to add.

I believe you get less characters in allo? 4500 for AACOMAS 3700 for AAMC?

Is it ok to focus on one topic or train of thought for the PS? For example, I have been focusing on being deployed by the Red Cross as an EMT to Joplin, MO to assist the victims of the tornado.

The words were flowing yesterday (I wrote it like a story introduction), but not so much today. Looks like I am just going to start writing a new one (same topic).

I would suggest that if you are going to stay on one topic like that, try and tie it in to various things and how it has/will enable attributes that will help you succeed.

How long did it take you guys to write a personal statement you were satisfied with? I haven't even really started yet, but I want to submit my application by mid-June. Is it possible to write a good PS in ~3 weeks?

Yes. In all honesty I sat down one afternoon and wrote mine. Took a week or so to revise and what not.

I've been working on mine for about a week and a half and I think I'm about finished. I've made use of SDN readers though.

I've been working on mine for what seems like an eternity. I've gone through 10s of revisions with the help of two of my *invaluable* best friends, and I still feel like its nowhere near where it needs to be.

Questions about my Personal Statement:

You should spend about a month or two writing, editing, having peers proof-read, and re-writing your personal statement. It is included when you submit your primary application. What do you write about? How you do you make it stand out in a sea of excellent applicants?

Check out this gold mine:
The Depakote Guide to Writing a Personal Statement.

There should be a PS reader list out there in the forum somewhere if you want some SDN peers to give you their insight. Anyone who is an english major is a major plus. Also, make sure a LOT of different people give you their advice on it, and make changes as you see fit. You might be spending too many words on a topic that might not be that important, or you might not be writing positively enough about your experiences, etc.

is there an updated list of personal statement readers for the 2012-2013 cycle? I just performed a search but most of the lists seem outdated.

edit: nm, found it.

Here are some tips that I have been giving out to people sending my their personal statements:

PAINT EVERYTHING IN A POSITIVE LIGHT.

Think about what qualities an amazing doctor would possess, then touch on experiences of your own that show you possess those qualities. Don't outright say "I AM COMPASSIONATE" as that sounds pretty conceited, but use anecdotes or visual imagery ("..as I held the cancer patient's wrinkled hand"). You want the person reading your personal statement to think, "man, this person doesn't know it yet, but they're going to make a great doctor one day."

Try and tell a story.Start the essay off with a bang or with a good scenario. Get the reader involved instead of listing a string of positive qualities that sounds conceited and unproven.

With the stories/experiences you write down, make sure you are showing what you took away from them.

Don't use the word "fascinated". Everyone uses it. (I did, too, sadly.)

Learn how to transition between paragraphs and ideas.

Ask yourself; does this particular word and sentence strengthen my personal statement? Obviously, there's limited room and you want to make sure your story brings out the best in you.

Should I mention bad grades in the personal statement, or can I keep it strictly non-academic?

Should I mention bad grades in the personal statement, or can I keep it strictly non-academic?

I really wasn't prepared for college as a freshman and did really bad but I didn't acknowledge bad grades directly, I just addressed my situation and owned up to being underprepared, uninterested, etc but it was only a paragraph. I didn't think it was inperative to say "I got a D because..." There's a good PS stickey in the allo-fourms and the link above is legit too.

I thought the character limit for AMCAS was 4000 but now that I see the application it's 5300. My personal statement is 3520, I've edited it a lot and it's just under a page. Is that too short? should I lengthen it? it's pretty much done so I would have to do a lot of revisions.

Should you mention why D.O. in the personal statement? I was planning on using the same PS for MD and DO apps but was just reading through the Osteopathic Medical College Information Book and it reminds to "Don't forget to include the reasons that you want to study osteopathic medicine in your personal statement, and during your interview" under the FAQ Can I apply to both DO and MD?

Obviously I'll talk why DO during the interviews, but is it necessary to mention it in the PS? I've already had to shorten it for the DO app and I dont know if I can cut more out to mention why DO...

Any suggestions will help

GO CANES!!! It's all about the []__[]!!!

I'm having the same issue. My PS was exactly 5300 characters for AMCAAS. Shortening it is turning into a nightmare, that's two paragraphs!! I def don't have room to ADD DO stuff. I'll talk about it elsewhere, if necessary...

Anyone interested in reading my personal statement? I would love some feedback. Please PM if you could spare a few minutes to read and comment!

Yes. In all honesty I sat down one afternoon and wrote mine. Took a week or so to revise and what not.

Haha, I'll give you one better. I wrote mine in a couple days, spent another couple days reading over and revising it on my own, then spent another day having 2 other people revise it. It was done in a few days. 😉 I guess I just like writing about myself. I thought about it before I started writing though.

Good list. I'll add to it:

1. Please, please, PLEASE do not try to forcefully tell adcoms what you think they want to hear. Of course you gotta play the game, as in making everything a positive in your PS. But don't throw osteopathic medicine into the PS just because it's AACOMAS, unless it actually makes sense as part of what you're saying.

2. Like Dude said, make sure you spend more time describing what your experiences meant to you and spend less time discussing what your job was.

3. Avoid cheesy drama.

4. If a sentence doesn't add anything useful or different, don't add it. Repetition makes reading really boring for anyone, and less memorable too.

5. A common problem I see is people tend to make their introductions super long. It's nice to set the scene, but keep it short. You want to make the body of your PS (which contains all your experiences, skills, etc. you have to offer) the long part.

If I wanted to talk about a particular experience I had in a specific DO school, would that look bad to other schools?

Should we format it in the PS Box the same way it is formatted in Word/Open Office (e.g tabbing each new paragraph) or should we align it all to the left and just place an empty line between each paragraph?

I was wondering this too..If no one has an answer I think im just going to leave a space between each paragraph, no tab.

If anyone could read my PS and give advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm willing to review others as well, although I can't say I know everything to look for in a PS. I could help with grammar and sentence structure.

There's a reader list in this forum and in the pre-md forum. Lots of people volunteering to read!

Very vague... what was the experience, and how were you planning on wording it? You obviously don't want to refer to a specific school in your PS. But overall, I'd say avoid talking about your experience.

Put an empty line in between... like:

sdknkfjsiuernikjnsfkjndifuenkfjsndkjfnskjdnfuiensfkjdnfkjndskjnfkjsndf

No need to indent each paragraph.

I know i'm waiting for many to get back to me, but it's getting kinda close and I haven't received many revisions back 🙁

Ah, well good luck. It won't hurt to submit a few days later than the first 🙂

Through the rescue squad I got involved with the training committee and coordinated and set up two trainings, one with a nurse in mother/baby and one with sim dolls. They have a mannequin named Noelle so we did a birthing training there. It was such a cool training and super awesome to actually get to work with people in one of the schools I'm looking at! I definitely don't want to talk about just one school and make all the rest think that's the school I'm most interested in going to, though.

This whole personal statement thing would be sooooo much easier to do if I could figure out a good introduction! I have a billion things to say but the starting point is kind of what gets me lost.

That sounds like something good to add in... just don't mention the school.

Work on the intro towards the end. It helps to get some body paragraphs down, then link them to each other, then once you figure out something good for the intro work on it, then back to the body. I think I even did my conclusion before I did my intro.

Remember to keep your intro short, too. It'll help.

It's not that hard to write and review a PS guys come on.... to those that haven't started write out bullet points of how you'd like it to flow and what you'd like to include. once that is done it will be easier to write one down with great flow - share this with people you trust and value their opinion. should be done in a week no problem 🙂

Hi everybody,

When talking about a patient experience in the Personal Statement, can you use identifiers such as he/she? Can you also use quotes from the patient without giving them credit?

I'm pretty sure you can do both of these, but I'm just afraid of some HIPAA violation or something and then they throw the app in the trash.

Thanks guys!

I tried to avoid using "he/she" as much as possible... and if I had to, I just stuck with the masculine form since that's usually the default (the english language is sexist like that).

And yes, you can quote patients. Just say something like "One patient said 'blah blah blah'". You don't have to give the name. However, if you're giving a story about a patient, then it'll be good to use the patient's first name to show that you had some connection to the experience.

would it be ok to change the name of the patient for privacy purposes enforced by HIPAA?

Sure. But saying something like "I had this one experience with a patient who I will henceforth call Zeus for privacy purposes" is silly in a PS. Either avoid having to refer to the patient directly, or maybe just say "I had this experience with a patient who said something cool", and then refer to the patient as he or she like you mentioned doing before.

this is true. I talk extensively about a specific encounter I had with a patient due to which i couldn't avoid not mentioning the patient's name. Since, i also mentioned the hospital I had this encounter in, I decided to change patient's name in my PS for privacy purposes. I doubt anybody will ask if this is the patient's actual name or not. But In case somebody objects, I can just explain that i did it due to HIPAA.

Hi a quick question, for my ending, should I write about how watching and meeting physicians allowed me to understand the art of medicine or should I reflect on what being a patient is using my own experiences from the past? which is a better topic?

I like the patient POV better

I know the AMCAS character limit is 5300, but I'm getting mixed reviews about how long a good PS should be. Currently, I have 4422 characters and I feel like all of what I have to say is decent material, but I just can't help but wonder if I should put in more so i have closer to 5300. Input pls?

Thank you for the advice! I have been struggling to write my personal statement. I have done two drafts and three people have read it so far. Would anyone be willing to read my personal statement?

Hello! I need help with my personal statement. Can I send them to someone to get it proofread and get feedback? Thanks! 😳

Hi guys! I am applying to medical school in the fall and need the help of anyone willing to please edit my personal statement🙂! I can send it to whoever via email and please, do not hold back!!! Thanks!

I have my personal statement typed up and I'm looking for a few people to edit it!! Any help will be great 🙂 Any suggestions will help a ton!!

Thank you 👍

Is it possible to have multiple personal statements? I applied previously to one DO school, and they asked that I simply write about what I have done in the last 6 months instead of another regular personal statement. I'm planning on applying to more DO schools this time, and I obviously would like to send them full personal statements.

I can read some PS's if anyone would like. I think I can give good feedback, being a re-applicant myself and having had TONs of feedback on PS's over the years.

PM me if wanted

I'm here vouching for HalfListic. He's pretty good.
I'm still working on my essay and he gave solid suggestions, grammar stuff, etc

I'd be more than happy to read statements and provide feedback. I work in the writing help center at school if that makes anyone feel better.

I have been trying to write my PS for the past month and I have gotten no where! I have written a few essays here and there but my friends are telling me that it seems as if I am trying too hard... i don't know what to do...im freaking out! every time i sit down to write the essay i start thinking about how this is going to effect me...i want to write about the death of my family friend but I don't know if that is too negative and if i should consider writing something else
