2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone interviewing at South Shore Mental Health on the 17th? I haven't received a schedule or any information. If someone could PM me the address and time we need to be there, that would be great. Thanks!

Hi all! I've not had time to check any SDN threads in a couple of weeks as I've been on the road/in airports/in interviews almost daily for a week and a half. I feel very fortunate to be in that place, but boy am I glad for a relaxed weekend at home.

First, I just wanted to comment on the inquiry about interview questions. There are lots of great questions being shared and I have gotten most of them as well. One that I have not seen here is "Imagine we're at the end of your internship year. How would you like to be different PERSONALLY." Not asking about my clinical/professional skills, but about me as a human being. First of all, that question gave me pause because let's face it, who has time to think about personal development right now?? Second, it said a lot about the site/interviewer because he wouldn't have asked if they didn't care about the personal development of interns. It was a great question. I answered by talking about continuing to develop my ability for life balance, self-care, and developing or reconnecting with interests that are outside of psychology.

Second, I wanted to ask how you are all deciding about ranking your sites. I have been taking copious notes during interview days, and I have a spreadsheet listing different items which are important to me (e.g., experience with adolescents, area I would want to live, etc.). I am rating a site on each of those areas (likert-scale of course! 😛) and am adding up a total score. I will use this somewhat to guide my rankings but there is always that "gut factor" of what feels right for me. That's where it starts to get tricky.

What other ways are you using? Most of my sites are awesome or I wouldn't have applied at all. It's getting difficult to narrow them into the top and bottom slots!

I am doing the same thing for my rankings- spreadsheet with ratings for each area of importance to me. I think when I add them up and see what the rankings look like based on that, I will then use my gut intuition to alter them, if need be. I always put a lot of weight on my intuition but sometimes, we need to see the data 🙂..

I hadn't considered that method before!🙂 But honestly, I kind of formed my rank list as I interviewed at sites based on my feelings related to my fit with the staff, interest in the population/training opportunities, and geographic location. I just had 5 interviews though, so I guess that made it a little easier for me to decide.

Another question for everyone. Anyone considering NOT ranking a site. There is one site that I feel I just would not be happy at, and have been debating on either ranking last or leaving out completely. As much as I would love to match in Phase I, I think I would rather take my chances in Phase II than rank at a site that didn't feel like a good fit for me. Anyone ele in the same boat?

Not an uncommon situation at all. I had a site last year that I debated not ranking, although I ended up putting them on my list because of the opposite feeling as yours--I'd rather have gone there than gone to phase II.

That being said, my advice would be that if you have a solid 7-8 sites to rank already, and you really wouldn't want to end up at the site in question, don't rank them. If you're sitting at less than perhaps 5 or 6 places to rank, I personally would strongly consider ranking them unless the fit was spectacularly bad. Then again, I REALLY wanted to match last year when I went through the process, so going at it again this year was not an option. Luckily, it ended up not being an issue.

I am back from some traveling this week and definitely have ranking on my mind... I thought it would be a lot more clear for me than it is. I have a definite number one that would be absolutely amazing to match at. I then have a couple more that would also be great and set me up for getting some training in an area that I am now thinking would be a great fit for post-doc. I am also very clear on my bottom 2 sites. I am confused about some because I didn't necessarily find the staff warm or welcoming. Some sites I left totally confused about the lack of feedback or warmth, while others felt so comfortable. I am ranking all of my sites because I don't want to go through this process again. I just don't think I can do that to myself, my partner, and my family.

Does anyone have the data handy on how many people got their first choice, second choice, etc last year? I thought it was something like 40% of people end up at their top ranked site? This would be from last year's applicant survey data that came out in the spring sometime I believe. If I remember correctly the vast majority of people who match end up with one of their top 3 choices.

I'd look into the objective stats of the program and contact current or past interns, if possible. Maybe the sites was having an off day when you visited. If it's not possible to do that and you really didn't get a good vibe from the place, look at what you've said. You would rather take your chances in Phase II than rank at a site that didn't feel like a good fit. Pretty clear answer there! 🙂 With 5 interviews in Phase I, you'd probably do well in Phase II, too.

Also, consider the impact that your ranking a site you didn't really like would have on other people. That site that you're not so sure about is probably someone's number 1. What might be an okay year for you could be an amazing year and the start to a new career for them. Good luck!

