2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The problem is that if you retake the MCAT and go up a point or two I don't think it would really make a difference, also I wonder if they then average that score with the past one and if they do what real advantage is there? Also if you go down in score that could be fatal.
We have VERY similar applications and I was complete mid September. I have 1 rejection and silence from my other 13 schools. I'm not sure how I'm going to improve my app other than retaking the mcat.......which I really really really dont want to do!!!

This panic thread is the best, gives me a place to vent, contemplate, and get feedback, thank-you all for your support and advice, and I think of all of you often and wish you all the best. Even if I don't get in this cycle I would feel so happy if someone from this thread did! It would give me hope .
How does an adcom choose from so many qualified applicants, there's more of us than med school openings.

wow you and I are so alike, you have no idea.
same gpa and same mcat, same late secondaries, etc.
screwed up thing is that I am a bloody international .

I thought today was gonna be the day but nooo, just got a rejection early in the morning.
F this ****
Also aamc took so long to process the application it was ridiculous, they should issue their customers a credit. Many schools do not take international students period. It's harder for you but I wish you the best

I submitted the first day applications were open and was verified July 27th... It was just super...

Sent in secondary updates to the 10 schools that haven't rejected me yet and got another within 5 minutes... lol. Not quite sure what's wrong with my application; submitted late June, 3.7/33 (13V, 10PS, 10BS), good EC's, research and clinical experience. I applied to mostly reasonable schools, including 3 state schools, but I have nothing but rejections and silence. Currently crying blood and starting to fill out masters applications. Anyone have any idea what gives?

Wat? I also submitted on the first day AMCAS opened and was verified 24 June. Maybe it was a problem with your school sending transcripts, or with LORs?

I had transcripts from three schools and 250+ units I'm assuming was the issue

I'm pretty shocked by this because you're a great applicant but this cycle has been weird as heck. One thing to try that worked well for me (who would've looooooved to have your numbers) is to write update letters with extremely personal reasons for wanting to interview. Sell them on how you would be a great fit for the school and vice-versa. I got an interview at my top choice after one such letter. I don't know if I would have otherwise.

10 rejections 🙁

Still have 9 schools to hear back from: OHSU, NYMC, Albany, SUNY Buffalo, Rosalind (small-pooled), Tufts, MCW, Rush, and Drexel.

No II this cycle except from the few D.O. schools I applied to.

32 MCAT, 3.6-3.7 cGPA and sGPA; is there still MD hope for me?

Should I be posting this in the "What are my chances thread"?

I was complete at schools between mid-sept. and first week of Oct. Other than applying late I don't know what has been holding back my application. Without having attended MD interviews I haven't been able to get feedback, my pre-med advisers don't give much advice. I felt my E.C.s were pretty solid: 1000s of hours of research upcoming publication, 200 plus hours of tutoring, multiple clubs, 100 hours of clinical volunteering (i know this a bit low), 50 plus hours of shadowing, mission trips, non-medical part-time job.

I'm in a similar position as you with a little less EC and lower mcat. I am at 7 rejections and some of those include your schools ( Albany/ Rush). So, I would assume you might still be I'm the running. I was complete early oct.

I was complete practically the same time as you and I am in the same boat with no II's (1 rejection and silence from the rest) 🙁 I also haven't heard anything from Albany, Tufts, MCW or Drexel but now I'm curious about the places that you've received rejections because we've applied to quite a few of the same schools (sorry to rub salt in the wound).

I applied to a few UC schools, SUNY Upstate, Loyola, Central Michigan, NYU, UW

Thanks, I appreciate it! Looks like Loyola is the only other one we have in common. Is it just me or has this been a very strange cycle?!

Idk this is my first application cycle.
I'm just frustrated that I applied late. I had my primary in by mid-July which I thought would still put me in the early/on-time category as deadlines weren't until November. My pre-med adviser had said that submitting the primary before July 15 means that you will have a solid shot (WRONG). Sadly, it took AMCAS 6 weeks to review my application. The woes of being a first-gen college student, learning from misinformed advisers, and being mentored by older physicians (who are fantastic doctors, but out of touch with the application process).

Did you get a rejection email from Loyola or is it still the Application has been reviewed statement on the status page

Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys.

I applied late in the cycle last year and ended up with zero interviews (despite having good stats). Applied in June this time around and have 7 interviews already with a couple of acceptances.

The point is... please DON'T LOSE HOPE! Everything will work out in the end. =)

My rejection was from Brown (sorry if I was unclear). On my secondary portal for Loyola it says "Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail." OMG this changed today! Now I'm scared....I was going to write up and send my update next week but maybe I should do it now.....

Hi,

If you don't mind, would share your stats and timeline for the first go around.

Also congrats on the success of this cycle!

First news for the new year: another pre-interview rejection. Still waiting to hear back from 11 schools; hopefully I can still get one or two more IIs by Jan but the news start to make me lose hope.

Sent a letter of interest this morning, received a rejection from the school this evening. Alright then glad that's taken care of.......
Almost snorted out my coffee reading this! I think that's the second time that almost happened on SDN. I'm sorry to hear that.

I can relate to this.

Sent a update/interest letter to a school on last Friday.. Rejected on Monday.

Then today (Tuesday) I got an email from the school telling me the letter was added to my file....

Tomorrow is January 15... aka the "mid-January" that some schools I have been to said they would respond by. I have been trying not to panic, but I can feel the anxiety rising up from my stomach.... o.o D:

Yikes, that's no fun. Hoping you get some better news this week.

Respond with acceptance or rejection? Perhaps you're inbound for some good news then.

Sorry man, that sucks, but I'm just laughing at the hilarity of the situation.

That sucks! I would guess that it's a coincidence though. In theory, they could have had the committee meeting today, but I know a lot of schools make decisions and wait the next day or so to inform the applicants

Hi,

Thank you!

I submitted my primary towards the end of July and got verified at the end of August. I was a bit slow with my secondaries too and the last of them were submitted in late October.

Stats: ~3.9/32

Ok, also starting to get a little panicky. I started out decently with:
- 4 interviews over November/December (complete between late August/1st week of September at all 25 schools I applied to)
- deferred for spring decisions at 2 of the 4, still waiting on the other 2
- 8 pre-interview rejections
- dead silence from 13...

Starting to get nervous that I don't interview as well as I thought and not liking all the silence from those 13... I'm lucky to still be in the running at the 4 I interviewed at, but almost everyone else I know from work/my post-bacc applying or who applied in the past is/was doing better by this point with lower stats. :-/ I also don't really know when would make sense for me to reapply if it came down to that because I really won't have any major changes to my application by this summer. I'm working 2 jobs right now since this cycle left me broke and can't feasibly add much else in... :lame:

Just received another rejection. They must have sent this one out as soon as they came to the office  +pity+

It's that time of the season, isn't it? Got a rejection email yesterday (Cornell), e-mail to check the online portal this afternoon just to find a rejection (Georgetown), and as I was reading the letter on the portal I got another e-mail and my stomach dropped--yep, another rejection (Albert Einstein). Three in a 24 hour period (two within minutes of each other), fun times, and I hear Stanford is sending mass rejections too, I guess I dodged that in the mail today. All right then, you win some, you lose some. Hopefully I will find my medical school home elsewhere this cycle and others will find their perfectly matched medical school home in the places I was rejected. Definitely a gym day though. hahaha

How late were you last cycle, and did you change your application at all (e.g. new personal statement, more activities, etc)?

😱 Yikes! Jeez, my condolences...

Honestly it'd be a relief to hear something from schools, even if it is a rejection. So I can focus my attention on the schools I can actually get into.

Wow definitely better stats than mine! Well I have accepted that I will have another go at this. I actually wnat to know, hoping next year being ealry will get me into maybe a better school or a Cali school.

I generally agree. Not that I want hasty rejections, but once they know they don't want me for sure I like to be notified as well. Nothing more rude than schools that never let people know that they've been rejected. But getting a rejection while reading another rejection I just received was a little cruel (not that they had any way of knowing).

Sitting on 0 interviews and about 15 more schools to hear back from..kind of freaking out, I have absolutely 0 desire to retake my MCAT and take another gap year
