2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is the average number of interviews most applicants receive?

I dont think that's an appropriate statistic to use here, as not everyone applies to the same number of sites.

However, from what I remember, APPIC does have a chart that shows the percentage of people that matched by number of interviews. I think the plateau was 7 interviews or something, in previous years. That is, people with more than 7 interviews were no more likely to match than those with 7. And the likelihood hood of matching with just one or 2 interviews was pretty poor..statistically anyway.

In response to Erg923 and OvertheRainbow: Just to clarify, my university starts everyone at a department clinic to learn ESTs for anxiety/mood disorders. After that, you're on your own, and I decided to do 2 years on different rotations at an awesome VA because I knew I wanted a VA position for internship/postdoc (so "all" my practica is not exactly accurate). This was a good choice for me because of my goals, but if someone was not locked into a VA internship, I would not recommend it. This has been borne out in my results, as I have been offered an interview at the VAs in Boston, Baltimore, Seattle, American Lake, and Palo Alto (with zero VA rejections); I've also been rejected from every medical school/hospital I've applied to. Basically, I've opted to specialize in VA/military.

Ah, that makes sense and makes me feel better. Well, at least about the training of your site... doesn't make me feel better that I haven't gotten interviews at the two VAs I applied to... *nervous chuckle*

Actually, the chance of matching with 1 or 2 interviews was 52%, I think (lower 50s), in 2011 which are pretty good odds for most things. More interviews led to higher chances but, still, better than 50% for people with 1 or 2 interviews (I'd like to see the stats for just one...). The stats are available at the APPIC website.

Here are 2011 the stats directly from the APPIC survey:

Number of interview offers received:

1 to 2 interviews Match rate = 52% n = 385
3 to 4 interviews Match rate = 69% n = 516
5 to 6 interviews Match rate = 85% n = 538
7 to 8 interviews Match rate = 92% n = 433
9 to 10 interviews Match rate = 95% n = 355
11 or more interviews Match rate = 99% n = 417

As erg mentioned, after 7 to 8 interviews, things plateau a bit.

Just received a personalized email to Fulton State Hospital! Good to know I'm not the only one working on a Sunday night!

Also, for anyone that received an interview to FMC Lexington, did you get confirmation back/additional info from the TD regarding your interview date? How long is typical to wait before emailing again... a week? I'm sure the TD got my email, but the anxiety from this whole process just has me neurotic that my email is lost somewhere in cyber space...

Huh. guess i was wrong. my bad.

Hello. Does anyone know if there is a list somewhere of all the sites who had unfilled positions in Phase II of the match last year? I have been scouring the APPIC website, but I have not been successful in finding the information that I am looking for. I was able to locate the percentages of sites with unfilled positions, etc., but I would really like to see a list of names of the sites. I would really appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction (that is, if such a list exists!).

I'm still waiting on Woodhull - their APPIC website said we'd be informed by 12/9. Did anybody else hear from them? Perhaps they aren't sending out rejections :-\

When I googled two of the sites that I applied to in Phase II last year, there were only 4 results and none were a list of sites available in Phase II. So it's not discoverable on Google... I bet it's somewhere on the National Matching website, though.

PS - The list was here http://www.natmatch.com/psychint/unfilled/apcunlst.htm last year but it has been taken down.

Hello everyone,

Louis Stokes Cleveland DVA Medical Center
Captain James A Lovell Federal Healthcare Center

Still waiting to hear from those as well, Chitowned..

Same here, waiting on Cleveland. Does anyone know- for the VA sites that only have open houses rather than interviews, like Detroit and Cleveland, do they do any first round cuts and then offer open house or is the open house for everyone who applies? Thanks!!! Hope everyone is ready for a very crazy four days!!!

Hi Chitowned and other forum members. I apologize I accidentally got two sites confused. A colleague from my program did hear back from Wyoming State Hospital but it was by email, not snail mail. Again, I apologize and hope I didn't send too many people rushing out to their mailboxes on a chilly Sunday night 🙂

Generic email rejection from Andrus ... that makes 6 definite rejections, 1 probable rejection, and 5 to go... still no interviews...

Starting to come to terms with the idea that I might not match...

You did all of your practica at one site? We aren't even allowed to do that in my program. Now I wonder if anyone looks at my CV and thinks "how come she only did 8mos to a year at each of these?" Like maybe questioning whether I run away from sites or don't get along well enough to stay at a site etc... but two of my sites (one of them very prestigious) hired me for research or testing after I finished so that's definitely not the case, our program just pushes for multiple experiences... hmmm, now you got me thinking about ANOTHER reason maybe I'm not getting interviews... there really is no way to know what sites are looking for! I can't believe there are so many people with multiple VA interviews and no VA experience. We were always told there is no way a VA would interview applicants who have no VA experience! I got denied from two (even though I have a lot of assessment experience like others on this site are saying) even with experience this year (for the first time) with a military population. Again, I guess there is no way to know exactly what sites are basing their decisions on...

I have to agree that I dont think that doing all ones practica at one site is wise at all (and I'm not sure how that would be allowed), even if one is sure they want to be a VA psychologist in the future. I'm sure Huxwell had good reasons, but we prob dont want to encourage that kind of thing, even if its at a good place and has happened to serve him/her well.

Meh. I agree with erg that I wouldn't recommend working all of one's practica at one site, but sometimes an individual doesn't have a choice (especially if one's program doesn't place the person anywhere else and prevents one from going anywhere else). 🙄

As for the VA interviews, our program has absolutely no opportunities for VA, community mental health, or anything that could be considered remotely comparable experience. We typically still manage to match multiple students at VAs each year. 👍

G'luck to everyone this week! Hoping for crazy interviews to all you ladies & gents. :soexcited:  :highfive:

:luck:

Ah, thanks. I also tried Google and looked on the NatMatch website to no avail. I could have sworn I saw a list before, but maybe it was the one you referred to that has been taken down. Thanks for checking!

Bummer 👎 hang in there though... the three sites that I am still waiting on sent their emails today last year, and one of them I got an interview at last year :xf: fingers crossed I have the same luck with them this year... I think I will be a little devastated if I get an interview one year, spend a whole year improving my application, and then don't get offered an interview the next year... Good luck to you this week, and everyone else!!!

Finally the week of the 15th is here. Great news for everyone. Positive vibes, positive results to the forum

Let the last week of feeling like a caged ape in a frenzy begin.

Good luck to you all. 🙂

My colleague just got an interview at the Togus VA (Maine). He said it came in at about 815 this morning (CST).

Anyone have a rejection from Colorado State U CC or UVA? I think both were supposed to notify by the 9th, and I saw other people got interview invites last week but I haven't heard anything.

Annnddd just got a rejection from UVA student health via email.

Just got email invite to interview from Youth Opportunity Center 😛

Received a non-personalized interview invitation this morning -- the dates were January 9th, 12th, and 19th.

I received a rejection letter via snail mail from Astor and an email rejection from Andrus.

3 interviews. 6 rejections. Waiting on 9 more sites... :xf:

Just got a mass email rejection from CRH. I had applied to the Child track.

This is gonna be a rough week to get anything else accomplished... at work, but totally distracted. Hang in there everyone!!

I thought someone posted about the U of Louisville School of Med but I just got a personalized invitation to interview for the Child Clinical and Pediatric track.

Hope more good news is on the way! Hang in there everybody!

Woo hoo! Congrats Team Kakashi!!

Quiet over here... I wish the sites that are likely rejections given the details others have posted on interview offers weeks ago would just send them already! Then again, I wonder if sites are legit still reviewing applications these last few days... I clearly need to go find a distraction from these thoughts...😳

Very nice, personalized rejection from LSU (adult track)....still stings, though...

Guarantee not to get the position

👍 Blue is definitely the wrong answer. Not sure about green and white, but shouting "IRISH!" will work out really well 😀 :luck::luck::luck:
