I'm still waiting to hear from NJMS. I completed my application in early November (all was complete in September except LoRs). What is the best way to check the status of my application? Call admissions?

I think the best way to check would be to call admissions - that's what I did.

can anyone fill me in on housing first year? i got the housing application for 180 west market on campus housing at the accepted student luncheon. is this a popular choice for first years? it seems expensive but i guess the convenience and safety is huge in newark

75-80% of first years live in 180. It is a rip off but has some pluses.

Other popular choices include Society Hill, The Colonnades, Hoboken, JC, and then Bloomfield/Montclair etc. (the last 4 tend to be more of a 3rd and 4th year thing)

Interviewed on 12/20. They just emailed me on 1/22 notifying that I had been placed on the priority alternate list. Not really sure what my chances are.

Interviewed 11/14 and still haven't heard.. Is it taking this long for anyone else?

great thanks a lot for the info.

I have been complete since August and no word as of yet. Anyone in the same boat?

Possible reasons why they have kept me waiting?

I've been waiting since July. I am guessing I have been silently rejected

Whats the deadline to do reserve a spot in 180 by?

sorry didn't see this until now. i'm not in NJ i go to school in the South but my mom toured it and they told her if I wanted to have a chance at a spot to get in the application and money in ASAP. this was about a week and a half ago

Has anyone who interviewed in November not heard back? It's taking much longer than the 6-8 weeks that they told us!

Anyone else wondering what the story is with the 'admitted students' section on the NJMS web site? (Just excited to see info new info posted on it. Basically checking it every day...)

I wouldn't hold your breath - its not updated very often; and is generally pretty useless

I

I interviewed mid November and have heard nothing.. I called twice now for a status check and was told there was no decision made on my file.. I have a feeling they already accepted a lot of students so they are holding off on decisions until they know how many spots remain. just a feeling though.

I called them today and was told that the interview season is over and that final decisions will be going out in the next couple of weeks. Pretty soon the rejection will no longer be silent.

Has anyone received a decision lately/ has anyone been accepted that interviewed mid November or later?

Has anyone from 2011-2012 or 2012-2013 GSBS program gottten acceptance in NJMS this year? Just curious!

Got what appears to be preliminary financial aid information in the mail today. Just basically says how much money I am able to take out in direct loans to pay for cost of attendance next year. However I think tuition for next year isnt available yet, so Im not exactly sure what to think of this. Anyone else get this letter?

Also my parents got an invite to parents day in april. This might be a silly question but are accepted students invited to this?? The reply form online makes it seem like only parents are invited.

I think it's for parents only. At least that's what Dr. Heinrich said at the luncheon.

Yeah I got the financial aid letter too.

And pretty sure not accepted students at the parents day

So they only mentioned loans in your aid letter, nothing about scholarships/grants?

I think that letter is pre-submission of the financial-aid application and based on preliminary information, I haven't submitted the app yet and the letter says how much in loans I can expect to be eligible for.

I called the financial aid office and they told me that the loan amount in no way reflects this years tuition costs. They are just telling you how much you can take out in federal loans. More loans (such as grad-plus) will be needed for individuals looking to cover the entire COA. They also told me scholarship info is not available yet.

Also, for anyone also accepted to RWJ, the UMDNJ financial aid information needs to be filed under one of the two schools (you have to select one), but the financial aid department is shared between schools so it doesnt matter which one you file it under.

just saw a previous post asking about a priority alternate list this cycle.. idk how big it is, but there is one. (i'm on it). interviewed in November and just found out this week.

Anyone know how match day went today?

Very much interested in this as well!

Im actually curious to see how the first pass/fail class does in the match, although we will be in medical school already when it happens (I believe they are second years now).

Although it has been said a thousand times before... matching depends less on the school than it does the individuals in the class. The students' interests, geographical preference, site prestige preference, etc. are all variables. One class may hunker down a lot harder for the step 1 than the last. One class may have a lot more people apply to plastics than the last. It's a crapshoot and it is rarely an accurate representation of the institution itself. Just a word to the wise.

Yeah I definitely agree with you. Match lists give very little information. For example peds isnt very competitive to get into, but peds at CHOP or Boston Children's IS competitive. One could argue that if a person is competitive enough to get into CHOP for pediatrics, that same person could have matched into ortho or plastics if they had that inclination. Also, looking at a state school match list can be even more difficult, because what may be percieved as a poor match (not very prestigious programs), can just be a reflection of the applicants desires to stay close to home.

So yeah, match lists are useless. But they are fun to look at nonetheless

+1 I think I just want a good match for my njms pride

From what I remember, the highlights include:
6 neurosurg
1 rad onc
3 derm
1 cardiothoracic surgery/research position - from what I hear there are only 12 seats in the country for that
5 ortho
Handful into Uro (not sure the number)
1 going to CHOP for peds

Do you know how living in 180 compares to off-campus with respect to social life/participation in the community/etc?

Very nice! I heard about the guy that was applying to CTS, glad to hear that he got it!

6 NS 😱

The NS programs are great too. Case western, Cincinnati, Cornell, Methodist, Jefferson and Albany.

Depends on the effort you make.

All the 180 kids hang out a lot, and then the small contingent of JC and Hoboken people hang out a lot together. The JC/Hobo people don't tend to come to 180 to hang out but rather meet people when they are out and about.

The kids that live at home tend not to generally socialize, for a variety of reasons.

Where you study is also going to be a big determination in how much involvement you have and how well you know people - going to the library or one of the classrooms will always mean you see and interact with your classmates a lot more. If you go straight home and live off campus and study alone, and make 0 effort - then you will have 0 med school based social life.

We always do well for neurosurg cos the the NJMS program itself is really good.

We had 6 or so go into it last year as well.

There are only 204 seats in the country for neurosurg, so when we send 6 - thats 3% of neurosurgeons coming from NJMS. Doesn't sound huge but when you consider there are like 150 med schools (+ DO + IMG)... 3% is pretty damn impressive

What other programs does NJMS match really well into each year besides neurosurgery?

NJMS posts their match lists online pretty late compared to other schools (considering many schools post their lists publicly online on match day). Expect it to show up on the website in a few weeks...

Until then, match reports from 2007-2012 are on the NJMS website: http://njms.umdnj.edu/admissions/prospective/view_admissions.cfm

The school has a bulletin board outside of the Student Affairs office in which the students can manually write-in where they matched.

I compiled these voluntary responses to make an unofficial match list.

Total listed here = 140. Which means that ~30 are missing on this self-reported list.

Enjoy.

Some highlights:
- A lot matched into competitive surgical subspecialties as mentioned before
- Radiology was not popular this year (NJMS almost always has ~10 go into Radiology every year)
- Medicine, as always, dominates

For your interest, an e-mail sent out this morning form the Associate Dean of Student Affairs about the match this year:

The class had an initial match rate of 97.7%. By the end of the SOAP process this rose to 98.9%. This is particularly impressive when compared to the national match rate for allopathic seniors this year of 93.7%. Nationally the match rate went down which makes the results from the NJMS Class of 2013 all the more impressive.

The class matched into some very competitive specialties including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Neurological Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Urology and Vascular Surgery. We were also very pleased to see a notable increase in the number of students pursuing primary care specialties (39%).

The Class of 2013 also matched to some of the top institutions in the country including Beth Israel Deaconess, Brigham & Womens, CHOP, Columbia, Cornell, Einstein, Harvard Longwood, New York Eye and Ear, UCSF, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, and many others.

Letter of Regret today. Pre-interview. It was about time lol GL to all that are accepted/waitlisted.

Just chiming in about housing (though I want to know if rejection comes snail mail too!):

http://univcentre.com/

I found this place to be walking distance from the school, cheaper, and better when I was getting my Master's. If you're more minimalist, the housing size will do. If you need large, expansive space, 180 is better.
