2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me too! What does this mean? Only some people are invited to the open house, and not all who applied there? I want to go, I wouldn't know how to rank them if I didn't. Are you going? Thanks and congrats!!
Congrats! I'm not really sure what it means. To my knowledge, it is the only forensic site that takes this approach. I am only going if I don't get a lot of interviews. I do not want to spend the money or time on a non-mandatory site visit. It's a good option if I start getting rejections, though.

I was so pumped about getting my first interview that I called a few people and sent texts before replying to the email. My preferred date got taken quickly and now I might be overlapping in January 😳 Lesson learned

That's a good plan. I guess we can decide whenever we want since the email didn't say to let them know if we are attending or not. I don't know of any forensic sites that do this either.

Invitation to an open house at Western State Hospital (forensic site) received 11.26.2013. Open house is scheduled for 1.8.2014. Attendance is not mandatory for consideration. Generic email to invitees.

Just received this invite too! Woohoo, my first one

Hang in there, everyone. I went from demoralized to jumping up and down in seconds!

Did anyone here apply to the Yale DBT track? And if so, any word from them? You can PM if you like. Thanks!

I just got an interview invitation from Duke SOM for the Child Clinical Track. It looks like a mass email, and the only date they offer is January 17.

SOOOOO excited about this one 🙂

Rejection from Geisinger Medical Center adult track today. Knew it was coming, but still a slight bummer since it was my last in-state site.

Sorry! And thanks for sharing this experience.

This helps me understand why some sites might have a "maybe" pile of applicants for interviews - maybe they offer their top candidates the first choice of slots, then offer up what's left to the "maybes?"

Mass email rejection from Western State Hospital, guess I am just not a good match for state hospitals! Congrats to those who got interviews!

My site has three "piles" rejection, interview and maybe. The maybe pile contains applicants that are qualified, but we are limited on interview slots to 40. Offers are first extended to those 40 in the "interview pile". If there are any applicants that cannot accept an interview slot that interview slot is offered to someone in the maybe pile. When all interview slots have been filled the maybe pile moves to the rejection pile. That's just the way my site handles it, I'm not sure how others handle it.

Last year I was definitely in the "maybe pile" for one of my sites. Too many qualified applicants, not enough spots. They told me to rank them anyway. Time constraints and resources just do not allow sites to interview all of the qualified applicants they get.

i realized two nights ago that checking this site + my email incessantly was getting to be bad for my emotional health, so I decided not to check all day yesterday until my will gave out and i checked before bed (don't do this!!) and collapsed into a devastation when I saw that Western Psych had sent out invites and that on last year's thread they only sent them out on one day. cried all night and all morning. my boyfriend sent me this link to take my mind off it...and it did- i even smiled a bunch! for all of those who are sad today: http://distractify.com/fun/humor/scout-is-the-single-most-composed-dog-on-the-planet/

Thanks, and sorry to hear about the rejection. I think it may depend on the state hospital. I was rejected at Utah and Patton, but invited to Western State. It is a better fit in several ways.

I had a pretty similar night last night, but this totally made me smile. Thank you!

I didn't reply soon enough indicating my preference. They only take 6 applicants per interview day at The University of Kansas Medical Center and gave us all three dates to pick from. The assistant emailing me said the date in December got snatched up quickly to her surprise. I had many sites on my list only having interviews in January, so now I may have to be double booked :arghh: So lesson learned is respond immediately if you get an interview and have a specific date preferred!

I didn't mean to imply that you were in the "maybe" pile, just that due to the high demand for some interview dates, sites might offer interviews first to a group of preferred applicants, then offer up the remainder. In this case, it sounds like you could be near the top but still not get the date you want. Thanks for the tip about scheduling quickly!

Me too! Mass email as well and not a lot of details about the interview. Hopefully once we acknowledge our attendance they will send more information!

I have my first rejection and have moved out of the maybe pile for one site. X-P

I will not be an intern at the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System. Best of wishes to those who are selected. (*^。^*)

It is nice to know that someone has received my application anyway!

Hi all,

This post will be a running list of which internship sites have notified applicants (either interview invites or rejections). In the past, this has been part of the main APPIC thread, but we've had issues with it getting lost in the shuffle before, so I decided to start a separate thread. So, when you get a notification from a site, please either post it here or PM to it me (click my username and then "start conversation") if you wish to remain anonymous. I'll update the list daily...

Bellevule/NYU--invite received 11/18 (adult track, forensic track) via personal email; interview received 12/4...
Yale School of Medicine--rejection received 11/20 via mass email (adult outpatient)

I posted earlier about this, but noticed that it has not been added. NYU-Bellevue (child/adolescent track) interview on December 12th. I was notified via personal e-mail on Tuesday, November 19th. Thanks!

Sorry, I could have sworn that I added this before; it's in the list now! Again, apologies and thanks for catching that.

Mass email rejection from St Elizabeth's Hospital received today (11/26)

Just an FYI, I spoke to one of the supervisors at the Palo Alto VA today and they are still reviewing applications so if any of you are awaiting news from PAVA know that it won't be coming this week. Based on what the supervisor said I wouldn't expect anything until late next week.

I remember having called one of my sites an hour after receiving an invite and all but one of the half-dozen dates had already been taken. So yep, getting back to folks as quickly as possible is always a good idea.

Interview from University of Minnesota Medical School via personalized e-mail 11/26. They did not specify that I would be interviewing with a specific rotation but said I would be able to meet with the supervisors of all 3 rotations.

Offered early or late time slot on 1/6 or 1/13.

SO excited to have my first interview!!

I also applied to MEDVAMC and haven't heard anything. I do think a lot of sites will notify after Thanksgiving.

Congrats! I didn't hear from them but I applied for a different track.

I have not heard from Boston Consortium. I would say, though, the odds are very high they will be contacting tomorrow. They said in their brochure on or before Nov 27, and the specificity of this date suggests they're serious about it. Plus last year, they said Nov. 28, and according to the thread from last year, that's when they contacted with both invites and rejections.

Minneapolis VA is one of my top choices. 🙁 Maybe I'll still hear from them if it wasn't a mass email. Congrats!

Has anyone heard from Massachusetts General Hospital - Adult Clinical Psychology Track or Massachusetts Mental Health Center? Thanks.

Me too 🙁

Me three!!! So far, I have one interview and one rejection, and twenty more sites to hear from. I am starting to really worry- some people already have two, three interviews 😢😢😢😢😢

Don't worry, your ratio of accepted / rejected is far more important than how many sites you've heard from this early. Some people simply applied to more sites that contact earlier.

Still waiting on 17 sites. No rejections or interviews. I am also starting to get worried.

Still waiting on 17 sites. No rejections or interviews. I am also starting to get worried.

Last year, things trickled like they're doing now, and then the majority of sites got back to people in December. I've heard from a couple of my sites already, but most of them haven't notified anyone, so I'm not too worried. I think I'd get concerned if other people were getting both invites and rejections from my sites and I weren't, but that's so far not the case.

What if they've notified other people but you haven't heard anything yourself?

I suppose it depends on how many of your total this has happened for, and how confident you were about these sites relative to those you haven't heard from. If you're worried enough about it, you can always look into applying to more sites (there are plenty with Dec. 1 deadlines or later). This is what I was going to do if I hadn't received a certain number of invitations by Thanksgiving (but only because I expected to hear back from about six sites by then).

Connecticut Valley Psychology Internship/River Valley Services, invite via email. Dates: 1/6, 1/10, 1/14.

Also, the email stated: "Please contact me by noon eastern time on Tuesday December 3, 2013 to confirm your interest in the interview. If I do not hear from you by that time, I will extend this offer to an applicant on our interview waiting list."

No word from MEDVAMC for me either. Waiting on them, Brown, UCSD, Boston Consortium and UW.

I hadn't realized that internships did wait-lists at the interview stage so this was helpful. I have 3 that seem to have disappeared into the void so that might explain why. Not going to hold my breath on any of them, but that's okay. Before I started this process I decided I was going to reframe any rejections as "An opportunity to save on travel expenses".

Kennedy Krieger Institute interview invitation for all tracks via mass email. Stated in the email that they will follow up with another email containing specific dates for track interviews. Everyone should be notified by the end of the weekend. Woohoo!

Me too! It was such a pleasant surprise to get the email this late in the evening! SO EXCITED! 🙂 🙂 🙂
