2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
sorry, should have been clearer. the UCSF CAS i posted about mean UCSF Child and Adolescent Services. just thought it might help people (at least next year) to know interview offers are still possible LONG after the site's original call. i may have been on the b-list, but i'll take it! 🙂 and THANK YOU, again, to people keeping up the site list. it's been unbelievably helpful.

Fixed! Thanks!

Got a personal e-mail invite to interview with the Dept. of Psychiatry today. Had gotten a phone invite to interview with the Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic on 12/13 so figured that was the only track I was being considered for. Just wanted to let everyone know that if they applied to both tracks there is still hope and they are still extending invites! 🙂

Also...has anyone heard from MercyFirst? They are the only site I have not heard from at this point...

For those interviewing at Alexian Bros, has anyone had their preferred interview date confirmed yet?

Did anyone else get the generic "clarification" email today? Letting you know that they're sorry for the confusion before but that they're NOT cutting you and WILL be ranking you in APPIC? It's rather odd.

Dear Woodhulls,

I want my money back.... I paid you $20 to reject my application. I have not received a notice, I can conclude that you STOLE my money......

Be Well,

Dear Columbia Adult Track,

I need some funds from your endowments.

The fact that you have a second round of interviews and you neglect to inform people who went to first round what the F is up with that, has caused me severe anxiety and also, some friends have been pretty much a wrack about it to, adding to my own emotional distress.

I would like for you to fund my upcoming years of psychotherapy. In fact, since you have a psychoanalytical institute, I want you to fund my analysis.

Thank you,

On the verge poor grad-student.

Agreed and don't settle on that 10 session CBT thought record stuff. Get them to pay for the good stuff......... that analytical 3x's weekly for 3 years...

Hi everyone! Just curious if anyone else has run into a scheduling conflict with a site and how you handled it? I was invited to interview at a site but was unable to attend the day that was offered to me due to another interview. When I asked about making alternate arrangements to visit, the training director started off very nice-nice and expressed "flexibility" and willingness to work out another option. A second date was offered (not one of their official interview days but an alternate date just for me), which I also could not attend due to another interview. I responded with several other days that would fit with my schedule and was told that none of them would work. I requested a phone interview and was told that they don't do phone interviews. Ahhhhh!

At that point, there's only so much you can do. It sounds like your only two options might be:

1) Since the new site can't reschedule anything else and won't do phone interviews, try to get the original site to reschedule and/or offer a phone interview

2) Pass on the interview/cancel the original interview and attend one of the two dates offered by the new site

I'd say you could ask about #1 (i.e., rescheduling) regardless. After that, the remaining options depend on which site you like better.

Has anyone interviewed here or know someone that has? If so, can you PM me?

THanks and good luck to everyone!

i have a question for everyone...how do you answer when they ask you what you think your weaknesses are? i never know what to answer for that question!!!

I would start with professional ones such as skill deficit in certain area or work with certain population. If it appears they are asking for more personal ones, just be honest, but be clear that you are willing to work on improving it.

For example, I do not like disorganzation and very much prefer routine. This is not a very conducive to working in a primary care walk-in clinic...which is one of my current internship rotations.

I had a random thought--

As I gear up for my January interviews, I am debating on wearing my wedding ring in interviews. I had one interview in December, and I did not wear it. I applied last year, and I wore my rings in interviews then. Any thoughts? Would it make a difference either way?

Do not wear it! Psychologists are not allowed to be normal human beings/members of society.

I know you guys are anxious, but good lord people...

Hi all
I was wondering if any of you got an interview offer from Trinitas Hospital, NJ. I received an interview offer and wrote back to confirm the date they offered, but did not receive any verification.

It has been 2 weeks now with no reply. I had emailed and called the TD a couple of times but there is no response.

Is this normal? Do TD take more than 2 weeks to confirm a date. I am beginning to feel anxious about it.

Any suggestions regarding what to do?

I have a couple interviews at non-accredited sites, and was wondering what people thought about asking the sites if previous interns have struggled getting their required hours/obtaining a post-doc. Does anyone have any advice about asking this question without turning the site off? Thanks!

You could definitely ask, yes. It's possible that it might turn the site off, sure, but if a postdoc is something you're hoping to secure in the future, I'd say it's in your best interests to ask anyway. I know that many of the postdocs that I'm applying to require APA-accredited internships, although I believe some sites may have a little leeway in this and related areas.

You should definitely ask this questions so you know the story and sites should be comfortable answering the question. Sites that cannot afford accreditation know that APA sites are preferred and will assume that you are thinking about this question. They may actually like telling you about the range of sites their students go to for post-doc as it gives them a chance to undermine some of the mythology of doom.

Definitely ask. It's a completely legitimate concern; the sites know that too, so I have a hard time seeing how they could be offended by the question. I would just ask it straightforwardly, e.g., I'm aware there are some challenges for interns who are coming from programs that aren;t APA accredited. Have your students encountered challenges when they were applying for post-docs and jobs?

Hi there
I also got an invite to Trinitas on the 13th. I wanted to ask you if you were able to get a confirmation for your date. I emailed to confirm the date they offered but did not receive any verification. I emailed to training director couple of times but no response. Do you know if there is any administrator that I can call to verify my dates? Or an email/phone number would be great. I am panicking right now as I can't get through to anyone at Trinitas. Good luck with the interview by the way.

