*** 2013-2014 MD/PhD Acceptances ***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thank you for your information.

This person had sent email to Stony Brook last week asking for status . The reply was that what I stated. The person was told that the interview went well. I feel that the person is on some sort of waiting list. The school is being less than honest.

I clicked on the link to BRIMR and didn't see anything except for a ranking of schools for money.

I interviewed at Stony Brook recently and it seemed that they still had a few more applicants to interview. They said that it would be about 4 weeks after the interview date that we would hear back.

Your friend is likely in the alternate list, perhaps at a spot where historically, your friend should be accepted by the end of the cycle. I posted the BRIMR data because you asked me what I thought about that particular program. I was just highlighting that out of all MSTPs, it has the lowest amount of NIH funding for their SOM (School of Medicine) that any other (someone has to be last). I am certain that despite that, they must have areas of excellent scientific strength, otherwise, they wouldn't be MSTP. They might also have other institutes affiliated with them who draw NIH or other research funding. Obviously, they are in a great geographical situation. The list, however, shows that there are many large non-MSTP MD/PhD programs with greater amounts of NIH funding within SOM than several MSTPs. Look, for example, at Oregon, UC Davis or USC. Their research enterprises are considerably larger than Stony Brook. Again, the list is one aspect to consider. My own program gets an almost equal amount of DOD/VA funding than from NIH, and the NIH funding for the rest of the institution (not part of the SOM) is substantial. In the end, the question about ANY MD/PhD program is whether there is a strong collaborative community of about 10 PIs within a particular discipline and strong MD/PhD program leadership. The answer of best choice for you might be different than for your friend.

Regarding the numbers posted, please compare the categories to 2013. By the end of the 2013 cycle, there were 763 MD/PhD acceptances with 118 withdrawals after acceptance, 25 deferrals to later year, and 3 rescinded acceptances, leading to an effective class of 617 or so. Programs are supposed to extend all acceptances equal to their number of expected enrollment. Although the effective deadline is Monday, and programs may take up to 5 days to report into the system. I suspect that the effective class for 2014 will be smaller than 2012 or 2013 at around 600 first-year matriculants (due to less NIH funding & institutional discretionary budget), but I expect that eventually we will have ~730-740 total MD/PhD acceptances (with about 120 withdrawing into MD programs and 10+ deferring). The system shows no action or alternate status for at least one school for about 170 MD/PhD applicants. If you haven't been completely rejected, and particularly if you are wait listed, perhaps there is at least a 50% chance of still registering on day 1. There is a lot of movement between now and May 15. After May 15, it is a trickle with only few acceptances.

How many have been accepted at Stony Brook that you know of, besides reckoner?

@commserver
If it makes you feel any better, I interviewed at Stony Brook a couple of months back and it is unclear where I stand on the waitlist. I have talked to some friends who also applied there and it seems to me that they don't really reject anyone after interviews (unless you completely bombed it, which I doubt is many). They also seem to still be interviewing. Could be until early April when everyone starts to finalize their schools before anyone hears back from Stony Brook. They did state that they had an increase of 20-30% of applicants, but I think that is just because everyone became safer and applied to more rather than having more applicants in general according to the data that Fencer put up earlier.

Would the one school that hasn't submitted any info happen to be U. of Chicago? I haven't heard anything from them and don't know anyone who has, plus no one here has posted. I know they are completely finished with interviews, so it's kinda annoying to not get back to us.

If you haven't been rejected and it was a while since your interview, I'd say you were on their waitlist. Perhaps email them as ask them for a status. Otherwise, wait until April 30th (the date when everyone can only hold one acceptance)

That's what I figured. Just find it annoying and kinda unprofessional to not communicate that to us. I did ask the admin over email and she never responded. Oh well.

I've been accepted there. I believe they have accepted 16 individuals (for a class of 6-8 I think?). Their second revisit is in the first week of April, so perhaps waitlist movement will begin after that. Good luck!

According to the UChicago thread in the pre-allo forums, the MSTP already extended all of their initial acceptances. Currently there is no waitlist at the school, as UChicago doesn't put together a waitlist until May IIRC. If you haven't been rejected or accepted yet, it means you're "continued" which in practice is a waitlist, with the main difference being that you can still be outright rejected at any time.

Also, I don't know what it is about Pritzker, but for some reason SDNers just historically don't seem to get into that school very often. If you look back at past MD/PhD Acceptances threads you'll see that this wouldn't be the first year that no one from this forum reported an acceptance from UChicago. Personally I'm surprised that no one has reported an acceptance from that school yet; it seems like UChicago was one of the most common places for people on here to interview this cycle, and we've had plenty of folks get into Yale and Penn and other terrific schools, and yet no one's gotten into UChicago yet (or if they have they aren't saying anything).

If you don't mind me asking, how do you feel about Stony Brook compared to the other schools you were accepted into?

Um, I'm not going to say which other schools I have been accepted just yet. I'm a bit paranoid about giving too much identifying information on myself, since I don't want anything I say about any school to bite me later. Just in case any prowling adcoms recognize me...

Anyway, back on SBU. It's definitely a smaller program compared to other MSTPs (4-6 people per class, now expanding to 7-8). Their research facilities are the best out of the SUNYs (not saying much to be honest), but unfortunately for them, they are in New York. This means they have to compete with a bunch of massive research powerhouses in NYC and they get overshadowed by those giants. However, the biggest draw for me is Cold Spring Harbor. The researchers in CSHL do some pretty awesome work, and their PhD training program supposedly graduates most of their students in ~4 years, which is excellent news for an MD/PhD. The other good news is that you get to work in a lot of locales, my plan if I matriculate would be 2 years in SBU, 4 years in CSHL, 1.5 years in Nassau county (they send 40 MS3s to Winthrop hospital), 0.5 years doing away rotations. Their match list is very NYC-heavy, but I assume that is from student preference.

Compared to some other schools I am considering, they are in a somewhat dull location. That is my biggest fear; would I be bored to tears for 8 years? Their clinical facilities aren't exactly world-famous either, but I assume the training should be around average. In fact, if I had to choose one word to describe this school, that would be it. Average, in just about every way. There isn't much to brag about, but there isn't much to complain about either.

Just wanted to say that I understand Pritzker has already extended a few MSTP offers (anecdotal, sorry don't have anything to cite). I declined my offer of acceptance so hopefully that spot will go to someone who's still waiting!! 🙂 Really loved it there when I went. Their students and administration are phenomenal.

Thanks for the elaboration.

So, If we haven't heard anything at all by today we should assume we are on the waitlist?

A program administrator at a school I am waiting on suggested to me recently on the phone that decisions might not be made until after match day (March 21st - I think) because they were very busy with that. Is that possible given the AMCAS deadlines?

It would be interesting to know... I haven't heard back post-interview from two places since October and December.

I think it may be worth it to just contact PDs or administrators from programs in order to find out what your status is. I did this yesterday and got a pretty quick answer. If you're waitlisted, they may tell you where you are on the list/your chances of getting of. Can't hurt to ask

Sounds like BS to me. Programs are required to make enough at least as many offers as they have available positions by March 15. A program with 10 postions has to make at least 10 offers; most programs choose to make more offers than available positions, knowing that some offers will be declined. The Match is not a valid excuse (it is not like it is an unexpected event). My guess is that the school has made an initial round of acceptances (probably equivalent to the number of positions), and now that they can see the other offers that the people they've accepted hold, they may decide to make additional offers based on their projected yield. No shame in that, but they really should not imply that they have not made decisions.

Agree... However, the joint acceptance and the alternate reports would not be available until April 1st. At the present time, we are only able to see joint acceptances for those who we have extended an acceptance.

Can anybody speak about the odds of getting in off the waitlist for an MD/PhD program versus an MD-only program? My understanding is that an average MD program over-accepts people, and then once a certain amount of people deny their acceptances, the waitlist starts to move. Is that the same for MD/PhD programs? Basically, I am sitting on waitlists for both and am trying to gauge my odds.
Bonus points if you can speak about the relative odds of getting into an MD program if you default into the pool after being waitlisted for an MD/PhD.

Has anyone who's had their MD PHD application to BU "deferred" to March heard anything yet?

You should have heard back today. Apparently, BU made a lot more offers than they have spots for the first round (I'm guessing they are hoping they will get NIH funding this year). Anyways, from what I hear the barely gave out any acceptance if any the second round. So mostly waitlist this time around.

From asking around during my interviews and ppl who got in before me, I have not heard of anyone who got into an MD/phD program through a waitlist. I did hear from some administrators that if there are spots that don't get fill, they will just accept more students next year instead of accepting people off the waitlist for the MD/phD programs

I don't think that's true. In fact, Einstein made a point of saying that at least half their class was originally placed on the waitlist before being accepted. I met people at other schools also that were accepted as late as May from the waitlist

Einstein is actually notorious for this. I think they get a lot of apps from people who just want to be in NYC and offer them spots but then those folks wind up getting Tri-I or Columbia spots and they bail on Einstein.

Posting a bit late, but UCSD!

It's probably been generally explained and/or mentioned in some way, but I'm wondering if anyone has any insight/opinion on what the waitlist movement is looking like right now and/or what it will look like after April 30 for others on here? Obrigado!

The final revisits are this weekend; some of the big programs (UCSF, WashU, Penn, Michigan, etc) are in this group, so students may be delaying their decision until they have had a chance to do the final revisit. My program has commitments from students to fill half the class. Looking at those who have yet to decide, we may be able to fill the program without making additional offers. I have seen a handful of new offers reported by the AAMC over the past two weeks, but nothing major. The ice floe will break up beginning next Monday or Tuesday. Last year on April 22, half of the people we made offers to had not decided; that proportion dropped to one-eighth on April 28th. We ultimately pulled one student off the waitlist on May 1. How much wait list activity will take place this year is anybody's guess. The NIH told MSTPs that there would be no administrative cuts in 2014, so programs do not have to worry about a late May surprise in their grant award.

Out of 1831 MD/PhD applicants, we are now at 590 applicants receiving MD/PhD offers and 1040 rejections. Please notice that there were ~60 less applicants than in 2013 cycle, however, due to funding climate, I only expect about 600 slots (down from 635 and 617 in 2012 and 2013, respectively).

Well as of yesterday, out of the 1831 MD/PhD applicants, we are now at 675 applicants receiving at least one MD/PhD offer. About 40 withdrew after acceptances and about 10 are deferring. There are about 110 applicants still in the gray-zone of no final action or alternate, while about 1040 applicants are no longer been considered (rejections or withdrawals prior to acceptances). By next Friday, I expect the last set of big changes with the domino effect as all applicants narrow to a single acceptance.

I noticed people have been getting in off waitlists in the past few days but haven't been posting... If you don't mind please post your acceptances; as one of the gray-zoneds I'd really like to see them!

As of last night, out of the 1831 MD/PhD applicants, 698 of them have received at least one MD/PhD offer. There are 75 withdrawals after acceptances (into MD only programs) and 10 deferrals, leaving a current expected class of 613 first-year students. The "gray-zone" (alternate, no final action) has shrunk but not by a lot. It was 110 a few weeks ago, and now is around 90s. It is interesting that some people (as compared to February) have been taken out of the rejection lists (currently at 1028 vs 1040 a few weeks ago). However, most of the new acceptances into MSTPs come out from students already accepted into other MD/PhD programs (the domino effect) who then backfill slots. Unfortunately, many of these smaller programs don't have as much administrative support and are slow AMCAS responders.

Could you speculate on the odds of a "gray-zoner" being accepted from this point forward? Historically, how long does it take for the domino effect to work things out?
As always, I appreciate your insight and stats!

I don't have the numbers you're looking for. I do think that now would be a good time to start thinking more seriously about your backup plan if you're not holding an acceptance. I don't think I was rejected outright anywhere post-interview, but being buried on the wait list is just as bad. Even if they tell you you're in good position, don't get your hopes up because it counts for nothing. (I'm still a little bitter, and that was a long time ago.) This will undoubtedly be another incredibly competitive year with a record number of qualified applicants and not enough space for all of them. Just like the 20+ years before it.

I'm sorry about your experience through the application process pithecanthropus. I hope that residual bitterness will go away when you become a great physician possibly research physician (assuming medical student status up to date). I'm not trying to give anyone false hope but I just got into UT Southwestern MSTP today and I was in the grey zone. So to tpage8: the odds are non-zero but I guess u knew that if you were fitting Gaussians like the rest of us. (I can make nerd humor again!!!!!)

damn sorry but it seems like things are still moving the email they sent me acknowledged that they don't know how many students will be in the class with me

Long-time lurker, first-time poster!!!!!!

I was also grey-zoned for forever and was beginning to loose hope (I'd signed up to retake the MCAT and everything). Apparently the turn-over is pretty slow this year.

An update:

1831 applicants
15 withdrew before acceptance
735 offered at least one MD/PhD acceptance (40.5% - 735/1816)
15 defer to the future (typically restricted to a single MD/PhD school)
98 withdrew after acceptance (most often into MD programs)
622 current class entering in 2014
1081 rejected or waitlisted

Given the great majority of MD/PhD programs have less than 10 positions per year, those of you looking to apply should consider a broad application strategy with: a) 5 dream schools, b) 5-10 matched schools, and c) 5 safety schools. Each program will look at your application with a different set of criteria. In my personal view, you should look for institutions with research intensive environments (i.e.: CTSA & funding: NIH, DOD, VA, NSF) in the area of your interest. PM me if you want to discuss your list.

Some activity over past 72 hours:

1831 applicants
15 withdrew before acceptance
743 offered at least one MD/PhD acceptance (40.9% - 743/1816)
17 defer to the future (typically restricted to a single MD/PhD school)
108 withdrew after acceptance (most often into MD programs)
618 current class entering in 2014
1073 rejected or waitlisted

My read is that these actions are few days old and just been reported by some programs. The other thing is that withdrawal into MD programs is what is growing more rapidly at this point.

Update:

1832 applicants (this applicant added late might be a DF from last year)
15 withdrew before acceptance
750 offered at least one MD/PhD acceptance (41.3% - 750/1817)
19 defer to the future (typically restricted to a single MD/PhD school)
112 withdrew after acceptance (most often into MD programs)
619 current class entering in 2014
1067 rejected or waitlisted
There are still 18 applicants with at least a double acceptance (1 with 3); 6 of these are between 2 MD/PhD programs. However, one school is involved in 4 of the 18 suggesting late posting of decisions.

Anyone have a rough estimate of how much movement on wait-lists occur in June/July? I'm ultimately deferring for a Fulbright grant, but I would love to come back to the US heading to Boston U (I am apparently "relatively high" on the list...whatever that means) .

You should also check whether they allow you to defer if accepted off the waitlist (I know some schools do not let you do that). Congrats on the Fulbright!!
