2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For our site it would not be a disadvantage at all. If anything, it is a nice bridge to evidence of your experience with diversity in one of its many forms. Would you want to work in a site that made judgments on your professionalism based on this anyway? Any reputable site that didn't already recognize the tradition would hopefully at least be inspired to ask so you could relay the narrative above. I'd say go and enjoy the event fully and trust it will be a positive feature if of any note at all.

Thank you - and no, I would certainly not want to work at such a site! My only concern was that Henna is not exclusively done within these traditions; any one of us could go and get Henna at any time. Many women do because it's so beautiful and elegant, not to mention temporary. But I agree that this could really only be a positive aspect of my presentation of myself, if not neutral.

I imagine it would make you stand out (in a good way), as well.

Funny you should ask...I'm Indian (big self-disclosure regarding my anonymity here) and I say wear that Mehndi (Hindi term for henna designs) with pride and enjoy it! It will show your multiculturalism (especially if you are not Indian). I have been on plenty of interviews, conferences, etc. with henna on my hands and it has never been an issue...in fact, it has always been a warm & friendly ice-breaker. I don't know what soul in the U.S. today who would think it was was unprofessional....send that soul my way and let me give him/her a little lesson on culture. Please go, support your best friend, and enjoy! You don't need to get big elaborate designs on both hands (like the bride), you can get nice ones just on the palm of one hand if you want to remain conservative. BTW: I nailed one of my most significant foot-in-door jobs with my wedding Mehndi all on my hands (& up my forearm) during the interview...it fads within a few weeks. And if it is REALLY DARK it's supposed to be good luck. :luck:

Wow, thank you so much for this! Between the guidance I have been getting from others and you reconnecting me with the significance of what I am doing with my friend on her special day, I am not worried anymore. =D

Anyone that got an interview at the Medical College of Georgia, did you receive travel information?
Yes, I received it within a few days after the invitation. I would suggest contacting the site if you have not received anything yet (especially if you have an interview pending soon).

Has anyone heard from UCLA counseling center? I don't remember seeing anything posted here for this site yet...

Group interviews??? Anybody have any experience or advice here? What goes on in a group interview? I didn't think my anxiety could get any higher...

Yes, I've done a few of them. Personally I think they are an interesting social experiment. The staff I've talked to who conduct them say that they look for students who "don't play well with others" and those who are easily steam rolled. Basically, be polite, conscientious, don't interrupt, and be assertive. They can actually be kind of nice because they give you a minute to breathe between questions (as they are usually done in an alternating format) and you can conversationally play off of each other. Best of luck!

Group interviews tend to be less about your response to a particular question and what you actually say, as they tend to focus more on your ability to collaborate and interact with the others in the group. Often times, people are highly competitive and interrupt one another--this is not good and not qualities an applicant wants to demonstrate for the facilitator/interviewer. If you find that you're being interrupted try to find a balance between not appearing overly frustrated/annoyed or overly apathetic. I would complement the interrupter on their comment and work from there.

In my experience with group interviews, more tends to be less. Don't say something just to say something. Make sure your response is meaningful and can contribute to the discussion. This allows the facilitator to know you're response style is insightful rather than impulsive, and that you're considerate of others.

Have fun with it... pretend you're on a talk show or something like that... try not to take it or the other applicants too seriously. If someone has a GREAT response don't get in your head be like "Ughh I wish I would of said something like that"--Instead say to that person, "Wow Bob! What a great thought..." This shows this facilitator you're not a cut throat psychotic applicant and that you're able to play well with others in the sand box.

But, these are just my opinions. 🙂 GOOD LUCK!!!

I just booked two interviews in a two day span of each other on the other side of the country. With 4 nights in a decent hotel, nonstop flights, and a rental car, just over 600$ booking a month in advance. I wish my good luck in saving $$ to everyone else as they book tix!

Hi...I thought of this too when I responded, but you'll have all the joy, colors and excitement of the wedding internalized by then, so you'll be able to convey the authenticity of your experiences with henna in its traditional form...not some hippie-chick "let's chill with a bottle of wine and henna it up, girlfriends!" experience (which is fine too, but maybe after Match Day). 😉

I'll stop now...:hijacked:

Still no word on 12 sites...(sigh).

Any tips on which site you used to get such a good deal? Assuming the Travelocities of the world but maybe there are better sites out there - willing to share on how you booked etc?

Thanks and best of luck on those interviews!!

You didn't ask me but thought I'd chime in because I've been comparing those different sites. For me, Priceline has had the best prices so far. Travelocity charges you extra if you get a flight only (without a hotel).

Thanks Cara for your "chime" in and any others for that matter!! All thoughts are helpful at this point. I realize so much depends on where we originate and destination but that is good to know. Lets hope weather doesn't become a huge factor for us - more stress …. but we will get through it ….

Same here, but 10 sites, is it ridiculous that I just asked my husband to send me a "test" email to make sure my email is working? Never mind, don't answer that, it IS ridiculous!! :nailbiting:

Honestly, I don't ever use the Kayak, priceline, expedia sites. I realize they have good bulk travel deals sometimes when you purchase a package, so its worth looking at if you have time. I actually booked everything directly through each hotel, airline, and car company. I think most business have gotten smart to the idea of expedia and travelocity etc. and typically offer the same or better deals on their independent sites. Plus, if you have an frequent traveler account with one of the companies, this adds to your points for an eventual free flight, free hotel stay, etc..

rejection Maimonides Medical Center-- mass email, stating they made every attempt to give all of the applications that were submitted their most careful attention

+1. I love that, like it makes it better. "We really looked carefully at your materials before deciding you weren't good enough"...um, thanks?

Has anyone heard back from Hines about an interview date confirmation

Official rejection from the Wash DC VA (general). Was expecting this one since calls went out last week....

Nope not yet! Hoping to soon though. I haven't heard from UCDavis yet either, even though someone on this forum has received an interview invite, and someone has gotten a rejection. No word from UCSanta Cruz or UCSB either :/

This is so true. Whenever I get invited to weddings or any events of different cultures, I get really excited because I always end up with such stories to tell! Like the time I ate jellyfish at a Chinese wedding thinking they were onions. Ay.

Well, actually, no - I don't think it's ridiculous. And, if it is, it's just as ridiculous as the choice four-letter words I just had for my Gmail Spam folder when I opened it up hopefully and it read, "Hooray, no spam here!"

I haven't heard from UCDavis yet either but I got an email from them in early nov that said they would release decisions on Dec 20th. You are talking about the UCC's right?

Rejection:

Geo Care / South Florida State Hospital
mass-email

Rejection via unpersonalized email for Yale Child Study Center just now. Booooo 🤔

Very brief and to the point mass email rejection from Yale Child Studies Center. Boo! :bang:

I'm sorry!! 🙁 What time did you receive it, if you don't mind me asking? I haven't heard anything from them.
It arrived about 5 minutes ago.
- I should mention that I applied to the site in error - meant to apply to GEOcare Treasure Coast.
I spoke with the TD a couple weeks back - she was understanding and kind enough to smooth things over with the TD at the other site for me.
So, she may have put me at the top of the "reject list," as I did not intend to submit an application.

Me too! Sitting here waiting for 12 sites! I think I'm acquiring phantom vibration syndrome from also checking my phone a billion times a day.

I've been cooking myself to insanity while waiting...my fridge is overflowing with cheesy comfort food goodness

I am also waiting for UC Davis CAARE center 🙁
