2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview rejection email from University of Texas HSC at San Antonio received at 10:30 pm (central). However, I'm a bit confused as the email stated "an interview is not required to match at our site, so it is still possible that we will rank some non-interview applicants this year." Did other people get this? Will sites typically inform applicants in this situation if they are still under consideration prior to rank day? Would it be appropriate to send an email in a few weeks to touch bases or am I reading too much into this and it was just a nice rejection? Thanks 🙂
I just got the same email. Not sure what to think about it, either.

Got this too. I think it wouldn't hurt to rank them. My understanding is that it does not cause a problem to rank more sites - we just will not match there unless they rank us.

This. It doesn't hurt to rank the site, and if they mentioned in the email that it's possible to match without having received an interview, I'd personally go ahead and put them on my list somewhere.

Got the email too. I'll be ranking them at the bottom of my list.

Thank you for the advice! They will also be at the bottom of my list.

Remember you can rank them wherever you want and it doesn't affect if you match. You'll match to your top site that has an open slot for you.

i'm also still waiting to hear from 3 sites. i didn't get as many requests as expected, and want to start preparing for phase 2.

i have some questions for those of you out there who received a lot of interview requests (let's say 10 or more). how many years of practicum did you have at the time of applications (or, roughly, how many intervention and assessment hours at the time of apps)? how many integrated reports have you written? how many publications, presentations, etc? how did you structure your cover letters?

i've asked for feedback from some of the sites who did not want to interview me, but have received pretty vague responses so far...i want to make sure i look competitive in the next round!

would really appreciate any advice from the superstars out there 🙂

Got the same.. I'll be ranking them last as well. Why not rank them?

Good luck to everyone with their interviews.

I am still waiting to hear from these 3 sites:
Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center
El Paso Psychology Internship Consortium
Gateway Foundation

I have my first interview on Jan 7th. I am actually looking forward to it. 🙂
I can't wait to get all these interviews out of the way.

Does anyone going to the Mailman open house on January 7th know what time we will be beginning and ending at? I emailed them to ask but have heard nothing :/ Thanks for any help!

Finally got a rejection from Kansas City medical center. Just one more site to hear from. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting on sites

Hi PsychologyIsAGamble, I think all OGJ VA requires is phone, so you are in luck! I got them this morning as well, and U of Texas last week. Still waiting on Canandaguia and this waiting game is a wrap!

Yeah, looks like phone is okay. Just waiting for confirmation on a date now. I also got uni of tex @ san antonio but needed to do a skype/phone with them too!
I have 1 site left to hear from. El Paso Consortium but I think they have 1/8 notification deadline

Best of luck with your interviews!!!

Completely agree with everything you have said here. I am wondering – how likely is it that would happen – you are ranked #5 at every site you interview at and therefore don't match?? Assuming all of these sites had 4 internship slots. And you have 10 + interviews.

To expand on my original post, it's highly unlikely that someone will get many interviews and not match. However, you are an N of 1, and even if .01% of people end up in that boat every year, you can still be in that .01%. As others have stated, in my hypothetical example in which you're ranked #5 by every site, it's improbable that every single person ranked 1-4 also listed that site highly enough to match ahead of you. I do believe that a few people each year simply are unlucky and end up not matching because of the way that the numbers play out; you can modify my example and just say "you can get 10 interviews, be ranked highly by each site, and still just miss the mark for matching at any one of those sites" and you see what I mean. My highly simplified hypothetical was just meant to illustrate my suggestion not to take any one of your sites for granted by turning down an interview.

If you have a lot of interviews, once the interview process if over, I don't think it's worth worrying about the incredibly tiny odds that you won't match. It's out of your control, anyway. And I'm one of those people who was in the opposite situation, where I received far fewer invites than expected, but matched to a highly competitive site, so I actually think that worrying about something that's out of your control isn't helpful regardless of your situation. But when you're still at the point where you do have control - when you're deciding whether to decline an interview - I would encourage people to attend whenever possible.

Is anybody else waiting for confirmation of phone interview date for Louis Stokes DVA?

Hi Everyone! So in an effort to cut down on costs, I am asking if anyone wants to split the cost of a hotel/motel in one of these two dates (I figured I just see if any of you are interviewing the same day/area as me!):

January 9th-10th: Rhinebeck, NY (Interviewing at Astor Services)
January 16th-17th: Stamford, CT (Interviewing at Child Guidance Center of Southern CT)

If any of you are up for it, let me know! 🙂

Generic invite from the Institute for Multicultural Counseling and Education Services. Anyone else hear from them?

Thanks for the reply! You're right, worrying about things that are out of my control is not helpful at all. I need to focus my energy on things that I do have control over – preparing for my interviews, for one! 🙂 And not turning down any interviews. I like what you said about not taking any sites for granted. While it will be expensive and exhausting to travel to all of my interviews, I just can't bring myself to turn any down.

Question:
I have been traveling (as many of you have) like crazy for the last few weeks. I had an interview the second week of December, and had planned to send a thank you card within a few days. However, with traveling for conferences/trying to get all my grading done/traveling for the holidays, I was just now able to buy all the cards. Given that it's not a requirement/expected to send a card at all, which would look worse: sending a thank you card now or not sending one at all? I'm not looking for comments/suggestions about sending thank you cards within a few days (as I plan to bring these new cards with me to pop in the mail while I'm on the interview circuit, so I don't run into this issue again). I'm just merely looking for feedback regarding whether or not I should even send one at this point. Thanks for any advice!

I have heard nothing from them. Getting quite concerned since I need to finalize my tickets to Texas!!

The TD indicated that the site would be reviewing applications this week. We should hear back from them shortly thereafter. I hope contact is initiated soon since my travel schedule is filling up and this seems like a good site. Best of luck to all!

My vote is to send it if you want-- People understand about delays around the holidays. 🙂 That said, it probably won't matter either way.

Awesome. Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the response and reassurance! Would you mind sharing how many interviews you had? It might make some of us feel better 🙂

I got 4 interviews out of (I believe) 16 applications. It was painful, and a HUGE blow to my ego, to be honest. Of my interviews, 3 of the 4 sites were very, very competitive, and the 4th was moderately competitive, so I was pretty nervous about my chances of matching. In the end, I matched to my top choice and wouldn't change the results for anything, but it was not an easy road!

....and it is now 2014.

This is the year in which we will begin our internships, apply for post-doc, and finish our dissertations if we have not already finished them. Best of wishes to all for a fun, rewarding, and educational 2104. :soexcited::=|:-):

Happy 2014 everyone!! Just wondering if anyone's heard from the John L. Gildner Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (JLG-RICA), or from Howard University's Counseling Center. I've only gotten 3 invites out of 10 applications so far, and I'm getting antsy as I still haven't heard from these 2.

Thanks!! And best of luck to all!!!

One of my friends received an interview invite to JLG-RICA. I do not know the exact date she received the invite however, just that it was in December sometime. Good luck!! 🙂

Which site is this referring to again?

That's what I thought. It's the only one I haven't heard from. Fingers crossed we hear soon!

Anyone heard from WVU School of Medicine in Charleston? I believe there notification date was today.

I got a reject invite from JLG-RICA a couple of weeks ago. Howard is supposedly still reviewing as of last Tuesday (I emailed the TD and she said it would be delayed due to illness on someone's part), but I haven't heard either, and my TD gave permission to check again tomorrow if I'm still coming up short.

Has anyone who is interviewing at McLean had any luck getting in touch with the bed and breakfast that they recommended? I've tried calling several times and haven't heard back from them :/ If anyone has any suggestions on other places to stay that are easily accessible to McLean, I would really appreciate it!

No luck. Left a voicemail (with generic prompt that wasn't returned) and email bounced. I found a hotel that should be a short drive away and plan on taking a cab. There are some options in Waltham and Cambridge that didn't look too far, but I don't know Boston well enough to know if I picked a good location. 😵

Hey everyone!
I am currently in Boston and am fearing the worst regarding the commute into BCH tomorrow...I am about 3 miles out. Did any smarties book a hotel within walking distance of the hospital? Would you mind possibly bunking up? PM if you would like yo make some extra $$ this internship season!