This should be easily found on www.appic.org in the match stats section.

Columbia is the only program that I know of that does a second interview. Did you have to do a first interview in person, and then they decide who they'll invite back for the next round?

I didn't apply there, I'm just curious about how it works!

Yep. I came to a first interview and then they invited me to a second. I actually didn't like them so much and I don't like that style. Plus the first interview was not fun at all. But I am reserving the right to be pleasantly surprised on the second round. Besides, if I match with Columbia, I'll say thank you and shut my big mouth...

I got called by a different person, and they set me up with multiple interviews for the same day. Sounds exhausting.

It really does! I have 3 interviews one after the other... And it's my last interview so I am completely exhausted. The scheduling call took about 10 minutes because of all the directions and details the person who called needed to give me... Bahhh.

I just did my interview at southshore this week and there was no itinerary that was sent to me prior to interview. They will post the schedule for you that day. A forewarning, they have individual interviews as well as group interviews... I hate group interviews in general. Good luck on your interview 🙂

Thanks for all the feedback! It's just so scary to think about not ranking a site with the imbalance situation, but at the same time not every site is a fit for all of us...

Last year, they posted a schedule for the day (who you'd be interview with and when) when you got there but they sent out the address and time to be there in advance (last year was 859 Willard Street, Quincy, MA, I think, at their office and 9AM. It went til about 1:15 last year, if I remember correctly, though they said to expect to stay til 2). Maybe that's the info the poster was looking for?

Alright, over half way done with interviews... five more to go. I wish I were done... soooo tired of traveling but it's a great problem to have. Ranking is on my mind as well. Knowing that of those who match in Phase I, 82% get one of their top three choices makes those slots on our lists very dear indeed. I've tried using spread sheets to do data based decision making, but however they come out, my gut feelings shift them around regardless of their statistical weight. That would be fine, but the problem is I change my mind every 10 minutes about all but the first slot. Sigh. Come on February 24th... I can't deal with being this insane for much longer!

I've gotten similar questions as others have posted here, and also...
1) Tell me about your childhood.
2) What kind of people are hard to work with?
3) Quickly, in the last minute we have please tell me something about you that will make you memorable compared to all of the other people I have to interview.

Hi all,

I finished up my three interviews and am torn about how I should rank them. I was just curious if anyone successfully matched during phase 2 last year and could speak a little about that process and what it was like. Do you still have to interview on site during phase 2 or are you more likely to phone/skype interview? Also, did anyone/does anyone know someone who had interviews during phase 1 but decided to withdraw in phase 1 but successfully matched during phase 2. I'm just in a weird place, and didn't really leave any of my interviews feeling like they would be an awesome match for my goals etc. but I also don't want to not match....Any input about phase 2 would be helpful. Thanks and Good Luck everyone!

Yeah you're right. Its the same procedure. Sorry I assumed they already know this info since it was sent out with the interview invite. Thanks for the clarification!

Some in my program went through Phase II last year. They did phone interviews mostly, but a couple went to the site. None of them withdrew from Phase I.

Curious about what sites went into Phase II last year. Anyone know how to get this information?

I remember reading somewhere in the Phase II rules that this information is only available for a period of time during Phased II and is then removed from the APPIC website. Perhaps someone from last year saved it?

I think that APPIC is doing this to protect sites who may not want students to know that they had open positions and possibly get the impression that they tend to be ranked lower by applicants.

Is there anyone out there who has interviewed or is interviewing at the Bedford VA? I am supposed to have an interview there tomorrow, but due to a technical problem I do not have the information regarding where at the facility the interview is to take place. Since it's a holiday today, I have no way to get this info (despite the fact that I'm finally, actually in Massachusetts). If anyone out there has this information, you would be my personal savior of the day if you could share it with me.

Please and Thank You. :xf:🙂

Well, I didn't match in Phase II last year (and to the person who asked, the sites from Phase II last year aren't available anymore, as someone already stated) but if you had 3 interviews in Phase I, I'd assume that you applied to places that you thought would be a good fit for you for some reason. In Phase I, you had all sites available and you chose the ones that you did. So the 3 sites where you interviewed are likely to be better "fits" for you than the vast majority of sites available in Phase II. If some of the sites where you applied but didn't get an interview are still available in Phase II (which is unlikely because most sites fill their slots in Phase I), they still might choose not to interview you. This happened to me with 1 of the 3 sites that I applied to in Phase II last year. I'd applied and not been interviewed in Phase I and I applied and wasn't interviewed in Phase II. The sites, it seems, don't lower their standards for Phase II because they know that the numbers are in their favor.

