2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay! Congratulations!

I've submitted 6, prepared 11 to submit, and have 4 cover letters left. I can't wait til they're all in so I'll have at least a month to do other stuff (dissertation, anyone?) and not think about internship!

Is it possible to stop thinking about internship even once apps are in, if so how?

I plan on submitting everything Friday, just a few supplementals to finish.

I plan on submitting everything Friday, just a few supplementals to finish.

I can do it but I've had practice. 😛

Last year, I submitted most apps only a couple days before their deadlines so I didn't get a chance to rest (at all!) before worrying about interviews. This year, I know I won't hear from sites about interviews for WEEKS. And, if I get any interviews at that time, I'll have at least a couple weeks to prepare for even the earliest interview dates (mid-December) offered by my sites.

I've also adopted a que sera sera attitude because I will not be reapplying next year, no matter how this year's cycle turns out.

Once your stuff is in, you'll probably be able to clear your head more easily.

You have a family business to go into?

Distraction.

I went to the driving range and/or played a twilight round of golf most every day after teaching/working/etc. I also tried to catch up on journal articles and books that I put offer during the application cycle. I also prepared two posters and did random things like try and better organize my presentations, references, and notes.

Oh I don't mean to imply that people are selected based on clothing choice, it's just another thing in my opinion that could help one stand out/be memorable, ideally in a positive way.

Blindchaos- I wasn't criticizing at all- I actually agree with you! My point was that it's sad that such things actually may matter, not that it's sad that you think they matter. Remember, you may be interviewing with someone who actually thinks they can tell something meaningful about you based on how you draw a tree! It's not unreasonable to think they might be making assumptions about you based on the way you dress. Not fair, but maybe true. If you can dress professionally but do so in a way that you stand out, that's great. If you can't, then just focus on dressing professionally.

Best of luck to you all.

Speaking of dressing professionally I was wondering if anyone has any advice on where to find a nice AFFORDABLE suit for a woman.

Nordstrom Rack and/or Filene's Basement can provide some great deals if you take the time to comb through their inventory and find something in your size. Female friends of mine have found some great deals on pieces of their wardrobe (blouse, shoes, etc). Outlets can be hit and miss too. Tahari was my friend's favorite, though I'm sure there are other designers who offer nice discounts on their clothes.

E-bay can be a goldmine for clothing if you know your size within a brand. There are many sellers that sell brand-new clothing (still tagged & bagged) for 50%-60%+ off of retail. This is also a great option for adding more options within a brand/style you already own, though I'm not sure I'd buy a suit this way.

My tastes are more Ferragamo than Famous Footwear, so YMMV for less expensive brands, though I do know that you can find good deals on individual pieces at the outlet stores for the higher-end stores. Saks Outlet definitely runs on the expensive side, but I found a Ted Baker suit there for like 70% off! Most designers these days recommend finding accent pieces to go with your staple clothing, as that will allow you to stretch your $'s farther. Buying a new shirt for an existing pant suit can really add to your wardrobe and not cost an arm and a leg.

Btw, I love the recommendation for wearing something other than a black business suit for women, or at least wear a blouse that sticks out. It is nice to see some flare amongst the overly conservative clothing most people choose. I wore a black suit w. purple pinstripes, a light brown suit with pastel shirts, and a Madmen-esque grey suit with skinny tie and vintage cuff links. I may not have been the best candidate at any site, but I was the best dressed! 😀

bodyc.com (body central), new york and & company when they have sales, the loft and anne taylor when they have sales, ross, etc.

I'm petite, so even with their petites, I generally get my mom (who is a former seamstress) to alter my clothes, like arm length and pants length.

Anyone know if you can have your DCT un-verify your hours in order to fix a problem. I haven't submitted any applications, but he had already verified my hours before I saw the problem.
...anyone have anything like this happen before?

TJ Maxx is my go-to, and Express and H&M are great too. Very affordable- so you won't feel bad when you never want to see it again after January.

Unless it's a gross misrepresentation of your experience, don't worry about it. Your DCT signed off on it, so it is the truth now.

APPIC has changed the unformatted preview; you can no longer view essays and cover letters until the very end. Here was their response to my concern (posted yesterday on this thread) :

"We have been working to get a better solution in place. If you go to the place where you enter the cover letters you will see a new button on the text box editor (where you cut and paste your text) that is labeled "paste from Word". When you cut the text from Word and then click on that icon it ill give you a box to paste the text into. This box will automatically clean out any of the word characters that are causing problems in the PDF.
Best,
Jason"

"Good Afternoon,
Thank you for contacting customer support. Please disregard the formatting
visible in the unformatted view of your application. As long as the section
appears without extra formatting characters in the section itself, it will be
sent to your programs as such. Once you have begun the submission process, you will be able to see a PDF of your application for any particular site on the screen before you select your payment option, which will give you a better idea of how this section will appear to your programs. If any changes need to be made before you submit your application, you will be able to go back and make those changes."

