2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

Haha thanks! i"m not sure how many alternates one would possibly have… maybe 10? who knows!

I did get another interview today, at University of TN for both the General and St. Jude's tracks, but even though I called back right away, the date I could come on was already booked! They were like sorry you have to come on the 7th, and I'm already supposed to be in Long Beach, CA the next day… there is no possible way for me to get there in time! So I am kind of freaking out because I don't know what to do now! I feel like it will look bad if I request to change my Guidance Center interview on the 8th, and that might not even really be possible anyway… Any suggestions??

Congrats on the invite! 🙂 Long Beach = Guidance Center I am guessing? I don't think it would be bad to ask the one on the 8th if you could reschedule. You could just say something like, "I have a scheduling conflict with a site that only has availability on the 7th, making it extremely difficult to get to you by the 8th, do you have any alternate days I could come?" I think that training directors understand that our schedules get full really fast, because a lot of sites offer interviews on the same days, and won't take it as an insult if you ask to reschedule. That is what I have heard anyway. Fortunately, I have not had this problem yet, but it looks like I might have a conflict depending on how the sites I am waiting to hear from pan out. And I plan on just emailing whichever sites I need to if that happens. Good luck!

Generic rejection from Black Hills VA, oh well! Still waiting to hear from 5 sites!

Totally agree, just want to know the deal at this point, good or bad.

Re Mailman, the invites that went out- what track? Those dates aren't what I have written in my excel doc from the brochure re open houses... of course they could have changed but I'm wondering if they do different tracks on different days, which might be associated with who was or wasn't contacted yet.... and that's my very stretched logic for remaining hopeful... wow writing/language is very difficult right now.

In the Mailman invite they did state that those were the only two dates they were holding an open house. Also stated that they usually hold three, but this year due to scheduling they are only holding two. They haven't sent out rejections yet though so crossing fingers!

Lol. I just received a rejection email that is almost exactly the same (with the exception of a few changed words) as one I received from another site a week ago, including the same list of "common reasons that applicants are not granted interviews." Is there a template for these...or did someone "borrow" another program's rejection letter? ;-)

Oh no!

That is so annoying. We've been warned over and over again to tailor every cover letter meticulously while sites can't even take ten minutes to come up with their own rejection letter? I am speechless.

I'm really annoyed bc Child & Adolescent in Canton was supposed to be one of my "safety" sites (whatever that means anymore anyway!), and then today they emailed me and said I was an interview "alternate." When I asked what that means, they said that if anyone decides to cancel at ANY TIME, I would need to make myself available for whatever time is open! That just seems really ridiculous considering a) the cost b) the inconvenience c) I live in Denver, CO so it's not like it's exactly next door! I definitely don't feel that wanted right now, but at the same time, I still only have 3 interviews (well I guess 3.5 now?!), so I guess if it does come open, sadly I will probably take it. *Sigh!*

I got the same thing today saying that I was an alternate and I had emailed and asked if they knew what date they would notify people and they just said until the 21st. I live closer so I mean it's not as inconvenient for me as it is for you, but it's still super annoying. I also have three (3.5) interviews, but i just wonder how many people are actually going to not go to the interview. Even though it's better than a rejection, I don't know about you, but it still feels anxiety provoking with this site

It would really behoove sites to more transparent about this type of stuff, IMO.

On an unrelated note, I won't get my comp results back for about six weeks (part 2 is in early January, and they're grading them together)--I figured you all could empathize with the anxiety of waiting. 😉

Good luck!!! I remember waiting for comps results and it was one of the more anxiety-provoking experiences in my grad career. You'll rock it!

I know that Applewood called people for invites last week, but is there anyone who received an invite recently or a rejection? I haven't heard either way, so I was just curious if people were still waiting on them.

It's 5:09pm (EST) now, and it's apparently past the business hours of a normal work day. I cannot believe that McLean (which promised to notify by 12/9) has still not gotten back to some of us. This is awesome!!!

Have you heard back yet?

I live in the Northeast, and I figured that some sites are more likely to take some of their "very own" than others. For instance, at a major VA hospital where I am currently externing, 3 out of 6 of the interns come from the same school and the other 3 are all from the same metropolitan area. It's hard not to think that there are some major geographical biases...

I am originally from the northeast as well, but went to school out west, and I agree with you, a lot of the larger sites (hospitals and VA's pick their own). I was so disheartened when I looked at one site that I was really interested in and felt would b a great fit and saw that all of their interns for the past ten years were all from schools in the same state. Doesn't feel so much like a national matching process as there are definite geographical biases.

Yippee!! Personalized invite to Northern Arizona VA. Interview dates 1/24 or 1/31.

Followed 5 min later by personalized rejection from So Oregon VA (White City). But whatever, so excited about Northern AZ!!

Today people have heard both invites and rejections to Indiana U. CAPS and I didn't get notified either way. Frustrating.

For those who are still waiting to hear from McLean - the DCT said they are having some logistic challenges hence the delay in notifying applicants. He said that all invitations will be completed by tomorrow.

🙂 Wyoming State Hospital, interview invite, personalized----phone (1/8 or 1/9) or in-person (1/23 or 1/28). To schedule must contact by email or phone.

We should run these letters through TurnItIn.com for plagiarism. Maybe some of these programs would fail. 😉

Good to know, thanks! Though it is very vague... did you get the sense that there is still some chance that some people will still get interviews? Or did you get this sense it was like by tomorrow we will officially send out our rejections? (Yes, I know this is a crazy person question, but I'm just embracing my craziness right now)

Did anyone else get that weird email from the Cleveland VA that says you're still being considered but will not be offered an interview, that was then recalled? What do you make of the recall?
I received that email this afternoon - still under consideration, not being offered an onsite interview, but they will contact if they want a telephone interview. I guess there really *is* a B-list.
