2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have experience with sex offender treatment, forensic evaluations, inpatient, and severe mental illness... including working on the forensic unit of an inpatient facility for people with severe mental illness. Not going to lie, I was blown away by that one.

Wow! Yep, sounds like you should have been a perfect fit for that site! I can't imagine a large number of other applicants had that array of experiences. What a crazy process we're enduring.

Do you know if the budget issue was for the Chattahoochee Florida State Hospital only? I have an interview at Northeast Florida State Hospital. I also applied to GEO Care/South Florida State Hospital. Did it mention in the email if this was a state-wide issue? I hope they are not pulling funding for all Florida state hospital internships! Still waiting to hear from 18 sites!

My inbox has been shockingly quiet today, with 11 sites to go (four of which have already contacted people with both invites AND rejections so I'm thoroughly confused!!)

I'm getting less anxious and more excited as December 15th approaches. I have 3 interviews and 8 rejections, with a few great fit places still pending so I'm hoping for some more good news. I don't know where this sudden optimism is coming from, but I hope it stays! lol

Good luck to everybody, I hope you get some great emails this week.

Agreed! This definitely obliterated any notions I had of this being a logical process. Good luck to you- I hope you get the experiences you're looking for with forensics and inpatient. I really enjoy working with those populations.

Still waiting on...

MUSC - Adult Track
Center for Behavioral Med (in Kansas City)
Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan
St. Louis Consortium
Yale - DBT Track

Anyone heard from these sites?

Someone posted that they heard from St. Louis on Friday I believe. I am waiting on them as well, as I really liked the site! Good luck to you!

It was specific to Florida State Hospital. To the best of my knowledge, GeoCare is privately owned.

McGuire VA rejection email went out.

for those that have heard from UNC Chapel Hill was it by phone or email? Applied there and my cell is disconnected as someone stole it this weekend so now freaking out what if they called!!!

I am also waiting on UNC Chapel Hill. Have people heard from charlotte, chapel hill, or both?

These sites are really dragging their heels until the last possible minute! I guess the procrastination we learn in graduate school really lasts a lifetime!

Nothing here either way. Still holding onto some hope :xf: Good luck to you :luck:

Seems odd that no one's heard anything as they notified pretty early last year. Good luck to you too! 👍

I received an interview from UNC Chapel Hill (personalized e-mail) on Dec 7th. I applied to the community track.

Aww crap. Looks like you are correct. That one was a tad more of a stretch in terms of fit, I suppose, than most of my sites. I have family in STL, though, so that consortium and Fulton State were my only real shots at ending up somewhere close to family 😛.

Again, its importat to note that "fit" should not be equated to "I have done some of that already."
"I have done some of that already" would NOT be a fit for us.

My VA actually likes people who dont have alot of exposure to EBTs and therapy in general, (although you have to have enough to be skilled in the basics) because we have a crap-ton of that here for you to learn. That is, this internship is less useful for someone who did some PE in a practica in grad school than for those that didnt get to do that. Thats what we are selling....EBT intervention work (alot of VAs, not just ours) and we want to see people that actually have this gap and are enthusiastically looking to fill it. We (internships) want to teach people things. Thats why we are here. Dont forget that.

Just received a mass email invite to the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners :woot: interview dates are January 20, 27, 30 and February 1

Ooo, I'm also still waiting on U of Rochester Med Center (adult). I can't believe I forgot about that one. It's my FAVORITE of the sites from which I'm still waiting to hear! :xf:

Email rejection from University of Idaho Counseling Center this afternoon around 2pm Pacific. Addressed dear applicant.

Wonderful...8 rejections, 22 apps, 0 interviews. Starting to fear the worst...

I wish we had a "like" button for this. I really want to believe (and do believe, for many sites) that they are actually interested in training interns, not just receiving damn near free labor. I applied to a lot of sites that I perceived having an excellent "fit" for, based on not just my previous experience, but areas where I lacked experience that I really wanted - and that those sites could help me there. I hope those weren't all wasted applications because I dont' already have all the experiences I am seeking.

For what it's worth, I have 2 interviews (Boston consortium and River Valley in CT) and 7 rejections (all listed). Still waiting on 9 sites.

Hi there,

I don't believe that the UNC Chapel Hill counseling center has contacted applicants yet. UNC Charlotte did send out personalized email invites today. Skype interviews are available on 1/2 -1/6 and on 1/9, 1/10.

Good luck to everyone this week!

Have been sick today for the second time in the last month. Ugh. At least the fever has kept me from checking my e-mail and this board obsessively though . . .

Regarding a couple things that people have posted a while back:

1. Whether sites like the Detroit and Cleveland VAs that have open houses are open to all applicants or whether they do cuts. The Detroit VA, at least, does do some preliminary cuts and sends out rejection letters before their open house. I wrote to the training director there after seeing that some people on this board received rejections and she was nice enough to explain the process to me a bit. Although they don't do formal interviews at this open house, it is a chance for them to get to know applicants and can inform their rankings. However, they only rank the top 2/3 of applicants they receive and try to spare the bottom 1/3 of applicants the expense of visiting by informing them that they are unlikely to be ranked before the open house. As far as I know, they may still be doing this. If you are hesitant about booking a flight there, I would recommend writing the DT to ask about the status of your application. She was nice enough to inform me that I was in no danger of receiving a rejection letter after I wrote her. 🙂

2. Regarding whether running an internship is a money losing endeavor, I can tell you that at least for some sites it definitely is. Even though people from my program normally do quite well in the match process, our DCT explored the possibility of setting up a "Captive Internship" in a clinic associated with our university a few years back (as a few other Ph.D. programs do have for their students). Even though this is a large and well-funded clinic, when they crunched the numbers they found that they would lose money by doing this and the funding for it would have had to have been subsidized by our department. Also, regarding this discussion, it is true to people with Master's degrees can bill insurance. However, it did come up in our departments exploration of this that some insurance companies won't reimburse them as much as practitioner's with Ph.D.'s, Psy.D.'s, or the types of licenses associated with these degrees in our state.

Got the UNH CC email for an interview as well! 👍

Also received a personalized [Dear My Name] interview invite this afternoon from University of Illinois - Chicago Counseling Center.

Lots of sites/programs say this, so I'd like to see the numbers. I just want to know more about it. Also, psychologists at one of my practica were annoyed that they were billing the same as masters level people, so I don't know if that's a state or insurance issue, but it came up a few times.

Hope you feel better!

How quickly you take to using "we". Funny stuff.

One of my colleagues who only applied to neuro sites was invited to interview at that program last week but I don't have any details.

Duke just sent out a well-timed rejection email (based on the discussion from this thread). Definitely knew this one was on its way. 🙁
Hi!

Sorry to hear that . Was that the counseling center?

Just got a phone call for an interview at FIU Counseling Center! 😀😀

Still haven't heard from Manatee Glen though....

I worked for Manatee Glen as an undergraduate and loved my time there. They are wonderful people and the site is wonderful. I would have applied as Well except no accreditation. They are the people who gave me the drive to continue my studies in psychology. I will be hoping for you.

Thank you for posting. No news is good news still in my book but it was a long shot. Oh well!! 😉

There's this weird element (its in there, but its all tangled up with other stuff). It's the "what can we do for our interns' aspect.

Applicant A and Applicant B are star grad students with comparable stats and potential. A would be a good fit and has done some stuff that we do and wants to do more. B knows the basics but has never had the opp to learn X, Y, Z EBT protocols. Both would be good for us, but who would be better helped by us? Probably applicant B. I think there is an element of this in many internships...its quite a big one in our selections.

Ugh...no news today, and I'm still waiting to hear from 6 sites. Since it's 5:30 PM here and all my remaining sites are either on EST or CST, I'm assuming I don't have a chance of hearing anything today. Frustrating, but only 3 more days!

I just got an email invite to the U of Manitoba Clinical Health Psych residency for the rural, northern, and child tracks (rejection for the adult track).

They have a new secretary who likely missed notifying me, but if any of you are in the same boat the director said he'd be going through the list soon to notify whoever is left.

This is my hometown residency so I'm REALLY excited to interview, even if it's on Friday the 13th

The email didn't say, this is the bulk of the rest of the email:

Due to uncertainties about funding and staffing, which will not be resolved until after Florida's Legislative Session in early 2012, Florida State Hospital has decided not to participate in Phase I of the Match. We will be conducting no interviews. We may or may not participate in Phase II of the Match, depending on whether there is more certainty at that time. If not, we would fill our internship positions sometime after Phase II is settled.

Please feel free to e-mail the Training Director late in January 2012
for any updates about Phase II. Should we participate in Phase II, we
will make selection decisions based on the AAPI materials only, and will
not require interviews. We appreciate the applications that you
submitted by the deadline, and we wish each of you a successful Phase I
match.

They also apologized for the lateness of the notification, stating they'd hoped it would be resolved in time. It was a very nice, though sad, email.

I also applied to Geo Care/South Florida, though it appears they are private now, under Geo Care, so they may not be affected by this. Hard to say, guess we'll have to wait to see what happens...

0-3 over the last 3 days (Broughnton State Hospital, Penn. Hospital, Conn. Valley)......I've been rejected so much over the last few days, I feel like I am at the club.....😀 FYI....If you reject my application, don't keep my hopes up by writing, ".will notify you if this status changes." Its like when my ex-broke up with me and she said we can be friends.... HAHAHAHAHA
.

Invite to Wichita Collaborative Psychology Internship Program- KUSM-W :soexcited::banana:

email personalized and indicated that a coordinator would contact me in a few days for scheduling my interview. WAHOO!!!

To say you were lacking in any way felt like self sabotage given the glut of applicants.

I am sorry you got that poor advice. I really think acknowledging that the sites has something you want, but don't have/didn't get in grad school can be key. Especially at some sites. Again, not all. But really, I'm surprised by that advice you were given, as any reasonably faculty member adviser or supervsior knows that you are lacking in many things at this stage and...THATS OK. If you weren't, you wouldn't be required to do a fulltime internship to get your degree. Humility and being honest with yourself is always a glowing quality as well.

Now, dont take this too far. Yes, of course there is an element of fit that is about "is this site's offerings, as a whole, consistent with my trajectory and career goals." This does require that you have some kind of demonstrated interest or experience in some element of the work though. This can be very, very broadly defined however. It doesn't mean that you have to want to be a VA psychologist or specialize in PTSD to apply for VA internships. And yes, you need to have basics. If you have never done PE or Seeking Safety..thats cool with us. If you have never done CBT for depression, thats a problem. 😉 If you have never been in VA, that's cool with us. If you have never been outside your university's training clinic, that's not cool with us.

Just in case I missed it, has anyone heard from the Bedford VA or the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia?

1. Whether sites like the Detroit and Cleveland VAs that have open houses are open to all applicants or whether they do cuts.

I think Cleveland said in their materials that they would notify you if you were invited to the Open House.

Nice to know I was in the bottom 1/3 of Detroit's pile 🙁

Thanks for the info, LMK. Unfortunately, these budget cuts make it more competitive at all the other sites. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they are able to work it out 🙂 Best of luck to you.

"It most certainly is less important to them than it is to the applicant, but there are practical limitations on how quickly rejections can be sent out."

Although it certainly would be time consuming to send out rejections with individual feedback for each applicant, how much time does it really take to type an email address in the BCC line of a form rejection email? Thirty seconds or so? At that rate, even if a site received 300 applications they wanted to reject, it would only take roughly 2 1/2 hours of time to send notices to everyone. That really doesn't seem like too much time to me if it's stretched out over a week (i.e., 1/2 hour day). I don't mean to be disrespectful, and maybe there is more to sending rejections than what it seems.

It wouldn't bother me if I thought they are still considering my application, but it seems unethical to continue to string along applicants if they are no longer under consideration.

This. It is completely unacceptable and indefensible to drag out rejections for nearly a month. There are plenty of sites that are more prestigious than Duke, and that received more applications than Duke did, and they still managed to send out rejections in a timely manner. I know they're not the only ones, but that doesn't excuse completely unprofessional behavior.
