I just got an interview at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital- general child/adolescent track (mass email)

It's kind of ridiculous that two of my sites haven't notified yet and it's past their date. I've emailed them both and received no response. That sucks. Both sent out invites and rejections to people last week so I don't know what's up. I just want my stuff finalized so I can book flights! 😡

At my second interview, during two separate individual interviews the interviewers asked me where else I had applied and where else I was interviewing I answered vaguely like "oh, all over" but they kept on pressing. It was awkward and weird. I really liked the site. What would you have done?

At my second interview, during two separate individual interviews the interviewers asked me where else I had applied and where else I was interviewing I answered vaguely like "oh, all over" but they kept on pressing. It was awkward and weird. I really liked the site. What would you have done?

I've been told this is something to be expected - sites want to get a sense of how high in demand you are and what their competition is like. So, I don't think it's shady, just awkward.

I would have said, "I've applied to other (community mental health, medical hospitals, college counseling centers, etc) such as this place across the country."

If they kept pressing, I would have totally made some type of process comment such as, "I've noticed you keep asking me where else I've applied and it seems like you want me to give you a name. What's up with that?"

APPIC explicitly forbids applicants and sites from eliciting or providing specific ranking information. So you can't tell a site that they're you're top choice or vice-versa, no. I believe saying something like, "I am really interested in coming here" is ok, but I'd avoid getting much more specific than that.

This is an interesting question that I had not thought of. How do you go about answering this- what are the implications? Are they likely to think less of you if you don't have many other interviews?

Honestly, I was ok with them asking, so I just provided a few of the other sites where I'd already interviewed. In general, from what I personally saw and have heard from others who've gone through the process, you'll typically have a loose "cohort" with whom you'll go on the interview trail owing to people often applying to similar sites for similar reasons (e.g., reputation of the track, geographic location).

Applying to many neuropsych-related sites in the south, for example, I saw quite a few of the same people while interviewing at UF, MUSC, Emory, UAB, etc.

Thus, I could see interviewers asking you where you're applying to try and gauge if you've interviewed at/will be interviewing at the "typical interview trail" in the area. Much like with grad school interviewers asking this question, it can show a variety of information (for better or worse), such as if you're limiting yourself geographically, if you truly are interested in the specialty area/track you've applied to, etc.

I honestly don't know if interviewers would factor in number of interviews mentioned with their rating decision. It probably varies from person to person, although I never gave a definite number, and instead simply named a few of the places I'd been/was going.

I had an interviewer or two ask me where else I'd been/was interviewing, although it seemed more conversational in tone than interrogatory.

This is likely the case. This whole process can bring out the paranoia in everyone! Interviewers know that you are likely interviewing elsewhere, traveling around the country, etc. They may just be curious as to where you've been, if you've run into someone they know (remember, there is likely a "theme" to the sites you applied to, and the faculty at the sites are likely connected by only a few degrees of separation, if that). This is a good conversation starter. As far as being useful information for them in evaluating you, it may give them a sense of your interest in their population or the type of work they do (e.g. if they are a geriatric track, and all your other sites are peds, that might bring up some questions). Otherwise, it really is not very useful information in helping the site make its rankings of applicants. Despite rumors, conspiracy theories, etc., it is in everyone's best interest (sites and applicants) to simply compile their rank lists in order of their preference. There is no advantage to site in not ranking their first choice first, even if the site believes they are not that person's first choice.

Remember, sometimes a question is just a question. The interviewers are generally curious about you and your experiences and, other than in rare extreme circumstances (e.g. overly personal questions), you should feel comfortable answering truthfully and as straightforward as possible. When I was conducting internship interviews, I would frequently ask this question. Applicants always just answered. If they had seemed to be skirting the question about where else they interviewed, listed types of sites vs. specific sites, asked why I wanted to know, etc., I would have told them the truth- I was just curious if they ran into anyone who I knew (either personally/professionall or through there research), wanted to know what they've been up to with the process, and told them not too worry- there was nothing insidious about the question.

On a similar note, I had a faculty at one site (a VA) begin the interview by basically saying "I know you're not really interested in our site, so let's just have a general discussion." Other students from my program had a similar experience with different faculty. While the site wasn't very strong in terms of research production or "cutting edge" clinical services, it had other benefits that made it attractive to us (e.g. population of interest, location near one of the more popular cities in the northeast). Surprisingly, ten years later (last year), one of my practicum students was interviewing at that site, and had a similar experience.

Email invite yesterday. I'm still waiting on Temple, then I'll know all my sites.

I had my Boston Consortium interview yesterday, and for those who have interviews there coming up, I think you'll be pleased. They have the interview day down to a science. Everything was very organized and the faculty were very enthusiastic. The interns also seemed happy. Dr. Lancey is incredibly nice and I can't think of a better word to describe him than "jolly"! Dr. Shaw was also very nice and down-to-earth. Nobody asked "tricky" questions or tried to really stump me. They provided bagels/coffee for breakfast and a variety of sandwiches for lunch (including veggie sandwiches). There was water/soda available all day.

The only downside to this interview was that I got stuck in the elevator very first thing! The policeman at the hospital eventually let me out, and I was early enough that I was still early for the interview, thank goodness. Dr. Lancey joked that that's part of the stress-testing, but it was in fun.

There is probably not an answer to this but I'm going to try it anyways🙂
I know sites obviously cant give you ranking information, but is there any way to gauge a site's interest level through the interview (e.g. Was I in your top group or was I 100th on the list of those invited?) tone of the interview? Specific things said? Who you meet with?
Again, I know there is no exact answer and I'm just curious to hear other's thoughts. A site's view of me wouldn't affect my ratings, but it would be nice to avoid getting really excited about a site where I'm clearly towards the bottom and it would be a confidence booster to know when sites are more highly interested.

Yeah I'm the one that posted that. I got the interview invite on 12/15. Another friend of mine in my school also got an invite. The interview dates are Jan. 5,6,9 and 10. I sent them my preferred date right away but no response. They did say they had 170 applications this year. So maybe its a rolling invite. Good luck!

Philadelphia VA sent general mass invites on Dec. 12th wanting to know by Dec 14th which interview dates applicants wanted. December 19-20th or January 4-6th.

There is probably not an answer to this but I'm going to try it anyways🙂
I know sites obviously cant give you ranking information, but is there any way to gauge a site's interest level through the interview (e.g. Was I in your top group or was I 100th on the list of those invited?) tone of the interview? Specific things said? Who you meet with?
Again, I know there is no exact answer and I'm just curious to hear other's thoughts. A site's view of me wouldn't affect my ratings, but it would be nice to avoid getting really excited about a site where I'm clearly towards the bottom and it would be a confidence booster to know when sites are more highly interested.

Well, this is obviously just anecdotal but I had a pretty terrible experience on an interview last year that made it clear that I wasn't high on their list. Two of the people I was supposed to interview with did not show up, and the one person I met with was 15 minutes late. Also, the person I met with was clearly unprepared for the interview. Thankfully, I had another interview in the same city so it wasn't a completely wasted trip.

On the flip side, I know a woman who was told point blank by a site that they were going to rank her #1 and, well... they didn't. And she didn't rank anyone else so she was pretty screwed in the end. I know there are rules against that happening, but it doesn't necessarily mean those things don't happen.

Anyway, I think those are pretty extreme examples and hopefully won't happen to anyone. I don't know that it's worth putting too much energy into trying to decode what certain behaviors or things said might mean about where you fall in their ranking, though I definitely understand the temptation to do so. I worked in college athletics in undergrad and the interview process reminded me some of the recruitment trips we'd have athletes come on. I think it's worth remembering that both sites and applicants are trying to sell themselves.
