2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied, but I don't think I ever saw them listed on the APPIC Directory. According to their brochure they have submitted an application to become an APPIC member, but are not current members. However, they are participating in the match through the AAPI Online. This explains why you were able to submit an application to them, but can't find them on the APPIC Directory.

Thank goodness. I emailed the director because it seemed odd. They were in there before but now they've dissapeared from the directory.

Now I get to sit and wait.

😳

FYI, for anyone who applied to Cambridge/Harvard Medical School-- I spoke this evening with a friend who is a current intern there, and she said that they were currently in the process of reviewing applications this week. (Which is crazy to me considering the deadline was an entire MONTH ago!!) Apparently, they received a lot more applications this year than they typically do--possibly because they did not require supplemental materials this year (as they have in the past). So it has taken them longer to go through applications. She didn't know for sure when notifications would go out, but I wouldn't expect to hear from them until sometime next week at the earliest. Wanted to pass the info along to anyone else who is waiting to hear from them.

Has anyone heard from:
West Haven VA Health Psych Track
Umass Worcester
MGH Behavioral Medicine
Washington DC VA
Yale SOM Behavioral Medicine

Acceptances, rejections, rolling admissions? Thanks!

I applied to MGH BMed and Yale BMed and haven't heard a peep!

hey everyone. i got a rejection from sjsu on monday and a rejection from didi hirsch today. i also got an interview from kaiser fresno today. congrats to everyone with interviews so far 🙂

I am also waiting for UMass. I have been told they do rolling admission (at least they did in the past) but I have not heard of anyone who has gotten an invite yet.

Ok, so I know that there is stress and anxiety involved, and many individual differences in responses depending on how things are rolling out for you...but is anyone finding this fun and exciting? Maybe it's becasue this is the most excitement I've had all year (lol), but I'm finding it nice to anticipate getting an email from the sites everyday.

The rejections sting a bit and the invites make me hug random people who don't know what's going on...I'm loving it!

Rejection email today. I keep posting the bad news.

I got a general email interview invite from the Veterans Affairs NY Harbor Health Care System- Manhattan Campus.

Also, got a phone invite from Columbia yesterday, so it sounds like they are still rolling in interviews.

Thanks for the Columbia update! I kind of assumed I didn't get an invite there since I saw people had been invited last week.. I thought I was a good match.. maybe there is still hope! Did you apply to the Adult or Child track? 😳

I've been lurking the past couple days, but have not ever posted, so hello everyone.

The University of Minnesota Medical School (Peds) listed their interview notification date as today so I was wondering if anyone has heard? It is unclear if they will be informing either way, or just interviews today?

Just received personalized e-mail interview invite from U of MN Med school! I was getting nervous as today is the notification date 🙂

I heard from MGH Behavioral Medicine earlier this week. I posted it on Tuesday. They are doing rolling invitations.

2 rejections - Boston Consortium and the Danielsen Institute

25% rejections, 75% to go.

I will be pissed at my (APA accredited) grad program for not preparing me adequately (apparently, based on not matching 2 years in a row) if I don't match this year. But I'll also be glad to know that I'm done with this profession and my dissertation. 😛

One thing I'm worried about is that I interviewed last year at a site that I applied to again this year... I'm thinking that I'll get an interview there again (they interview more than 50% of applicants), go through the stress and cost of the match and then be disappointed again. :boom:

I didn't match my first time around, and applied to a few of the same places, based on my opinions from the interviews I did do. I actually ended up matching to one of my first choices from the year before. In fact, I later heard through the grapevine that they were really pleased I'd applied again. So don't worry too much... and take care of yourself right now. I remember how much more dreadful it was the second time around.

Has anyone else heard from Beth Israel? I remember that someone mentioned getting an interview awhile ago but haven't seen anything else about interviews or rejections.

Received mass email invitation to OHSU. 🙂

Just received a personalized email invitation to Nationwide Children's Hospital: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Track--would be an awesome fit for me😀

Congrats! These are both great sites! I interviewed at both last year - feel free to PM if you have any questions about the interview day!

Has anyone heard from Alberta Children's Hospital? Notifications were supposed go out today, and so I was just wondering what time people had heard? I should probably scratch that one off the list but still a little bit of hope left! Thanks

Agreed! 😛

I think the first couple of notifications can sort of set the tone, though. For those lucky enough to have started out with one or two invites, it likely feels better than for those who started out with a couple of rejections, even if they end up with the same number of interviews in the end. Hang in there, everyone!

I know invitations have been reported from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, but has anyone heard news - good or bad - from the Oklahoma Health Consortium? Their APPIC entry states that they notify by December 1.

Rejection from U of Minnesota Medical School via personalized email.

it was quite a lovely and apologetic rejection and I figured it was a long shot anyway. lol

Nope and you applied to basically everywhere I did! lol

Columbia- Adult Track.

Good luck!!

Absolutely. It seems like she's emailing them out separately to each combo of tracks.

