Dear Internship Site:

I have completed my review of your rejection. Unfortunately, I am not able to accept your rejection of my application at this time. This year, I received a higher volume of rejections than anticipated, many from sites with prestigious qualifications. As such, I am not able to accept all rejections. I will be attending an interview with your site on January 6, 2014 at 2:00PM. I appreciate the time you took in putting together my rejection and am sorry I will not be able to accept it.

Sincerely,
XXXXXXX

Has anyone heard back from Univ. of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio yet? I believe they did rolling invites last year and I know the notification day this year is 12/27 but I was just curious 🙂

I'm literally dying of laughter...that was so creative. I hope you get your top pick!

Anyone else applied at U of Houston Clear Lake Counseling Center? Their notification date is 12/19 but I wonder if anyone here has heard from them or still waiting....

I did, but I haven't heard anything yet either…

I emailed the TD for an unrelated issue and he said that they would be sending invites after the application deadline, which was pushed back to Dec. 20.

If you don't mind could you share if Mount Sinai Adolescent was mass or personalized? They're the last site I'm waiting on (other than one with a 12/30 date).

Dear applicant letter that was from and cc'd to the internship director...so, hard to say

How do you guys plan to answer the following question if asked in an interview? 😉

Discuss a challenging therapy case you treated. What would you have done differently?

I had a particularly challenging and rewarding therapy case that I've been thinking about how to describe in case a question such as this comes up. The "challenge" was lack of honest communication, an accurate case conceptualization (although difficult to use as she wasn't completely forthcoming and new information came out over time, and extreme transference/lack of attendance)…It is completely understanding for a client to withhold information, especially with a new therapist, however, this lack of honest communication made therapy challenging. The good news is that I learned a TON from this case and that she ended up opening up eventually, although she was eventually discharged due to policy regarding attendance..but she was transferred to another therapist in the clinic.

Also, another one of my first EVER therapy cases was couples counseling…talk about a REWARDING…CHALLENGE!

The challenging cases are always fun.

Quick q about asking questions on internships. I'm very much a person who needs to write things down (short-term memory is not the greatest). Does it look odd to take notes during interviews or to refer to my notes during asking questions? If it's anything like grad school interviews, someone may say something during the day that makes me think of another question later....
I plan to bring a folio with extra copies of my CV and with paper to take notes on if anything comes up during the tours, welcome sessions, etc.

I've thought of this myself. I agree with AttachmentGal on taking notes on tours or perhaps during lunch with interns (after telling them "Oh that's a great point and reminds me of a question I'd love to ask later…" But during the interview, I would not write notes… however I do not see a problem taking notes during a tour (although I would recommend taking notes during a break if possible).

Always blame the client ;-)

How did you answer that question? I feel like I 1) must be super fortunate because I can't recall too many "conflicts" per se with coworkers or supervisors and 2) I'm afraid if I did pick something, I'd be worried it wouldn't show my best qualities/put me in the best "light" (not that I have raging interpersonal problems, but I have worked with a few folks who were "a few crayons short of a full box" if you get my drift! How I dealt with them might be a bit different than how I might handle things in an AMC).
I plan to talk about a recent issue with my supervisor where I feel like things were going along with the status quo, and I had to talk to her to get her to meet my training needs so that I was continuing to learn and grow through the practicum.

When I interviewed last year, I discussed a case that involved an adolescent gang member. As for what I would have done differently, I forgot what I said.

Anyway, they were really impressed by the fact that I had treated a gang member (quite a few over my practicum "career.") I figured there were not to many students at the interview who have treated gang members. Try to choose a very unique case that will make you stand out. Shows them you can work with really difficult clients. That you are up for the challenge. You are a therapy beast!!!!

Before you go to bed tonight, I want you to say to yourself, "I am a therapy beast. Client's symptoms tremble in the presence of my therapeutic skills." Say this 15 times while eating an orange. It will help. Trust me.

This is what I've done. Notes during informal meetings with interns but not during interviews per se. But I have a pad in a folder with my CV and info on the site (I usually bring the brochure to review en route), and on my way home I take notes on everything that I remember. I think you'll remember the important stuff, though, because it's the stuff that matters to you!

How do you guys plan to answer the following question if asked in an interview? 😉

Discuss a challenging therapy case you treated. What would you have done differently?

I think I'm going to talk about a really challenging kid I'm treating at my child sites (super-aggressive, school tried to hospitalize her twice, physically attacked me once, threatened to do so (and to leave treatment) multiple times, seemed to have seizure-like behaviors whenever she was anxious about losing her relationship with me) and talk about a specific small thing I'd have done differently, since in the broad strokes of the treatment, I think I did as well as I could. I'm not sure what I *could* have done differently with her.

For adult sites, I have a guy who came in with all kinds of personality pathology, and while overall the treatment has been very effective, I'm going to talk about how I initially used humor to respond to his passive-aggressive and hypersexual comments, and that in future I would think a stronger "hard-line" response earlier might be more effective.

I'm lucky (I guess) that many of my patients have been really challenging in different ways, but for this question I tend to gravitate towards the literally challenging, rather than just difficult to know what to do, you know?

Regarding prepping for talking about cases...I've done one interview so far and I think one thing I would add what has already been said above is that it's important to tailor your case presentation to the interview format. The site I was at did multiple 30 minute interviews. In addition to feeling like speed dating, I found myself working hard to convey the most important details about each case in the shortest amount of time. (I think before that interview I had been taking 15 minutes when practicing each case). Moving forward, I think it's a good idea to practice both a long and a short version of each case. Asking more information about the interview format ahead of time also seems like a good idea. Hope that helps!

1:30 am rejection from Oregon State University CAPS. That felt nice and didn't at all keep me laying awake in an anxious haze until 5am...

Edit: Mass unpersonalized e-mail.

Couple thoughts about issues raised:

I see no problem with taking minimal notes during interviews, especially of specific information that would be hard to remember otherwise.

Regarding tailoring questions for sites, I recommend being able to answer every question in two minutes or less. You can always expound more if needed or desired. You do not want to ramble on and on.

+1 and with that I have officially heard back from all my sites! Good luck to the people that are still waiting to hear back (come on sites, get it together)!

Not yet!

Big favor! I have an interview at the Dallas VA neuro track for Jan 6, 2014, need to reschedule for Jan. 16, 2014. Anyone out there who could possibly switch??? :shy:
That would be super awesome, but I know people are all buying tickets already. Got an interview last minute for Jan. 6 only in my hometown, but looks like I won't be able to go to that 🙁

"Dear applicant" mass rejection email from the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital received this am...🙁

Mass email rejection from the Colorado Department of Corrections received today.

Got a personal phone call interview offer for Purdue University CAPS. Should expect an email to set up an interview.

waiting on Jesse Brown today - I think quite a few others on the board are, too. good luck today, all!
Ditto mosquito. This has been a VERY long wait. My biggest question (not about JB specifically, but other programs too): Isn't it in the sites best interest to send out invites ASAP? I would be concerned that many competitive applicants would already be booked.

my thoughts exactly!! I think it will be a stretch for me to attend another interview if I am invited (not a terrible problem to have), but this was also a site I was fairly excited about. I'm hoping their interview dates will be flexible given that they're pretty late in the game. But then again a rejection might make this a moot issue 🙂

Based on previous years, this notification date seems pretty late (almost 2 weeks later than last year, I think).

Still waiting on UCSF Children and Adolescent Services (CAS)... Has anyone heard news from them?

Couldn't have said it better myself. I looked at their previous interview dates (I've had a lot of time to perseverate about this), and it appears that they offer 2 weeks of MF interviews. I wouldn't be surprised if this happened again 🙂 It's definitely a top contender. However, they have so few spots designated for the track to which I applied that I am not expecting great news

fingers crossed for both of us! :xf: if we both get lucky, maybe I'll see you there (and also at the bar to get a drink after the interview!) 😉

Still waiting on Mt. Sinai adolescent health. If I don't hear from them by the end of the day I think I'm gonna have to be the annoying girl & check in with them. Grr.

Emailed training director at Louis Stokes DVA and I was invited to interview for neuro track on 12/6 for the open house on 1/8, but there was a very common mistake with my email address so I did not receive it. I'm glad I asked!!

I'd rather not divulge the details here for this one. But I also feel like it's difficult to recall conflicts with coworkers and supervisors. I would do your best to have something ready to say if you get asked something like this, even if you might answer the question a little differently (maybe talking about a miscommunication or a differing opinion rather than a conflict, for example). I'd venture to say, though, that "gee, I can't think of any conflicts I've had," is not an acceptable answer!