Has anyone heard from either of these sites? Will County's deadline was the 15th and I haven't heard anything.

Thanks

I have 13 interviews, 3 of which have 2 tracks that I am interviewing for...so that makes it 16. Can anyone advise on how this improves my chances of matching, if at all? Can a site rank me more than once? (i.e. #1 on a track, #2 on a different track)? Any advice would be great, thanks!

May I please ask why wearing a ring is not appropriate?
What if someone is married but goes to the interview without a ring and then begins wearing it after being successfully matched? How authentic would that be?

I think we need a sarcasm emoticon. I think I layed in on pretty thick though, so I'm not taking the blame on this one. 😀

I am so sorry it wasn't meant to blame you! I am so anxious about the interviews that I am reading everything so seriously. I need to relax 🙂

I am not sure about sites ranking you on more than one track (i'm sure it's possible, but I didn't interview anywhere for more than one track)...also, congrats on all those interviews. I'm not an expert, but I would say having that many interviews greatly improves your chances. It only takes one, after all 🙂 Hopefully you have some time in between so you don't run yourself down too much, and can get enough sleep to be at your best for all of them. Good luck!

If a site has multiple tracks, each operates as essentially a separate internship site. So yes, you could be ranked highly by more than one track within a site. As far as I know, having separate tracks means that they have to abide by APPIC rules and cannot communicate with each other regarding ranking decisions.

Hi!

Hope everyone had a restful holiday/vacation!

Has anyone heard from Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center? Their deadline is 12/30. I thought I would hear by now....Thanks!

does anybody want to post questions they were asked during interviews? maybe it can help us all prepare...

I went through the internship process a few years ago, and noticed that the questions they tell you to prepare for never really happened. What I usually got was some variation of it. For example, "Tell me about a case" was instead "Tell me about a case where you made a mistake and explain what you did to fix it."

I recommend not memorizing a line but just having talking points. They bring you there to interview you to see what you are like and if they would like to work with you. If you get to an interview, everyone is already similarly qualified, so they are seeing how you are interpersonally in addition to making sure you answer questions competently.

Good luck...

Received an email invitation for a phone interview with the Walla Walla/Spokane VAMCs on 12/28. They are conducting phone interviews on Jan 11th, 18th, and 20th.

That puts me at 14 interviews, 10 rejections, and finally done hearing back from everyone. Thank God I only have to fly to 4 places, 3 are local, and the rest are over the phone.

Happy New Year's to everyone! Do we have any New Year's resolutions??

Mine might be not to engage in so much retail therapy, especially after this process 😛

Sorry for another outfit question, but I'm clueless. What do I wear to an open house the day before the interview. Suit? I only have one, so I hope not.

I agree with the point that the interview is to see what you are like and if they want to work with you, so while it is important to be prepared with information about the site and readiness to discuss a case, it is better not to obsess about specific questions and a rehearsed answer. I've seen students so prepared for a question they planned on that they don't answer the question asked. Interviewers know you will be anxious, so work on being as relaxed as you can and authentic about who you are and what you know (and don't know). It is okay to take a moment to listen and think. It is also a good idea to convey that you have a sense of humor.

Question. Anyone interview at both college counseling centers AND VA/Military hospitals? If so, can you speak to any differences you noticed between interviewing at the two different types of sites? I have interviewed at college counseling sites already and have a couple VA hospitals coming up and in preparing, am wondering if there are specific differences I should be aware of. Thanks.

I thought the VA interviews were more similar than different, as many asked typical VA questions:

1. Why the VA/this VA?
2. What are you hoping to learn during your internship year?
3. Strengths/Weaknesses.
4. What EBTs have you been exposed to or been trained to conduct? (EBTs are big in the VA system. They don't assume you to be trained in them, but it is important to show a willingness to learn/use them).

Hi Everyone,

So it's 2am on New Year's and I'm obsessing about this process. I have my first interview coming up in a few days and it is a phone interview. I have never done one of these, let alone been interviewed for something so important.

Can anyone please offer some tips for phone interviewing?

thanks :xf:

Yes, can anyone offer any tips?
Is there anything that we should really keep in mind, or not say? Ahh!

Some tips offered by my program's Associate DCT who ran some workshops with us:

Wear your suit- you want to feel as professional as possible
Take your time answering questions-but be sure to say that you are thinking about the question so that the committee/interviewer isn't left hanging (e.g., "That's a great question. Let me think about that for a moment")
Have your info & questions about the site in front of you for quick referral - that's one plus to telephone interviewing
Acknowledge each of the interviewers (if group) by name upon introduction and write their names down for reference during the interview
Relax, SMILE- even if they can't see you, it comes across in your voice
Be sure to ask lots of questions about the site/training experience

Remember, there are going to be some awkward silences because you lack the physical cues commonly used in conversation. The interviewer and committee should be aware of this also, so don't let that make you more anxious.

I'm sure there are other suggestions that other applicants or current interns can make. . .

So this week and next week I have most of my interviews (7 interviews and 1 open house) and low and behold I am getting a cold. I can't believe that I have been able to stay healthy so far, but now that I have to actually interact with people I feel like crap. It physically hurts to talk right now. Sigh. . . time for me to go od on some more vitamins. :bang:
