2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any day now... If it helps, my best friend called me last night to tell me she had a feeling I'd hear from them today. She's been right before, but that could be confirmation bias.

Funny thing----I talked to my best friend last night and I said I'm hoping to hear from U of Minnesota and Towson University today. He said I'll hear from one of them today and one tomorrow.

Did anyone calling UMiami this morning get through? So far I haven't been able to get someone.

Edit: Finally got through at almost 10. Oh, anxiety.

Woke up to a rejection from Devereux. Felt this was probably coming. I saw that they raised their assessment hours by a lot this year, which likely made me less competitive, and it wasn't the best fit. Actually perhaps relieved to get this rejection, but hoping the rest of the day goes better. Still waiting on 10 more sites!

Hoping for good news for everyone!

Has anyone received a response from Boston Children's Hospital after emailing the program coordinator? (the app. instructions told applicants to email about the status of their app this week). Has anyone independently received news about an invite for this site?

Emailed and haven't heard anything yet.

aw boo! hope you hear some good news today!

Also haven't heard anything from Boston Children's--the whole "e-mail us during this week" thing seemed kind of weird to me... In another spot on their website it sounded more like they followed the usual procedures (we invite strong candidates yadda yadda...) so we'll see!

Nothing yet.

How do people feel about thank-you notes (I was thinking mostly email)? I keep hearing varied opinions about it "not being required" or you're "not supposed to" or "it's good to mention the fit AGAIN". Thoughts?
What have people done so far?

Everyone seems to have different thoughts on this. Some people might find it annoying to get another email, and if you interviewed with more than one person, I have heard that it can be hard to know who to send it to. One of my professors suggested possibly sending a brief hand written thank you so that it can more globally reach the site than an email would.

I was wondering about this so I asked my training director. She told me she asked the DCTs of the APA approved sites near my school. There was no consensus. Her impression was that some sites that seemed more "touchy-feelie" would appreciate a written thank you note while a simple email to the training director at other sites would suffice.

I don't know generally but I know NY sites have all agreed NOT to accept thank yous, so if you're applying in that area, it's a definite no.

When you say not accept thank yous, like they will just toss them in the trash if they got a thank you card in the mail?

has anyone applied to/heard from AHRC- New York City or the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center?

Personalized rejection from UNC Chapel Hill.

Sorry to hear! I applied there also and I know they sent offers a few weeks ago but I still haven't heard either way. What time did it come through? Maybe I'll be hearing from them later today.

This made me giggle.

Glad I could add some comic relief to this stressful situation. 🙂 I just have this picture in my head of thank you notes being thrown into the fire and not being ranked high because we did the polite and etiquette-appropriate thing by thanking someone. Maybe it's because I was raised in the South but it just doesn't seem right, y'all! 😉

LOL!! I know!! I was totally planning on writing thank you cards, I wasn't going to get all crazy and write one to every single person I interview with, but just one thank you card to the site. However, it may be ripped to shreds upon arrival. 😉

I think it more meant that it will not be seen as a positive, and might be perceived as a negative. But this made me smile, too.

You think? I can absolutely see how a thank you card will not influence your ratings positively, but negatively? Wow.

I'm so confused. Is the thinking behind this that by thanking someone you are telling them you are not as interested in their site? Or maybe it's like interviewing for a job. I can't think of anytime when I've interviewed for a job and then sent the interviewer/company a thank you. I'm a fan of common courtesy so this perplexes me.

Personalized rejection from the UC Davis CAARE center 🙁 booo

It perplexes me too. I have always sent a handwritten thank you card after job interviews, externship interviews, etc. For me, the purpose of sending a thank you card to internship sites is just simply saying thank you for taking the time to interview me and I'm interested in your site. I'm not planning on reiterating what I said in the interview, why I would be a good "fit" and all that, just a simple thank you for interviewing me.

Edit: But I do have an interview in NY, maybe I will pass on the thank you card to them. 😉

It came in around 945am I think. Hope you hear something good!

During one of my internship interviews, the TD and I discussed this and she said this is not like grad school interviews (i.e. Follow-up w/ a thank you). She said your opportunity to interact with the site is during interviews only. So we chuckled when I said "Okay, then I'm sincerely thanking you now and you will not receive a note from me in the mail." 🙂

Thank you for sharing this CheetahGirl! So do NOT send thank you cards to any site, correct?

Invite via personal email to Liberty Healthcare at the Rushville Treatment & Detention Facility - interviews 1/17, 1/20, 1/21

Mass e-mail rejection to the University of Pennsylvania CAPS received a few minutes ago.

I think it's a tough call. Outside of NY, I think a lot of places expect it. I think the idea was that all the NY sites would agree against thank yous, so they don't have to deal with 300 thank you notes or emails.

How many of you have the following disorder. I for sure do! Moderate!!

Waiting after Submitting Applications Disorder
A. An episode of intense anxiety and a sense of impending doom, increasing in intensity lasting a week or more with a return to previous levels of functioning following receiving notice of invite for an interview
B. During the episode, two (or more) of the following symptoms are experienced in increasing intensity:
1. Compulsively checking phone/email/Student Doctor Network forum
2. Decreased amount of sleep and often subject to nightmares regarding rejections.
3. Increase in consumption of carbohydrates and/or fast food.
4. Subjective sense of lack of competence.
5. Periods of fantasy in which the individual wishes he/she would get interview invites.
6. Other life responsibilities are completed while enduring extreme duress.
C. The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of life.
D. The disturbance is not better explained by another mental disorder, the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., medication or alcohol) or another medical condition.

Specify current severity:
The level of severity is based on the number of symptoms experienced. The degree to which symptoms are present may depend on the length of the time left for completion of academic responsibilities.
Mild: Two to three symptoms of Criteria B are present.
Moderate: Four to five symptoms of Criteria B are present.
Severe: All six symptoms of Criteria B are present.

Has anyone called McGuire VA to check on their app? Apparently that's what we're supposed to do when it's past the date they said we'd hear, but I don't want to be pushy.

What have people done so far?
I was raised to send thank you notes for just about everything, particularly job interviews. So last year I was prepared to send out thank you notes for interviews until I read on this forum that it really isn't done nor necessary. Sites just assume if you're going to bother going to the interview that you appreciate the interview, no thanks needed. When they rank you, they're not going to check off a check mark for having received a thank you. However, the site I'm currently at is a consortium with 4 sites. I interviewed at all 4 sites and one interviewer in particular made a point of giving me her business card and telling me that should I have any questions, please feel free to contact her. So in light of her going the extra mile to make me feel "wanted" I felt I should send her a thank you. I did and she actually responded back to my thank you telling me how much she enjoyed meeting me etc. I did not send thank you notes for the other interviews at that site or anywhere else I interviewed. So in my opinion, if someone shows particular interest in you, then I would send a personal thank you, otherwise I do not think that sites expect thank you's.

This is great advice. Thank you for posting!

Thanks guys (for all the replies on thank you notes)! I appreciate it 🙂
