2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question (I know this is not a place of judgement):
The Boston Children's brochure states that applicants should email the administrative person the "week of December 9th" to ask if they will be invited for an interview. I emailed her on Monday afternoon. It sounds like responses (both yeses and nos) have trickled back to others all week, but I haven't heard anything. Would it be appropriate for me to call today to ask directly? I'm going crazy here.

I actually applied there this year. Haven't heard back yet. It sounds like a really cool adventure, but at the same time i'm wondering if it would be too isolated. Perhaps those from Alaska can comment...

It is hard to determine what constitutes "too isolated". The Norton Sound is very remote. From my experience, the majority of people from the lower 48 struggle when they move to any Alaskan city, with the exception of Anchorage. With that said, some people thrive! You must consider your personality and whether it is a good fit (sorry guys, I know this phrase is not appreciated) for a remote area. Some factors to consider are the increased cost of living, the slow-to-warm-up tendencies of the locals (since many professionals only stay for 1-2 years, often times the locals don't choose to invest in a relationship with them), the weather, etc.

This link (http://www.elisetomlinson.com/faq-alaska.html) is to an individual's page. On it, she answers questions typically posed to Alaskans. You may find it helpful. Best of luck in what ever path you pursue!

Albany Medical College/Albany Psychology Internship Consortium invite via phone call at 8:30am Central Time; interviews week of Jan. 6-10, morning and afternoons.

I have been reading these posts all week in my anxious state. Your posts have been very helpful. Mass rejection (based on Dear applicant) at 8:45amEST from McLean. They stated that they had more than 180 applicants.

Has anyone heard from:

University of Texas at Austin Counseling Center
Village for Families and Children, Inc.
South Shore Mental Health
University of Houston- Clear Lake Counseling Center

ATL VA rejection. .. finally lol general in nature, didn't read it

"Dear applicant" rejection email from Catholic University of America UCC received at 10:20 am...was expecting this one

Has anyone heard from
Houston Independent School district

Still 7 more sites to hear from. Instead of acceptances or rejections, today I got to wake up to a message from Best Buy that someone attempted to fraudulently use my credit card. I'm glad they are on top of things!

OMG, I'm so sorry to hear this, but must say that the way you wrote this made me literally laugh out loud. Cheers to being on top of things ;-)

Still waiting on six, plus four probable rejections since I've seen here they've sent out interviews.
But hey, I went from one of the only people at my school with zero interviews to two interviews. Made me have slightly less of a heart attack.

Did anyone hear from Hartford Hospital/IOL for the CBT track?

I'm waiting on 5. Rejections should come with a consolation prize but apparently they do not send spa giftcards in those pesky attachments. I have been treating myself pretty wellat the end of my LAST EVER final exams week -- The West Wing reruns, belgian chocolate gelato, fancy macaroons, and live music. What are you all doing to be kind to yourselves?

Still waiting on 12. Hurry up and tell us already!!
Yikes, that's rough. Best of luck! Waiting on 6 over here (1 of which is a likely rejection). I've been trying to check the APPIC directory to see their notification dates but I keep getting a 404 file not found error. Anyone else having this issue?

I think finding a way to practice self-care during this time is so very important - thanks for your post 🙂 now to find some gelato and macaroons...

Personalized invite from Travis County. Interviews on January 9th, 10th, 16th, and 17th with tours at 9:00 or 1:00 each interview day.
Personalized rejection from Lewisville ISD. 🙁

I'm eating my feelings. They're delicious.

As of now, I have five interviews and three rejections. I am still waiting on eight sites to respond. Is anyone aware of statistics on what is considered a "good" ratio of interviews to rejections?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I've been indulging in many of the same things - West Wing and other shows (I found my sudden obsession with murder mysteries very disturbing until I realized it was all about them figuring things out and having clarity at the end!), a seriously unhealthy spike in ice cream and chocolate intake, and lots and lots of cooking. Plus cuddling with my husband and kids. That helps a lot. 🙂

Has anyone received news from UCSF Children and Adolescent Services (CAS)?

I have also been doing West Wing reruns. Weird that it is so common with us

I applied to their multicultural clinical training program and also have not heard a word. The APPIC site says they'll inform on the 16th, which is fine -- except my travel is already booked pretty much back-to-back and I'm coming from the east coast. I really like their program but might not be able to get there if they do decide to interview me, which would be a bummer....

It is not about the ratio of interviews to rejections (because number of apps submitted will effect this and that is skewed by privilege to spend on them, necessity due to geographical restrictions, etc.) Students sometimes like to perversely compare these but it is not a useful statistic for mental health purposes.... There are Match Statistics for several years on the APPIC site that make it clear that the likelihood of matching is optimal if you have 4 or 5 sites to rank (but look at the stats for yourself). People do match with only 1 or 2 sites to rank. Your odds with 5 interviews are solid and the factors affecting it beyond that (geographic concentration?) are not under your personal control so practice radical acceptance and eat chocolate.

Generic email interview invite from University at Buffalo's Counseling Services received this morning (12/13). Only phone interviews offered, with instructions to call and schedule beginning Tuesday, December 17.

I'm up to 6 interviews and waiting to hear back from four sites! Wishing everyone a "lucky" Friday the 13th 🙂

I looked at the Internship Interview Thread from SDN last year and it says that the Multicultural Clinical Training Program (CAS) did phone/Skyp interviews... I am not sure if this is true for this year, though. Here's hoping🙂

Gildner called earlier this week to offer an interview. They may be still going down the list. They had a lot of interview date options from the 6th through the 28th

I agree with all of this, particularly that the ratio has no predictive validity of match (imagine someone applying to 2 sites, getting 2 interviews for a perfect ratio, but they still wouldn't have a comfortable probability of match based on stats)... My one additional thought is that the ratio can be helpful as a loose guide for expected interviews to come. So if you a 5:3 ratio for your first 8, probabilities suggest that that you won't go 0:8 for the final ones. Keep in mind that this is a concept based in logic, and we are working with small sample sizes and a highly illogical process.

I am in absolute shock of the very best kind. Just spoke with a lovely admin at Columbia/NY Presbyterian, who set me up with 3 half hour interviews for my second round there. Really wasn't expecting this, plus it brings me to my goal for # of interviews for the season. Definitely doing a happy dance right now!

This morning at 8 am MST, received a personalized email invite to South Shore Mental Health Center outside Boston!

Still waiting on Saint John's CFDC, Citrus Health and Wright State. Anyone receive an invite from Saint John's yet?! That is the one I'm really holding out hope for at this point 🙂:xf:

Good luck today everyone!!!:highfive:
