2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard any rejections or more news from University of Louisville SOM? I saw they called a while back, but haven't heard anything. Their notification date was the 6th.

Thanks!
I emailed the TD who responded stating that they are still processing applications and would send out notifications no later than the end of this week.

To add to the list of questions I saw on the main list that people have received interview invites for the neuro and general tracks of Missouri Health Sciences Consortium but I am curious has anyone heard anything from the VA or rehab track? Please let me know or PM if you have any info, thank you everyone I'm so thankful for my SDN family!

Has anyone received an invite (or rejection?) from HCMC in Minneapolis? I've heard back from all of my other sites with a Nov 1 deadline except this one. Would love to know!!

I got an invite to HCMC yesterday through what looked to be a mass email. However, my colleague also applied and hasn't heard either way.

YES!!! University of Maine Counseling Center interview invite! It was a personalized email with a personalized attachment letter! Interviews are via phone or skype: Jan 6 and Jan 7 and Jan 9 and Jan 10. So excited about this one!!!

Congrats. A friend of mine interned there and now works there and really loves it.

Congrats! Wow....I guess there is still hope for me too. I thought they were done.

Personalized rejection Boston Children's Hospital. This was in response to an email I sent on Monday asking about the status of my application.

Rejection from Sierra Nevada (Reno) VA via generalized email a few minutes ago. On the plus side, I didn't have any room in my schedule to go to their listed interview dates, so that's something. 🙂

Yes! Although for me it's the week of the 6th and the week of the 13th. Does it seem ridiculous to anyone else that sights think they can ask for a primary date and a back-up date, wait several days before responding to your request and then assume that those dates are still free? It's not like I can say to them... hey I'd like to interview on the 13th or the 14th, keep both open for me would you? Capitalizing on the power imbalance is starting to tick me off a bit.

I've had to tell a few sites that I really can't give them a backup date because they have only one date that works for me. So far, everyone has been really understanding. I think sites have to realize that at this point, many of the applicants have pretty crazy schedules!

Anyone hear from or knows anyone that heard from the following sites?

Children's Institute, Inc.
Institute for Multicultural Counseling and Education Services in Los Angeles
Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Med School
Northern AZ VA Health Care System
Riverbend
Oregon VA
Walla Walla Spokane
VA Puget Sound American Lake
Alaska Psychology Internship Consortium

Thanks! 🙂

Mass email - rejection kaiser permanent San diego

With the different time zones, it seems an email could come at any time, especially with the sites working around the clock on this stuff. I woke up to a rejection at 6:59am mountain time, but it was 9am on the east coast. Glad for your acceptance!
Sorry about the rejection,, but yea, time doesn't mean anything; could happen WHENEVER. Not helping those of us prone to hypervigilance...

Officially rejected from Duke CBT track via mass email. Knew that was coming!
ditto. This was my 10th rejection, and one of my top sites...womp womp.
in my endless devastation, I was hoping to get people's take on my personal situation. hopefully this post doesn't come off like i'm looking for a pity party, i thought that maybe you all could provide some insight on this process for me!

I applied to 15 medical center sites - not because I thought I was the best of the best or even the most competitive candidate but because I knew that "fit" was the most important component and those sites seemed to be the best fit for my background and training goals - getting training in inpatient and outpatient settings, and working with both groups and individuals, etc. As a note, I also applied to mostly generalist tracks, or CBT tracks since I thought I could get varied experiences there, and since my background (clinical or research) doesn't really support a more specialized track. There was also a number of reasons other sites wouldn't work for me - I didn't have any experience in UCCs so I didn't feel like I could apply to those sites and be a good candidate and I am a Canadian citizen so all the VA sites were out too. While I knew that the sites I was applying to were particularly competitive, I thought that my background and goals would be a decent fit for a couple of the sites (maybe 3 or 4 interviews) - i'm at a clinical science phd program, worked my butt off to get a good amount of hours (I thought this would be the most important component of my app) in varied sites (outpatient community clinic, VA, forensic). I do not, however, have any pubs currently (2 manuscripts ready to go with a perfectionist advisor who won't let them go out until they are flawless), 2 book chapters and a 10+ national conference presentations.

