2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I heard somewhere that most interview invites go out the week after Thanksgiving. Is that true? I'm starting to get really nervous that I have not been contacted by any of my sites (with good or bad news)! Most of them had deadlines of 11/15 or later. Should I be worried? This whole process is so stressful and I feel like I am turning into a basket case!:scared:

Typically (from my understanding and experience being familiar with three separate cohorts of applicants), sites with deadlines that late won't get back to you until very late November or early December.

Most of the cohorts above me didn't hear anything until after Thanksgiving.

I was looking at old emails from last year and Dartmouth was the only one of my sites that let me know (rejection) before December 1st. I got 3 interview offers last year, all about a week into December. Based on this thread, 2 other sites that I applied to have already offered interviews this year (but no rejections yet), with one of them offering interviews well before its recent deadline. So, I'm not worried yet but I'm very impatient.

On the other hand, sites that have quick turnaround times (<5 days after the deadline) are almost certainly just sorting by stats, like hours, publications, etc., and not considering the "meat" of the application (cover letters, essays, etc.). That bugs me. (At least that's my theory of how hundreds of apps can be processed in a few days.) It also bugs me to get the exact same rejection email 2 years in a row. The first time, I thought they meant it. This time, I see it's just easy to send and makes it easier for applicants to hear/accept.

So hard to wait!😴

I got an interview offer from Phoenix Children's last Thursday via email.

Thanks for your response! 3 members of my cohort were contacted by their sites last week. One received 2 interviews, another received an interview from Dartmouth, and the third received a rejection from Dartmouth. I was kind of bummed to not hear anything back yet, but I tried to remind myself that it might be due to the late deadlines. Your theory of the quick sorting makes sense, and I agree that it's really frustrating to think that certain sites may not even read the "meat" of the essay! I guess I am okay with waiting if it means there is a chance that sites are actually reviewing my application in its entirity. Still, the waiting game is enough to drive someone mad! I hope you (and all of us going through this process) get some good news soon!

Thanks for your response. That is good to know. I guess that just means more waiting around! I can't wait until this process is over!

Just received an invitation to interview at University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Psychiatry.

Thanks to all who are posting and keeping us updated.

Rejected Denver health adult outpatient/inpatient. 🙁 first response I've gotten.

Rejection from Cincinnati Children's Hospital (Child Clinical Track).

must have been a mass email from Cincinnati Children's because I just received the rejection also.

Just got an email from The Reading Hospital and Medical Center for an interview! 🙂

For those of you who are interested, I just got an invitation for an interview at Bay Pines VA. It's a personalized email, and the interview dates mentioned are two Thursdays (Jan. 5 and 12). Good luck everybody!

I also received an invitation for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The email was personalized, and for the General Psyc Track. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone and thanks to those putting efforts into this thread. It's SO helpful!

I'm waiting to hear from the health track

Received an email invite for an interview at Duke - Child Clinical (General) Track, Jan 13. Seemed to be a BCC email.

so how realistic / common is the "some programs send out invitations in waves" statement? Can anyone name any specific programs that have a history of this? Should we assume we are still in the running for a given program (that has sent out at least some acceptances) until we receive a rejection, or not?

I have heard that MUSC does this, on a rolling basis, and this appears to have been the case in the last couple of interview cycles (they also seem to interview a lot of people). I also think that many programs are track-specific, where different tracks send out info on different dates. So I would pay close attention for which track someone is offered/not offered an interview.

Yes a lot of sites do "rolling" interview offers. For example, Mercy First in NY sent out interview offers before their deadline for applications, so they must be rolling as well.

Just receiver a rejection email from UAB. Was not personalized "dear applicant," but if any other recipients are on there I can't see their email addresses-so that's good!

I'm not entirely certain this is a good strategy, but I personally cross off a site off my list if I hear that they have sent out (1) a mass email invitation to interview, (b) for the specific track I applied to, (c) after the application deadline. It is helpful when sites follow a mass email invite with a mass email rejection, but a lot of sites seem to wait until Dec 15 to send out rejection emails.

I'm still hopeful to hear from sites when they have sent out personalized email invites or are doing phone calls (these are more likely to occur on a rolling basis) and I am definitely hopeful when they have only sent out invites to a track other than the one I applied to.

Sorry to hear 🙁 Fingers crossed for better news in the days ahead!

Congrats to all those receiving interviews, and hang in there to those who have not.

As for me I am still receiving confirmations from sites. . .got one from Iowa State University today. I hate this. Oh well. . .

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if most sites practiced some sort of rolling interview scheduling, at least to a small degree. They might send out their first batch of interview offers and rejections to the "definite yes" and "definite no" categories (perhaps encompassing the upper 1/3 and lower 1/3), for example. They then have some sort of "maybe" group (the middle 1/3) to which they extend offers based on 1) the response rates of invited applicants, and 2) feedback from faculty about applicants after early interview dates.

Just got a phone call from Yale University School of Medicine inviting me for an interview. I applied to the Hispanic Clinic and Outpatient Services at the CT Mental Health Center. 🙂

Awesome, congrats!

Just got interview offers at the Mountain Home VA (phone) and Cherokee Health Systems (mass email)!

Invitation for the university of Louisville school of medicine...

I'm happy for everybody who has gotten interviews this far. I feel lucky and cursed for having only applied to counseling centers because they don't notify until much later. That means I can sit tight right now not having heard anything, but may get 10 rejections (or invites) in one day in Dec. Ahhhhhh!!!! 😀

Hi everyone,

Forgive me if this posts twice, I'm new to posting!

I got a personalized invitation email today from Bay Pines VA. It listed two interview dates: January 5 and January 12 (both Thursdays). Hope this helps everyone for planning purposes! There's plenty of sites I applied to that didn't mention their interview dates.

A colleague received an invite from Bay Pines VA in Florida. It was a personalized email.

Just got an invite to University of Chicago Medical Center (appears to be a mass email) for the Weight and Eating Disorders Track 🙂

hi all, was offered an interview from St. Luke's Hospital in NYC for next week. (looks like a non-personalized bcc mass email).

just got an interview invite from University of Chicago Medical Center adult neuropsych track program! I think it was a mass email, but not 100% sure.

continued best of luck, everyone!
