Anyone have the UMich list?
 
They probably ran into some of this on the trail: only two matches at one program (home).

For the most part, I agree, but with a caveat: for competitive specialties that either have few programs nationally or few spots per program (derm, ophtho, uro, rad onc), it can at least influence your experience when 4th year rolls around. My experiences in derm were that programs seemed to AT MOST invite two people from the same school to interview (based on my personal experience as well as meeting and talking to plenty of applicants on the trail). In derm, if a program has 30 interview spots (and 400-500 strong applicants), it's at least reasonable to assume they will not be filling these precious few spots with a ton of kids from the same school. In any specialty where interviews are a difficult commodity to come by, this could potentially mean the interview offers are diluted among you and your classmates. Obviously there are a ton of factors, but this year there were only two of us applying at my school and we both received 15-20 interviews each, but only overlapped at our home program. Last year our school had 7 or 8 match, but they all said they received 4-8 interviews on average (and still almost no overlap).

I realize this is only one perspective, and in a different specialty than urology, and I will also concede that the bigger star you are, the less of an issue this becomes. Just my thoughts.

That said, there are some schools that seem to pump out 7-10 derm matches each year, which is impressive and probably at least partially reflects the relatively strong presence the department has among students at that school.

That's a lot of students in their graduating class choosing that specialty. A match list with 5 in Urology at top programs is stronger than one with 15 at random community programs in undesirable locations, unless you happen to have inside information that more students wanted urology and failed to match.

The n value of students in any given class is not high enough to achieve true randomization in any given year, it's going to fluctuate significantly with those particular students' preferences.

In that case (and I know this is incredibly subjective), do any current med students feel like pointing out the top programs for various specialties? I know USNews ranks IM, peds, and a few others but what about urology, ob/gyn, general surgery, etc?

The us news rankings are garbage. You can find some of this on the specialty specific sites; Cliff notes: it's subjective and controversial, and people's rank lists don't always reflect even their sense of program reputation. My list certainly wasn't composed based on my perception of program strength.

You can find the many attempts at these lists on the residency boards. It's pretty subjective, but there's usually a handful of programs at the top of everyone's list for any given specialty.

For the most part these lists (with some exceptions, BNI neurosurg, BP ophtho, and a few others) will be MGH, BWH, UCSF, Hopkins, Penn, UCLA, Mayo, Wash U, Duke, Columbia, Cornell, etc in some order. Not particularly useful if you ask me. There are a few exceptions where the traditionally top programs aren't elite, like UCSF/MGH peds and Columbia rads, but they're few and far between.

Where is the rest of the Penn list? Unless the 10+ people doing rads didn't match, I don't see them here.

10 into Urology just means 10 strong students chose Urology.

I think it depends on numerous factors. I'm just saying it's inspiring to see that putting out that many in one class is possible. My school put 14 into ortho this year.. I'm sure that's inspiring for the potential orthopods.

I think there's enough competition within and among uro applicants that it's difficult no matter who you are.. look at the 77% match rate this year. Then you throw a large group of applicants from the same geographic region together and you're looking at increased competition among a few spots. For instance, if my classmates and I chose to try to stay in Texas, there would be 11 from my school alone competing for the 19 spots in Texas.. and there are 9 other medical schools in Texas, plus out of state applicants.
Of course that's only an issue if we all want to apply to the same schools, which may not be the case. There are basically 3x as many of us planning to apply as usual from our school, so we're a little nervous about how many of us can match, and if we're going to be stealing spots from each other.
 
Uro was 86% last year... It's yet to be seen if the increased competitiveness is a trend or annual variation.

I think uro match rate has been @ the same lvl as other surg. subspecialties esp. ent & ortho, with some annual fluctuations.



The % of a class matched into a specialty might be more indicative (if indicative at all 🙂 than the absolute # of matched students because the class size varies a lot across schools.

I know Penn is badass....but so many people want to stay at philly? that towns is kinda of a hole. Interesting that non went to Penn for EM, it was a sentiment I heard echoed on the trails.

Most people who actually live in Philly, including myself, love it. I matched somewhere else for personal reasons and am already thinking about how much I'm going to miss this city. In a nutshell, fantastic affordable housing, unbelievable restaurants, along with the typical perks you get with a city (sports, art etc.). It's a very "livable" city and QOL can be quite high on a resident's salary.

Re: staying at Penn's programs, I think this is commonplace at institutions that have top programs. If you're going to peds, for example, CHOP and Boston's Children's are probably the two best peds residencies in the country. Then throw in the fact that by the end of med school, you've worked with/done research with your local program, might be settled (married, whatever), or maybe just don't want the hassle of moving. Hence all those CHOP matches. Many specialties within the Penn system are considered "top" but you mentioned an important exception, EM. This has more to do with the fact that many people going into EM don't want to be at academic hospitals where they essentially just triage people while specialists work up the patients. You'll get much more hands on experience at place like Temple, for instance, which is popular among Penn grads, then our ER.

I don't know what city your talking about but Philadelphia is really nice, even the bad parts are getting better (thank the hipsters for that). This comes from someone who lives 20 minutes from NYC. The only problem with it is the vast numbers of hipsters

Only been to Philly a few times but from what I've seen I agree. There are nice parts like Center City and bad parts like North Philly. Seemed like a decent place to spend a few years but clearly not Chicago, NYC, or LA

The dog lab was stopped in 2007 or 2008, they used pigs for a year, but they didn't work well from what I understand. So I doubt it's because of the dog lab. I don't think the graduating M4s ever did any of that.

The dog lab was a tremendous learning experience, though.

They still do rats and frogs though.

To be honest, a lot of MCW people go into anesthesia because we A. have an amazing anesthesia department and B. require a third year monthlong rotation in anesthesia. Exposure is key. This was still a record year with 15% of the students doing gas though. Our school usually ranges from 8-11% anesthesia (national average of about 4%)