Yeah, thanks for the encouragement- but at this point it's really late...I think they forgot about me. Anyone else still waiting to hear from KKI?:meanie:

Hi Everybody,

I've been following this thread for a couple weeks now and haven't contributed simply because I have only heard from two places - one that closed down and one that rejected me (Greystone). I know it's been a stressful time for everyone, and I figured I'd put my two cents in at this point. If anybody is interested, Google "2011 Psychology Internship Message Board" and you'll find last year's thread. If you comb through the pages toward mid December (when many of the deadlines are) many people report having heard from multiple (4-6) internship sites per day during the last few days. I thought this was pretty encouraging, especially because people talked about many of the sites I applied to that I've been anxious to hear from. Don't know if this helps anyone, but if I hear anything I'll add it to the ongoing list.

I got a rejection from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in a generic mass email this evening 🙁 Just thought I'd add it to the list because I didn't see it on there. Hopeful for some interviews soon!

Good Luck everyone!!!

I received invites for University of Minnesota Medical School (Pediatric) and Oklahoma Health Consortium today - both personalized emails. Not sure if this is news or now - been trying to keep up with the thread but it's getting hectic. Good luck all!😀

Yep. E-mail invites were extended today.

Yup...I got a mass rejection earlier this week, maybe late last week even. So looks like you can be positive about this...

Good luck!

Got a phone invite from UC Berkeley CAPS this evening.

Just received a personalized interview invite via email from Northeast Florida State Hospital. Two interview dates listed: January 9th and January 23rd. Good luck everyone!

I interviewed there last year. One of the first things they did was have all of us applicants go into a room and they gave us 15 mins to read a vignette and write what we were considering for diagnoses, defend the diagnoses, and come up with a treatment plan. In my first interview, the psychologist felt I overpathologized in my vignette (and maybe I did because I stated I was considering diagnoses of borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder, but hey, that is what you see in a state hospital). She also whipped out a copy of the sample report I included in my application and asked me to defend my conclusions and diagnoses.

Definitely anxiety provoking. I'm sending positive thoughts your way so you will rock your interview! 😉

On Tues 11/29 one of my peers received an interview from University of Puget Sound.

I have no idea if it was phone/email/personal/etc...

I received an invite as well! I was also given only one date (Jan. 23rd) and asked to choose whether I wanted to interview in the morning or afternoon.

Interesting...I also received an invite at Children's Memorial today 😀 and was given one date (AM or PM), but my date was Jan 5th. :xf:

Received an interview at the Louisiana School Internship Consortium (LAS*PIC) in New Orleans via mass email this morning ("Dear possible future LAS*PIC Intern...").

Mass e-mail rejection from University of Pittsburgh Counseling Center :-(

Has anyone heard from Alberta Children's Hospital? Notifications were supposed go out today, and so I was just wondering what time people had heard? I should probably scratch that one off the list but still a little bit of hope left! Thanks

I got a rejection from Alberta Children's Hospital personalized yesterday at around 530pm central time. 🙁

Received mass invites from Milwaukee VA and UPenn (Pennsylvania Hospital) this morning. UPenn made it clear that they were looking at applicants in batches and doing rolling invitations up to Dec 15.

Hi,

I was curious about when you applied to Upenn...also did they provide a list of dates? Congrats on the interview!

Just got an interview invite from the adult neuro track at Henry Ford. Email was not personalized, but they do rolling invites, according to their website.

Two interviews so far, and both at sites I was rejected from last year 🙂

That's awesome! Congrats, I guess the second time around can be better. 😀

Hey Everyone: Has anyone who applied last year interviewed at Children's Clinics and Hospitals of Minnesota? If so, could you message me (if you feel comfortable with that)? I have a question.

Just got an email notification (not personalized) from Henry Ford neuro track for invite. 😀

I have not heard. :xf::scared:
dlite: no one I know has heard from them either. I was hoping they would make the calls for the np track today...guess we'll just have to wait and see 😉

Does anyone know, is there an average number of interviews that applicants can expect to get? Or does it just vary by person?

I recall seeing on an APPIC report from last year (or maybe the year before) that the average number of interviews completed by those who match is about 7; the average number by those who don't is around 4. I don't know the SDs for those distributions, but I'm trying to shoot for 7 - 9 based on this report. It can definitely vary, though, depending on the number of sites to which you apply, especially! Good luck! :luck:

The ~7 and ~4 numbers are actually the numbers of sites ranked by matched vs. unmatched applicants, respectively, I believe.

I would imagine these correlate fairly strongly with numbers of interviews, as most people won't be ranking sites from which they didn''t receive invitations, but I'm sure it does happen.

Number of interviews can vary widely, though, to be sure. This page shows the match rates for various numbers of interviews received last year, if that helps: http://www.appic.org/Match/MatchStatistics/ApplicantSurvey2011Part2.aspx (it's about half-way down).

Looks like there's a fairly sizable jump from 3-4 to 5-6 interviews, and again from 5-6 to 7-8 interviews. And if you happened to land 11 or more, you were almost guaranted to match (99%). I personally fell in the 7-8 clump.

Got an email back from their program director. They're still up and running. She said notifications would be coming soon.

I just got an email invitation (Dear Applicant) to interview at EVMS. Dates are Jan 9th, 17th, 23rd, and 30th.
