As the year is closing, we have some data about the 2014 MD/PhD cycle. We have about the same number of MD/PhD applicants in 2014 as in 2012 and 2013, around ~1810-60 applicants. In 2012 and 2013, we had about 635 and 618 MD/PhD matriculants, respectively. In 2012, as per table 32, there were 838 accepted applicants but only 599 (table 32) or 635 (table 33) matriculated students. At the closing of 2013, we already have almost 270 acceptances for 2014. Given similar number of applicants for this cycle as compared to prior cycles, the data suggests that ~1/3 of the eventual accepted applicants (perhaps for the most competitive tier) for the 2014 class has already received an MD/PhD acceptance.

Thanks Fencer. Does this mean that there will be more IIs from the md/phd programs? Then I'm hopeful. Also, I think some of these 1/3 applicants have multiple acceptances.

Fencer, do you think the Adcom will speed up the process in Spring? I was under the impression that most of the MD/PHD programs have a very few interview dates left.
With your comments, it doesn't look like that.
 
As shown in the MD/PhD Interview Calendar (see: https://www.google.com/calendar/emb...roup.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York ). There are quite a few interview dates left until the end of February. Having said that, the point that I was making was that already 1/3 of the eventual 2014 MD/PhD acceptees have received at least one MD/PhD acceptance, and a significant number are here. Keep in mind that SDN posters are likely to get their application early and have been interviewed quite broadly. As the list shows, many of them have multiple acceptances.

As per AMCAS rules, programs must offer a number of acceptances to be at least as many entering slots as they have by March 15. The last batch of offers happens then. Subsequent to that is the domino effect when somebody with multiple top 5 offers starts dropping acceptances. In our case, the last 2013 acceptance that I offered was on May 17. For the most part, acceptances trickle down between March 15 and May 15.

As someone who has read all 6, you will be sad when it ends. It is a truly epic series, and I hope sometime in my life they make a 21st century movie with Avatar-like production. Easily my favorite books.

As of yesterday, there were a little over 330 accepted applicants to MD/PhD programs (many with multiple acceptances). As in prior years, about 760 individuals out of the almost 1900 applicants receive acceptances, indicating that at least 44% of the individuals with eventual acceptance offers for 2014 have been chosen (and reported). However, the national class of MD/PhD students enrolling in 2014 will probably be between 615 and 640 because of deferrals or withdrawals (prior to matriculation) from MD/PhD programs, perhaps to pursue MD training. Some of those late withdrawals have a domino effect allowing MD/PhD acceptances as late as early June.

The 2013 AAMC stats were just released at 609 first-year MD/PhD students but they were reported inaccurately in several categories for several institutions. For example, no first-year MD/PhD students were reported from Baylor MSTP in the AAMC table 33 but BCM's website indicates 9 first-year students. My program numbers were also reported wrongly. One potential problem with the data from Texas Schools is that the MD/PhD programs are in AMCAS and they merge the database with TMDSAS data to incorporate all of the MD acceptances for all Texas programs except BCM, who doesn't participate in TMDSAS.

Could you please explain what you mean by the 50%? What group of individuals? Those who on SDN?

You stated "about 720 individuals out of almost 1900". Where do those number come from?
 
Total number of applicants and matriculants - 1,937 applicants (bottom of table 33 in 2013) - matriculants were reported as 609 but Baylor (BCM) was reported as 0 despite a class of 9 (see BCM's website). There are other mistakes on that table). Table 32 for 2012 (2013 not available as of yet) shows some historical numbers for MD/PhD applicants, acceptees, and matriculants. For 2012, there were 1853 applicants, 838 were accepted, but only 599 matriculated (again, the number of matriculants is slighly higher). In 2013, the acceptance data (AMCAS reports) showed 1891 applicants, 763 acceptances and 608 matriculants (but see the table 33 AAMC/facts).

For the 2014 cycle, program directors have access to preliminary data. That is why I can tell you the the AAMC fact tables are slightly wrong. There are 385 MD/PhD acceptees as of yesterday. No, is not 50% of SDN.