If your DCT has already verified, call the APPIC IT people and they can undo it. You can then change your error and re-submit it to your DCT to get re-approved.

Another follow-up/related question to my previous inquiry...how many LORs are people submitting if the site does not specify an exact number in their brochure?

In this case, would it be alright to submit 4 letters?

Personally, unless the site specifies the need to send extra letters, I'd generally go with the "default" of three. But that's just me.

Hi everyone,

I have a question on sending apps to different schools at different dates. All my cover letters are not finished yet for each school. Some are due Nov 1, some are due Nov 15. Do I pick all 16 schools and put in fake cover letters for the designations and then hit "next" or put in the 4 schools I'm all ready for, hit next as my designations and then add new schools when they are ready?

I don't want schools to receive bogus cover letters, but I also don't want to not designate all my schools.

"Once you submit you will not be able to change the body of the AAPI application, but you will be able to add CVs, Essay sets, Cover letters and supplemental materials for new designations."

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

In case anyone else has the same question:
Yup, you just designate the schools that you're ready to submit now along with all their supplemental materials, cover letters, and essays. Once you submit any of these specific materials to a site, you can't change them but you can submit them to other sites and/or upload new materials for other sites as needed. (i.e., the time for proofreading is OVER =P )

[You can't change the AAPI (e.g., hours, clients, experiences, dissertation info) after you submit.]

Then, when your other apps are ready to submit, you just designate those sites and their materials and go through the process again. The only thing that changes is that you don't have to check the 9 checkboxes after you've submitted to one site. =) All the apps that you've submitted show up in your Designations page in the small menu on the right of the "home" screen after you submit them.

The warning message you get when you try to submit is unnecessarily severe.

Good luck!

How is everyone seeing a PDF version of their cover letters?

I've got the option to edit mine or delete, but not view it in PDF form.

You go through the steps to submit (designate, specify materials, go to next screen, go through checkboxes, and then you get to a page where you can delete or preview each site specific application/designation) but don't enter payment information. The screen where you click to have a window for payment info pop up is where the preview option (blue button) comes up next to each site.

There is no preview option for me. There's a submit button after the checkboxes, which I don't want to do b/c I am nowhere done I just wanted to check to make sure my cover letter looks good booo why do they need to make this process so complicated? Why can you upload the CV but not the essays or cover letter?

The screen you want is the next screen after the submit button. The first submit page will not submit applications it will just take you to payment options. You cannot submit till you pay. It's confusing, but just click the button and the next page will allow you to see your pdf application.

I think it's to make sure people adhere to the word counts for the essays (or at least to make people think that they're monitoring that). Maybe to make sure everyone uses the same margins and font size... I could see that being a problem in the past.

The page where you can preview has the Pay By Money Order and Pay By Credit Card buttons at the bottom. Don't click either of those, just look at where your sites are listed on the top of that page and next to each site name are red (delete) and blue (preview) buttons.

man, I shoulda spread these cover letters out, they are starting to blend, especially considering half of them provide very similar training, just has different names for their rotations, tracks, clinics.

haha, I know what you mean, that happened to me last year. Depending on your deadlines, you could still spread some of them out.

I've submitted 19 so far and am waiting for faculty approval for #20 (which isn't due for a month). So yay! Done! ...Ish!

Good luck to everyone!:luck: You can do it!😀

Thanks, all the ones due in the next two weeks are done. I've got about 5 more CL's to do. It's like exercise. It's hard to get started, but once you get over the hump, it's easy to keep going. I can finish the rest in the next two days, and then just obsess over the wording for 3 weeks on those later deadlines, lol.

Hello everyone,

I submitted most of my internship applications tonight, with the exception of a few sites who asked for supplemental materials. The current APPI only allows for submission of up to 4 supplemental materials/documents per site. However, I have 5 or 6 supplementals per site for some sites. Has anyone encountered this issue? If so, how did you resolve it?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't run into that issue myself last year, but you may need to contact the site and see if you can just email the remaining materials to them.

Last year, I combined some PDFs together into one supplemental file. This is easy to do on a Mac with Preview, I'm not sure about on PCs.

Could they make the process any scarier for just trying to review the real formatting in your application? I am far from ready to submit but want to check that my essays and cover letter formatting are going to be okay, or figure out how I will need to change them - mostly I want to make sure the letters will be under 2 pages. However, I am terrified to go through all the fake process of pretending to submit just in case I get stuck. I know folks are saying you can go back as long as you don't pay, but is that 100% the case even before you submit one application? I just don't want to pull the trigger yet on anything. Sadly, I think I'm going to have to wait until at least one application is 100% ready to go and then hope I don't have oodles of formatting problems to address.

You don't have to wait... As long as you don't enter any payment information, you can feel quite safe. APPIC won't do anything for you without getting money for it 😛

Also, if you're REALLY worried about making a mistake and clicking like 12 times in different places and accidentally submitting it, you can designate a site you're not applying to, designate the cover letters and essays that you're curious about, and go through the process. Again, as long as you don't enter any payment info, you're all set.

We internship applicants are a super anxious bunch!

The group on here this year is super small compared to us last year too. Last year there were literally scores of regular posters who were applying. This year its seems like there are only like 5 or 6 of you...

Thanks, I did press the "submit" button for ONE of my designations (deleted all others), and found that I could preview the application and then go back and make changes to the content of my application (i.e. adult assessment instruments).

Whew! Wow, my cover letter looks really bad when copied and pasted. I'm going to have to tweak it now b/c they didn't copy and paste it correct (some looks like it is 1.5 spaced, other double spaced, and other single spaced). LAME

Okay, well that is reassuring - I *think* my application part is complete but if I see something crazy on the actual formatted app, I want to be able to change it. Maybe I'll risk it!

Regarding the copy and pasting

1) tabs didn't transfer. I had to manually go in and changed my tabs to 10 space s.

2) Do NOT double space in between paragraphs, it will be multiplied in your app. In Microsoft Word, just hit enter, 10 spaces to tab it, and that'll format your next paragraph

3) I couldn't get my info into the top right hand side of the letter to look good no matter how hard I tried, so I just deleted it (i.e. my Name, address)

4) but, that doesn't matter, because in the application, it has your name on the cover letter anyway at the top.

I did double space between paragraphs, using the shift+enter method (and adding a space on the blank lines) after pasting. I just thought it looked nicer. 🙂

cool, I'll try that and see if it looks good. My cover looks very nice right now, and I don't want to keep messing with it.

It could be that some people are still focused on their apps and the number will grow as time goes on. Idk. I've noticed that there is less posters this year as well. But hey as long as there are a few of us to support one another who cares how many.

True. I've been lurking on the thread for a few weeks and appreciating all the comments. I also had to do my generals (qualifying exams) last week, so I can almost guarantee that I'm farther behind on the internship app process than most of you. 🙂 (at least I have my LORs, DCT signoff, and transcripts taken care of) It's going to be a long weekend of cover letters. Thanks for all the tips, support, and advice!

Well welcome oceansize... I can't imagine having those exams along with applications. Assuming it went well for you!

So I finally ventured into the land of uploading cover letters today to see what everyone has been talking about here and on the listserv re: editting issues. I orginally had a very nice set-up for my cover letters, but it looks like the best thing to do is to use very plain text and formatting to get it uploaded and looking decent. Is that what others are doing?

I was hoping to get my first two apps uploaded this afternoon that are due Nov 1, but my last LOR I am waiting on ran into a glitch with her computer(now that was an awesome email to wake-up to 🙄... ). She thinks she'll have it uploaded by the end of the business day though.

I am going to likely be working on more cover letters for a good part of the weekend. I think I see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, for this phase anyway!! Hope everyone is hanging in there! Also, this might be a good time to go invest in some Ziacam... I thought I was getting sick this week and nipped it in the bud with that stuff! Stay healthy! Looking forward to reading more posts this weekend when I need a break. Like others have said, even if there aren't a ton of us, it feels nice to have a little community here where we can all vent our rantings and get support. 🙂

I'm eating oranges like crazy these days (1-2 at every meal), and had the flu shot several weeks ago. No symptoms yet!

Good call with the vitamin C! I am trying to remember to keep the basics as a priority- enough sleep, eating fruit and vegetables... and exercise that doesn't include tapping away at a keyboard!

I'm not sure if I read this here, on last year's thread, or I'm completely making this up..which at this stage, could happen. 🙂

After you submit your applications, do you receive any sort of confirmation from the sites? I know my AAPI shows the date that I submitted and paid, but of course that's not enough for us anxious overachievers!

Some sites do, some sites don't. But it won't happen til early-mid-November, at least. You should get an email from APPIC confirming the submission of applications to sites X, Y, and Z within minutes of submitting them.

Last year, the Boston Consortium sent out an email to all applicants (as did quite a few sites) thanking them for applying. I was so nervous about opening it til I realized it wasn't about interviews at all.😛

Just submitted my applications to my sites with 11/1 due dates. Admittedly, writing the cover letters and editing the essays and CV took a good portion of the day. Still, with all the freakouts that have been going on on the listserv, I was expecting the process to be a lot more traumatic.

Well, 2 down, 13 to go.

I've submitted 3 for the Nov. 1 deadlines and one with a Nov. 4 deadline. Two more to go this weekend due on Nov. 1. I'm actually grateful to get to the point where I care less about the wording of my cover letter and have a laissez-faire attitude about the apps as I'm sending them off. There's certainly something to be said for the "good enough" app. 🙂
