2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Personalized interview invite to University of Arizona College of Medicine - Severe Mental Illness Track received 12/10/2013. No dates specified, and the option of phone vs. in-person was given.

Non personalized rejection from the University of Akron Counseling Center via e-mail 12/10

Generic rejection email from the University of Akron CC. Received today around 12:15pm. I knew it was coming so it doesn't sting too bad! Makes more room for (hopefully) all of the invites I will receive!

Has anyone called McGuire VA to check on their app? Apparently that's what we're supposed to do when it's past the date they said we'd hear, but I don't want to be pushy.

I'm still waiting on them as well. Did you read somewhere in the manual to call and check on your app if they haven't contacted you? If so, where? And if you called, what was the response?

Received an interview invitation from the Coatesville VAMC General Track.
Interviews will be held in the morning and in the afternoon on the following days:
  • Tuesday, January 7
  • Friday, January 10
  • Wednesday, January 22
  • Thursday, January 23, MORNING ONLY
  • Monday, January 27, and
  • Friday, January 31

I guess it's just a general internship rule-of-thumb - not in the McGuire materials. Although the materials do give a contact number. I haven't called yet, but I might.

This was an email from Greg Keilan on the intern network listserv:

APPIC INTERN-NETWORK

Hi Jessi,

I've always had, at best, mixed feelings about that Student Doctor thread, primarily because it tends to induce a ton of anxiety and false assumptions. You should absolutely not make any assumptions about your status with a site until you've heard directly from that site. Can't tell you how many times I've heard from applicants about the assumptions that they've made that have turned out to be wrong.

My other issue with that SD thread is that, looking through it, it can make you feel like most sites have already sent out notifications. In fact, the sites listed there are not even close to a majority of the sites that are participating in the APPIC Match. So, before everyone on this list has a heart attack because they haven't heard much yet, let me state categorically that it is VERY EARLY FOR ANYONE TO BE HEARING BACK ON THEIR APPLICATIONS OR GETTING OFFERS FOR INTERVIEWS! Yes, some have already sent offers, but some application deadlines haven't even passed yet, much less have many sites had the opportunity to review materials and contact applicants to set up interviews.

So, if you haven't received any notification yet, or if you've heard only from a small number of sites, all that means is that you are one of 4,000 other applicants who also have not yet received any communication from sites and who feel like they are the only one in North America who hasn't heard anything.

Remember that each site that participates in the APPIC Match is required to list in their Directory information (and/or on their web site or other public materials) the date by which they have committed to notifying every applicant as to whether or not they are being interviewed. The purpose of that requirement is so you can know what to expect and when to expect it. Those are the dates that you should attend to, and you should not count on hearing anything prior to that date. APPIC recommends, but does NOT require, a December 15notification date, which some sites use and others don't. Check the APPIC Directory Online to be sure.

If you want to make yourself really anxious for no good reason, you can: (a) wonder how each site notifies applicants (alphabetically? by date the application was received? by astrological sign?, etc.) and how you will fit in that process, (b) start worrying two weeks before the "interview notification date" in the Directory about why you haven't heard anything and then assume it must be bad news, and (c) assume that if a classmate or someone on the SD thread hears from a site before you do, it means you're toast. All of these are tried and true methods of generating tons of anxiety while waiting to hear from sites.

Seriously, go by the dates in the Directory, and assume you'll hear at 11:59pm on those dates and not a moment earlier. Will some notify you days or even weeks earlier? Yes, and you can have that be a pleasant surprise, but many won't. One year, I sent out my notifications the evening of my interview notification date, and I was surprised how many applicants told me that they had assumed they weren't getting an interview because they hadn't heard anything from me (even though my notification date had not yet passed).

In the relatively infrequent event that you don't hear from a site by the end of that "interview notification date," you should call or e-mail the site the next morning to inquire about your status.

Generic rejection email from Houston VA (MEDVAMC) neuro track, received just now (12/10)

Hi All,
I am sending this message on behalf of a friend: I have a huge favor of those who have an interview at the HINES VA on January 13th or 14th. Would anyone be willing to change their dates to January 9th (or possibly the 6th or 10th)? I've run into some issues with travel and would love the opportunity to interview here in person. I would also pay for your hotel for couple nights since I know this is a lot to ask. Please, if you can, I would be very, very appreciative!!

It says on their brochure "If there are questions about the internship program or if you need to check the status of your application, please call the psychology office at (804) 675-5000, extension 5106, and indicate that you wish to speak with the Director of Training about the internship program."
I called and didn't get a response. I was too nervous to leave a message, but I probably will gather the courage and call back in a few.

Edit: Just gathered the courage. Left a message. ::nervous::

Very brave! I'm guessing they are just behind since no one on here has heard anything. Thanks for calling and definitely share if you hear something!

Three rejections today. Two were expected but it sill stings a bit since I received two yesterday. Today's rejections were University of PA cc, Columbia Medical, and Woodhull.

Just looked up their (Richmond/McGuire VA) notification policy. It says on pg2. of their internship manual "Applicants invited for interviews will be notified by e-mail in early December." It doesn't give an exact date, so it's likely they are still working. Kudos to the person who called to check in though. Any information is better than none.

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health? Their notification day is today, correct?

Recieved an interview invite for this site one week ago.

Same here 🙁

Has anyone heard from the American Lake VA??

I'm still waiting, and nobody has heard anything as far as I know. Last year they apparently sent invites on 12/5 and rejections on 12/10. But their notification date is not until 12/15.

I'm sorry if this is a repeat - but I wonder if anyone has heard from Cambridge Health Alliance... their earliest interviews are scheduled for the week of 12/16, which is barely a week from today. I CAN'T wait for the day that I can stop checking my emails incessantly. Poor coping I admit, but this whole process is just... inhumane and unnecessary for the most part. YIKES!

I'm so sorry to hear that. Sending support and vibes for good news...

I've heard nothing as well.

I had a question about the Tuscaloosa VA. I saw they sent out interviews on the updated list (thanks for that!), but they apparently sent out interviews before the actual extended deadline of 12/6? I apparently applied right when they sent out interviews and I'm so confused as to why they would send those out before the due date. I'm new to this so maybe it's somewhere on this site, I was searching for it, but must have missed it. What happened with that? Has anyone contacted them to check in? Should I or is that obnoxious?

Some sites that extend interviews on a rolling basis do offer interviews before their deadline. I would not worry; they may just be making decisions as they go. (I had an interview at a site that made the offer before their deadline; others I know received their offers after the deadline.)

Is anyone still waiting to hear back from Massachusetts Mental Health Center, General Track? Have people received invites from the general track?

Don't panic about Tuscaloosa! I received an invite from them yesterday. I think that first one you're referring to went out maybe a day after I submitted my application as well - it definitely made my heart stop when I saw it! They may simply be doing rolling invites in the order in which they received applications.

Thank you! It's nice to know that other people are hearing back now. Slightly less anxiety now. Slightly, haha.
