2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I stopped reading school-specific threads after October 15th. All those people getting accepted is messing with my mind.

+1

Even before that I didn't go back to a thread for a school at which I interviewed. At that point seeing others rave about their interviewer or how awesome the school was means nothing to me.

I can only dream :/ But I have been complete for 2.5 months now :/

hey man hang in there. I know what you're going thru as the nightmare only ended for me recently. Keep ur chin up bro bc ur time will come soon! I am a perfect example of there being a light at the end of the tunnel. i'm rooting for you. Good luck! :luck:

LizzyM 74. No IIs. Maybe I shouldn't have slapped all my LOR writers in the face after I slept with their husbands... bad idea?

This radio silence from basically all the schools I applied to is really nerve-wracking. No good news, no bad news...nothing. I check my email and get so excited when I notice a new message in my Inbox...only for it to be some old listserv that I forgot to unsubscribe to. After having a particularly crappy past week, the only thing keeping me going is the possibility of eventually, finally getting some news. Ugh I just need a hug 🙁

I'm panicking like anyone else (I have become waitlist kitteh). But I found the light that breaks the darkness halfway through the tunnel due to negligent infrastructure upkeep... I fixed my Kuerig today by running vinegar through it. That mixed with off-brand pumpkin spice K-cups is quite life changing. Onto the second half of the tunnel!

Do colleges give feedback to wait listed applicants? I want to know where I messed up.

I love everything about this post. 👍

I would say it depends on the med school and the number of apps they get during the year. The one I interviewed at encouraged those who got waitlisted to call sooner (say, December-January) rather than later (May or later), but schools receiving 10k+ apps are likely going to be too busy at this time of year. I don't think it would hurt to ask, at any rate.

they told you over the phone?

They told me that I had been placed on hold, and those decisions come out later. However, they said everyone who is not invited for interview right away is placed on hold, and that some of them might get an interview later. However, my priority score was too low for an interview

damn 🙁 sorry to hear that nabilsmail. That means I am on hold too then (secondary submitted back in July), but I don't know if I want to find out about my "priority score". I anticipate a lot more people to call them up.

1 rejection and 1 hold so far out of 5 applications, officially joining the panic thread!

i feel your pain. sometimes i send emails to myself with attachments from work and forget that i sent them. then i check my inbox later at home, see a new message, get excited, and then dissapointed when i realize the mail is from myself.

Being a reapplicant sucks. Applied to 30 schools, 18 of which I applied last time. My only wrongdoing last cycle was applying too late, but it appears being a reapplicant essentially kills your application's chances anyway :-/ I am 4/12 II's for new schools, 1/18 on reapp schools.

At least you had/have 5 interviews! I'm not a reapplicant (yet...), but I don't have any at this point. :/

I'm a reapp, 0 II, 4 rejections. 👎

Four on holds, two rejections and one telephone interview (i would be happy but this school still has to invite me for actual interveiw so yeah). Still waiting on like 15 schools, im basically counting at least 3 of the 4 on holds as rejections because those schools just get too many applicants....ughh. I really do wish med schools could somehow expand classes while not having to sacrifice quality of education that way there is more opportunities for us. If you think about it there is always a shortage of doctors in the field. Ohh well. LizzyM of 70.

omg. I can so relate to you. re-app here. applied to 25 schools last yr. (1 II and 24R). Main wrongdoing last year was late cycle. This year, I applied to 32. I am 1/16 II's on schools I've applied to and 10/16 II's on new schools.

Why? Why do you guys think this is? Are re-apps that bad?

do you mind sharing your stats? also judging by your school count, you've applied to a number of new schools. Does anyone know if medschools you haven't applied to before know that your'e a reapplicant? Obviously those you've applied to know but what about new schools?

*edit* if you apply to a new school you shouldn't be counted as a reapplicant.

For those schools that you have reapplied to unless you have done major changes to your app, such as significant gpa increase or more research/volunteering they will most likely think same story. Also every cycle it gets more competitive thats why reapps have it so hard. Unless you've beefed up your app since last cycle the same app that got rejected is going to be compared to even more qualified apps so ur chances are lower. It's the hard reality of med school applicants. I am a first year, but I am telling you about my friend's experience and he is now faced with the decision of having to quit on med school and pursue a master's in biomedical engineering. I wish you luck and hope we all get in somewhere.

Any suggestions? I applied to 40 schools, the longest secondary has been in for about 2.5 months now, the last one I submitted about 6 weeks ago, and still no IIs. Got rejections from 5 pretty quickly so there's still 35 out there. Anyone in the same boat? Any help? Not even love from the one IS school. LizzyM 68.

Freaking out a bit because 2II's but still sitting on two applications gahhh getting to be late in the cycle :scared:👎

Also a reapplicant and I've done a whole bunch of stuff to increase my chances this time. Did a postbac, retook the MCAT, completely redid my PS and how I wrote my ECs, and got new LORs. Just got my first II to a school that rejected me pre interview last time so there is hope out there for us reapps. We just got to put in the work.

Am I reading this right? You have 11 interviews and you're posting in the panic thread?

when did you apply last cycle? or better question, when did you complete your secondaries last cycle? thanks!

I think he's just showing that he has a much higher success rate at the new schools he applied to compared to the ones where he's a reapp

I feel your pain! I applied to about the same amount of schools with a LizzyM of 66-67. Submitted around the same time too. Got no love from schools quick, some pre-secondaries. What state are you from? I got love from W. Michigan (finally!!) but not until December, and the process was quite tedious.

I am from CO- so only one school 🙁

I just keep getting pre-interview holds! Its like im in the dreaded middle ground where my application isn't bad enough to reject but not great enough to extend an interview!! I have a total of 3 of these!!

Anyone know if I haven't heard back from ucla/ucsd since beginning of September, should I just cut my losses now and assume it's a silent rejection?

UCLA just started reviewa/giving out IIs a couple weeks ago, so it's hard to say anything for sure. I think people have mentioned that SD does silent holds if you've been complete for longer than a month, but nobody is too sure. These schools enjoy torturing people. Shaking my fist at UCD too, haha
