Southern IL U rejected me last week. Also today got rejected by U St. Thomas in MN. They were very nice about it but I'm getting really anxious. 4 rejections, 2 assumed rejections (sites have interviewed others but not contacted me yet), 12 to go..........

I have a couple of publications (1 first author and 1 book chap), an F31, and another grant to fund my dissertation. I got 3 invites so far but to VAs only so maybe I am not as good of a fit as I thought I was for AMCs.. It's so hard to figure out what the problem is. But I did ask for feedback from UChicago and another site which provided me some brief feedback.....so it's worth a try.

I'll totally second what Cara said, to have all of that and still not get the interview - I just want to be on the inside so much to see how much each piece is worth (1st authored publication = 30 points, f31=50 points?) Its so FRUSTRATING!
 
I heard from a current intern at CHLA that the staff has submitted their reviews of applications but that's all he knows.

I applied very similarly to mostly AMCs based on fit and my career goals and have been really shocked by just how competitive it is. I have 9 publications (3 first author, with 3 more first author pubs under review), an F31, and about 2,500 clinical hours so I thought I would be fairly competitive, but have only had about a 50% hit rate for interviews. I'm definitely not complaining because I am happy with the interviews that I have gotten, but it's crazy how competitive it is! Also, there is someone in my program with (no joke) about 4,000 clinical hours (and otherwise a good vita, too) who has only gotten two interviews so far.

I also strongly suggest maybe emailing your top site or two to ask for feedback on your application. They don't have to give you the feedback, but many of them will. I asked one of the sites where I didn't get an interview for feedback and got some that was very helpful and I know a couple other people in my program have done the same. Also, as far as competitiveness, remember it varies considerably by track. For instance, University of Chicago may interview 60 or so applicant, but I know that the Eating Disorder track only interviews about 10 or less for that one slot.

I'm really sorry that this process has been such a struggle. All I can say is that it is a terrible, terrible process. I am sure you are a fabulous applicant; it's just the distinctions between the fabulous applicant who gets an interview and the one that does not are so fine. I think the best you can do right now is focus on preparing for the interview(s) you get (I also know a number of people who have matched with one or two interviews!) and maybe seek feedback so that you can know how to strengthen yourself or your search for (god forbid!) next year if you need to repeat the process or else (hopefully!) next year for applying to postdocs. Also a positive note: I have heard the postdoc process to be far more humane and less competitive.

WOW...I can't thank you enough for this feedback. I knew it was competitive but didn't think it was THAT competitive. I mean I wasn't even CLOSE to 2500 clinical hours or 9 pubs. I tried to get over 500 hours to be in the running, but even that was a struggle at my program where they don't push us to work hard on hours. I will definitely be seeking feedback from some of the sites and will post on here with what I learn so maybe we can avoid this for future applicants 🙂
Also, I want to thank everyone for the amazing outpouring of support - I have felt so alone in my rejections, even when feeling thankful for this community here, but this just means the world for me that so many people were willing to stop their day and try to help me! Thank you SDN!!

A person in the cohort above me matched last year with only one interview. He speculated afterwards that the sites he applied to were very competitive. You sound like a solid applicant. I would guess that there are just so many other solid applicants applying to the same sites as you. I hope you get good news from the sites you are waiting on! :cat:

Just got a voicemail invite from the TD at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (General Track). He said there were 3 dates to choose from, but the VM didn't actually say what the dates were... Btw, the VM came in at 7:30pm EST-- wasn't thinking I'd need to stick by my phone that late!

Mass invite to Hefner VAMC in Salisbury, NC. Interview dates January 6th, 8th, 9th, 13th, 15th, and 17th

Rejection from Central Regional Hospital, Butner, NC
Rejection from Cherokee Health Systems, Knoxville, TN

Has anyone recently heard from Salem VAMC or MUSC/Charleston VAMC Consortium?

Memphis VA is the only one I'm waiting to hear from! What makes them so special that they can make us wait?! Lol. If you mean the University of Maryland/VA Maryland Healthcare System, I got an invite from the VA (Health Psychology track) the week of Thanksgiving. Didn't apply to the other two!