I would be SO appreciative to get any comments about your thoughts about my app. I feel so fortunate to have one interview, but with every additional rejection, I just keep wondering what I did wrong. Please feel free to send me a PM also 🙂
Thanks all!

how many invitations have you received? i was freaking out, having received somewhat fewer invitations than others in my program despite lots of pubs, and wondering what did i do wrong, but honestly it's not time for that yet. i'm trying to focus on preparing for the interviews i do have; i can think about "what did i do wrong" if and only if i don't match.

so far i have 10 official rejections, one invite, and 4 still to hear from (although 3 of those 4 have already sent out their invites)

that's pretty rough. i'm sorry you're going through that. you haven't identified any major mistake in one of your essays, have you? or maybe a letter writer who secretly hates you? stabs in the dark. i'm certainly no expert at this process.

good luck with the interview, with with the other sites.

Thank you so much for your feedback and kinds words!
I had a few people read over my essays and while they probably weren't as detailed as I wanted them to be (500 word limit fail), I don't think there would have been anything glaring. I'm pretty close with my letter writers so I'm hoping its not them although I guess I will never know! UGH! this whole thing is so awful!!

I'm still waiting on Children's Institute (in Miami) as well. Their notification date is 12/20, so hang in there!

So sorry to hear. 🙁 A lot of sites explicitly say that they don't provide feedback about why you weren't given an interview, but I wonder if there are a few you could maybe contact? Or talk to your adviser and/or DCT?

Also, some of my sites said in their rejection letters that they received a ton of apps and had to reject really qualified people. I know it's so hard not to take it personally, but this doesn't necessarily mean that your app wasn't strong.

Congrats to you but bummer for me, sounds like a rejection is on its way again 🙁
I haven't heard from Lovell either. I'm a hopeful that they are still sending out invites ......trying to stay positive. But I know all these rejections are tough

Ah! Congrats! I'm still waiting to hear from them but it looks like it's taking them a while to send out the invites since it's so personalized. Hopefully good news is coming my way soon!

Sending you lots of hugs and good wishes! This process really is terrible.

As far as applications go, I wonder if the low number of publications is part of the issue. I know from anecdotal evidence and a little bit of personal experience that those numbers can make a huge difference for the more academically-oriented sites, which a lot of medical centers are. Obviously, there's not much you can do about that this year, but if you do have to go through this process again, you may want to gently point this out to your advisor (or see if you can collaborate with anyone else to try a push out a few articles).

Thank you for the boost of optimism 🙂 I definitely think its tough to stay positive. I think it's important for all of us to keep in my that we all are very qualified, we wouldn't have come this far if we weren't.

Thanks for this Cara! I recently was looking at my old posts and I noticed that we were supportive of one another during grad interviews too - this site can be such a gift!
All my rejections have been really kind - but I still wish I knew a little more just to ease my own mind

Yes - that's my best guess and truthfully would make me feel so much better since this was one of the only issues out of my direct control.
A really close friend of mine applied last year - we're in the same lab, have very similar research interests, almost the same clinical experiences, but he had one pub at the time of applying and got 3 interviews at sites that I got rejections to. 🙁 🙁

Sounds like a difficult situation! There is a lot of information that comes into play and it sounds like you are still waiting to hear back regarding other interviews. However, my initial impressions are that your not having a publication as well as applying to mostly very competitive sites has put you at a disadvantage. Not having any publications--Especially for the more competitive medical centers--could be one significant limitation in your application. The modal number of publications is zero and most people who interview at the top medical centers will have at least one or two publications at a minimum. Another thing you could do (for the future...assuming you go through round 2 or, God forbid, next year) is to apply to a broader range of sites in terms of competitiveness. Add up the number of positions and the number of applicants at each site over the last three years. I've seen research (now about five years out of date, but still helpful) that sites that admit 2-4% of their applicants are ultra competitive, 4-6% competitive, above 6% is less competitive. Make sure you apply to a range of sites, not just sites in the 2-4% range. Hope that helps and good luck!