Regarding Phase II interviews, I applied to places near me and interviewed in person at both of my Phase II interviews. However, both sites said that they were doing phone interviews primarily in Phase II but since I was local (<2 hours away), they asked me to come in. I think phone interviews are a lot more common in Phase II because sites weren't expecting to be in Phase II and probably don't have time to set up day long interviews like they did for Phase I.

If I were you, I'd rank the 3 sites where you interviewed - unless you really don't think you could handle them for a year - and maybe even rank sites that you applied to but didn't interview at (if you like them, it can't hurt your chances in the matching process). Out of the thousands of spots, you picked X to apply to and interviewed at 3. The ones available in Phase II probably aren't any better than the ones where you applied and interviewed in Phase I. Good luck!:luck:

A lot of people on this board are suggesting ranking sites where you did not interview. Is this common/recommended? Is there an advantage to doing this- are sites really going to rank applicants who they had already rejected?

Here are last year's phase 2 sites:

A lot of people on this board are suggesting ranking sites where you did not interview. Is this common/recommended? Is there an advantage to doing this- are sites really going to rank applicants who they had already rejected?

I don't know if it's common but there's literally no disadvantage to doing so. If a site ranked you 10th on their list and you ranked them 10th on yours behind a bunch of sites where you weren't offered an interview (note that this is not the same as truly being rejected at a lot of sites, if you want to split hairs), you'll still match to them if and only if the first 9 people that they ranked chose or matched to other sites and the sites where you didn't interview don't rank you or didn't rank you higher than other applicants. It does mean that you're potentially matching to a site that you haven't "checked out" thoroughly or in person. However, it's rare for a site to rank an applicant that they haven't interviewed (which is why lots of sites had spots left in Phase II last year!), so it's unlikely to have an impact on anything but the match outcome stats (e.g., how many matched to 1st/2nd/3rd choice).

So I'm already feeling like my confidence is a little dampened by what my outcome has been thus far in the process (only 1 interview, 20 rejections, 1 "we may call you but not right now"). Today my clinical supervisor at my practicum wanted to hear about my interview and had me tell them all about it. My supervisor basically told me that I very likely wasn't going to be matched, based on the following rationale:

-I was not offered a business card at the end of the interview.
-When taking a tour of the facility, I was only accompanied by one instead of both interviewers.
-I was not told directly or indirectly ANY information regarding ranking or matching

While I respect my supervisor and believe they are very bright and know their way around the field, I am having a hard time coming to terms with this information. I thought I'd share it and see if any SDNers wanted to weigh in. Honest opinions, I'm not looking for a pity party or a pep talk. I just am not sure how much I should incorporate this information into my outlook on this whole process. Additionally my supervisor recommend I send a second thank you note (I have already sent one round to each person I interviewed with) and include some sort of information that will help me stand out and be memorable (certificate or award). Opinions?

Hmm, I don't agree with their rationale, at all, and wouldn't think much of it. I would definitely not send out a second round of thank you notes. One is more than enough, and you would not want to run the risk of annoying them. In fact, my supervisor at my internship site has complained about some of the thank-you emails received, saying that applicants can lay it on "too thick."

Thanks for posting the Phase II info! It's so weird to see that there are some very popular programs on that list that still ended up with an unfilled slot.

While I wouldn't doubt that the things you mention can reflect a site's "view" of you/your application at some sites, the portion about your supervisor recommending a second set of thank you notes makes me think he/she may be freaking out even more than you. I definitely would not recommend a second set of thank yous, to be sure.

As for the things your mentor pointed out, I wouldn't read too much into them. I had sites that gave me cards and sites that didn't, sites that walked me around and sites that simply gave us a map (with the latter reflecting the site where I matched), etc. At this point, whether those "signs" actually hold any significance or not is fairly irrelevant, because a) there's imply no way for you to know, and b) even if they were universal "bad signs" (which they aren't), there's nothing you can do about them at this point. Try to focus on the positive and hope for the best while preparing for the worst; this process is already stressful enough without having to unnecessarily burden yourself with yet another thing to worry about.

Related to the several posts above, I'm wondering what peoples' experiences have been with receiving "ranking related information" either overtly or in more disguised manners at their interviews. I'm well aware of the APPIC policy, just wondering whether this is something people have commonly experienced on the interview trail this year. I'm also wondering specifically whether people have had this experience at CC sites? I know there's no clear cut answer, just looking for some input. Feel free obviously to talk generally and omit site names or PM me if you'd prefer not to share here. Thanks!

I never heard anything about ranking from anyone (not even allusions to it) across 13 interviews.

I had one interviewer talk about ranking. It was at the very end of the interview (and my last interviewer of that day) and he simply provided me with advice to not try and over think my rankings and to rank sites based on what I feel would be the best match for me. I don't think this was inappropriate at all.

I could not agree more with Acronym's advice and think your supervisor is way off base. Most sites are not going to "signal" and what happens as an interview concludes can be driven by a variety of things completely unrelated to you or their ranking process--which is usually not done at the conclusion of the interview anyway! The mantra for this time of year should be "Rank your true preferences and then distract." Rumination over prior events, behavior is just going to add to distress and the process will work as it will work. You will not effect the process with thank you notes. The only working variable you are in control of at this point is your rank order and you should rank your own true preferences (not where you think you will be preferred) and then trust the difficult process and focus on anything else.

In all honesty the ratio of applications to interviews is concerning, but these three behaviors don't suggest anything negative about that site for you.

I had my interview and so I'm done with Phase I (other than ranking my 1 site and the 18 APA ones that didn't interview me). :soexcited:

If I don't match in Phase I, I'm hoping it's because a lot of sites all chose the same 100-500 applicants or so to interview and rank so they'll have a lot of spots left for Phase II.

Good luck to everyone!:luck:
you're ranking the ones that didnt interview you?
Did they send you a formal rejection email, and you're still ranking them?
I dont want to be a debbie downer, but why bother? I'd imagine if they sent you the rejection email, they wont bother to rank you, thus, no chance of it working?

Not trying to pick.. if there's something I'm missing (1 interview, 1 "we cant interview you at this time, but we might later" and 12 rejections on my part) I'd like to rank my other 12.

I made some poor choices in my education and it came back and bit me during internship. I think APA was really trying to make a statement against professional schools that are on probation and it detrimentally affected my chances. Unfortunately I agree with this stance, but I have already sunk so much money into my education I am at a point of no turning back, and I am just trying to finish my education and seek the best training opportunities I can to make up for the name that will be printed on my diploma.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am feeling much better today, I was just really hung up on it yesterday.

First, none of the sites sent me a "formal rejection email," even though a lot were "unable to offer [me] an interview" this year. None of the sites said, "we will not be ranking you," to the best of my recollection.

Is it highly unlikely that they'll rank me? Yup, certainly. But does it hurt me in any way to include some of them on my rank list? Nope, absolutely not. There's no downside for me if I rank them. I don't think I'll match to them (since I don't think they'll be ranking me). Some sites do rank applicants that they didn't interview because they don't want to end up in Phase II (this was more common back when the hectic Clearinghouse was Phase II) or because they don't conduct interviews.

I'll probably rank maybe 4-5 of the sites that were "unable to offer [me] an interview" this year (of the 19 that sent me something along those lines). I don't think I'll match to them, as I explained above, but why not include them? It takes about 30 seconds to add a site to your list (if I remember correctly and the system hasn't changed) and there's a tiny tiny tiny chance that you could match there. (A larger chance if the site says they'll be ranking you despite not having offered an interview, which a few sites do.)

Additionally, I'll be ranking the site where I interviewed as my #1 because I think it would be a great fit and I loved the site and people there. However, as I explained above, even if I ranked it 5th behind sites that didn't interview me, there's still no way that that would negatively impact the outcome of the match for me. If site A ranks me 1st for its 1 internship position and I rank it 5th and my 1-4 sites don't rank me or rank me lower than people who ranked those sites highly, I'll match at site A. If site A ranks me 10th and I rank it 5th, I'll match there if its 1-9th applicants match elsewhere.

Even though the numbers don't work out for hundreds of people every year who are left unmatched, the match's rank system seems just wonderful to me. (Note: I do not include the application or interview processes in this praise, just the ranking system. 😛 )

Good luck!:luck:

Anecdotally, it seems that this kind of interview to application ratio isn't uncommon for people who are geographically limited. This probably contributes to the relatively very low match rates for geographically limited applicants. I don't know if that's this person's experience, it's just something I've noticed in the 2 years that I've gone through it.

1 site stated that they would let me know if they were going to rank me. Another site emailed me to note that I was being "considered." Both are college counseling sites.

Hi there guys, hope the interview trail is treating everyone well! I had a question about potential connections between internships and post docs...

There are a couple internship sites I think I would very much like to rank highly as they would offer me new experiences and skills than I already have, but they're sort of niche specialties to some degree. I am wondering if I do an internship in an area that isn't really "my area" does it harm my chances of getting a post doc in a different area?

For example, if I do an internship in neurotrauma rehab would that affect my chances of getting a generalist pediatric post doc... or if I do an internship at a public school site that happens to have a lot of clinical focus, would that disrupt my chances of a generalist peds post doc. There are some good internships in those areas that would give me very different experiences and skill sets, but I don't want to consider them highly if it would be a detriment to me going into a ped psych post doc.

Sorry for the rambling, just trying to determine if what you do in post doc is expected to be a continuation of what you were already doing (in internship) or if it's reasonable to go in a new direction in post doc. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated. 🙂

That's a really good question and I don't have a real answer. I hope some of the more experienced people will read this thread and answer your question!

What I've noticed is that a lot of people who do internship at a site go on to do post doc there, sometimes in a slightly modified area. This seems to be pretty common at community mental health centers but I don't know about hospitals or other settings.

-I was not offered a business card at the end of the interview.
-When taking a tour of the facility, I was only accompanied by one instead of both interviewers.
-I was not told directly or indirectly ANY information regarding ranking or matching

This is crazy making....I would disregard all of it. 99.5% of people won't even consider any of the above when they are interviewing applicants.

This is true---some sites prefer (or expect) their current interns to continue on as post-docs. It's not always the case, but it's definitely something you can ask about while interviewing.

As for "unrelated" internships affecting your post-doc chances, I can only offer what I know/have heard about neuropsych with the expectation that at least some of that will generalize to other niche areas.

The amount that your internship should emphasize your eventual desired specialty (e.g., neuropsych) is ultimately up to you, and is based in large part on your grad school experiences. In my case, for example, I had a LOT of neuropsych experience in my doctoral program, and thus I was told by multiple sites (including those that encouraged me to apply for their post-docs a year later) that I could "afford" to be more generalist in nature during internship. Conversely, if I'd had relatively little neuropsych exposure prior to internship, and I hoped to obtain a neuropsych post-doc, I'd want to make sure most of my internship rotations were neuropsych-oriented.

One caveat, though--you'll probably want to do at least SOME work related to your eventual career path/niche while interning. In my case, if I'd chosen to attend a generalist internship, I'd still want to do at least one or two neuropsych rotations in addition to whatever types of therapy/intervention I chose.

re: texas child study center
i haven't worked with dr. stark, but i have worked with jane simpson-gray, who is eminently cool. they are both pretty ebt-oriented, and i imagine the training will have a nice structure. i know they're applying for accreditation, but won't be eligible for another couple of years (have to be around for 5 years or something). i'd be stunned if they didn't get accreditation when they finally go through the process.

i'd also love to hear which factors people are considering in their ranking decisions. mine are:

lifestyle (what my day-to-day would be like)
feel of the place
prestige (doors the placement could open in the future/for post-doc)
people are like me (similar professional goals -- faculty and current interns)
professional development/research opportunities
geographic location (closeness to family)
clinical work (population i like working with)
clinical training (expertise of trainers)
time to work on dissertation
happiness/stress level of current interns

Can i hijack for a quick second to ask a dumb question?

Site A is a much better fit from a program level than Site B. I think, therefore, that Site A may rank me higher than Site B. However, I'm leaning towards ranking Site B above Site A for a variety of other reasons. Would such a decision make it less likely for me to match at all if I rank a site that I fit better with (and am therefore assuming that they will rank me more highly as a result) below one that I do not?

After thoroughly reading the information on ranking and working through the examples, I have come to the conclusion that you should rank sites according to your true preferences. If you rank a less preferred site above a more preferred site the only thing you are doing is hurting your chance of matching at the more preferred site.
