Current med students-- can you please tell me what your typical daily class schedule looks like (class days/times)? The website shows the classes you take for each semester, but I am interested in learning how many lecture hours, small group hours, and lab hours, there are in a given week at UB 🙂 I'd really appreciate the info!
Hi there!
I'm a M1 and our schedule goes like this: 8am-12pm lectures with couple of case study/discussion groups/Problem Based Learning/labs mixed in, depending on the class. Usually classes ends at noon which is amazing because you have all the other time to study or procrastinate hahaha. On Monday we have Clinical practice of medicine which is basically our clinical component (this semester we learn how to do physical exams! yay!). Usually after 1 hour of CPM lecture, we have seminar groups with a local doc where we go over everything we learned in lecture with a standardized patients/our classmates. That is only once a week. We also have to go to preceptor every other week (we see patients and take histories/physicals... it's pretty amazing!) And most students participate in free clinics etc etc...

If other people have questions, please pm me. I don't really check this thread often =]

Current Students: Where do most students live? I am hoping to find a 1BR/studio apartment for an affordable price.

I'm confused! How else will they rank candidates?

Dear Wait List Candidate:

Dr. Severin has decided not to break the Wait List into rankings at this time. As the week's progress, he could decide to change this approach. If that is the case, the ranking (what third of the wait list you are in)would be reflected on the "Applicant Status Check" on our internet site.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Best regards.

Mr. Rosso
Admissions Advisor

I had a heart attack when I read the email at first, it took me a minute to understand what it meant. Baaah! This process is killing me!

I wonder why they decided to delay breaking up the waitlist.

From my understanding, they still have ranked the candidates on the WL (I am on it as well). My thinking is that they just would rather us not *know* where we are on the list for some unknown purpose. I asked Mr. Rosso about sending an update and he said "it wouldn't do anything because candidates are already ranked."

It could be that they haven't finished reviewing all applications yet? I have yet to see evidence that mine has been reviewed (submitted in early August). So, maybe they're just waiting to have more people reviewed before they release WL information.

Of course, my application could just be a silent rejection and they may very well have reviewed all applications.

Hmm good point! This might be nit picky, but when I asked the same question, Rosso replied that the *scoring* is already finalized, as opposed to the *ranking*. So even though our scores might be complete, maybe they're waiting to get a few more interviews in so that they can score them and then update the rankings?

I think you might be right!

Don't lose hope! Remember this school does random review. I had a friend who interviewed late last cycle (like the last possible day, though I dont know when that was) and was accepted.

Yeah at this point its very unclear, they are probably waiting for a few more interviews. Or perhaps they want to hear from WLd candidates (via interest letter or whatever) before we are put into tiers. I only say this because based on what they said at interview day the top two tiers get accepted usually, and perhaps they don't want to give anyone a clear idea of their likelihood of acceptance at this point in the game

I think the reason they're not doing the ranking currently is because they don't have as many on the waitlist that they would like right now. I interviewed on a pretty bad blizzard day where only 10/20 or so candidates showed up. I recall another interview date which was set on a blizzard day again where the same occurrence of the candidates not showing probably happened.

Hello,

I have been following this thread for quite sometime now. I have been anxiously waiting to hear something from UB through email. I check my application status everyday on their website. Does UB change your application status if they have already reviewed your application or do I have to wait to hear from them by email? My application status has been for a long time now Secondary Application Received. Thanks

Mine stayed at "Secondary Application Received" until the post-interview decision.

I'm in the same boat (pre-interview). I called to ask if I had been reviewed yet and the response I got was something along the lines if "We are still waiting on a decision on your file from the committee." I'm not sure what to make of that. A hold? Silent rejection? Who knows, lol.

Well, that's actually a pretty informative statement. It sounds like either a) you have not yet been reviewed by the adcom at all or b) they're going to re-review your file at a later meeting (I know some schools have a process of multiple reviews). At least their response was a bit optimistic!

Thank you for the vote of confidence!! I hope I hear some good news soon. The interview season is closing rapidly, lol!!

Geeze, I know it. Every time I see someone else getting an interview invite at a school I haven't heard from, it's definitely my first instinct to think "Welp, that's probably just about the last II that they'll be giving out..." 😕

Call them and asked if your application has been reviewed or not.

Has yours been? I know you've been waiting for quite a while.
So far had 10 interview invites, but yet to receive any response from UB. I may have to choose from schools where I have been accepted (and those where I may get accepted off their waitlist).
How about you? Have you heard from UB and other schools. Best of luck.

Quick questions to any current students: Are the lectures recorded and posted (slides included)? How is the quiz/testing schedule (once a week or like an end of the block test)? I plan to attend all the lectures, but for studying I really like the idea of being able to review lectures and write notes at my own pace after.

I'm not a "current" medical student here at UB, but I am a "graduate" Ph.D. candidate who has had many of my students matriculate into the SOM. Thus, I am able to answer this query with relative certainty. (1) Yes, most lectures [if not all] are recorded and readily available on UBLearns, which is where you'll find the majority of your lecture powerpoints and/or any other materials for the class. You will be given access upon matriculation into the medical school with the same username used for your email. You do not need to "set up" anything to use it. The medical school does it for all 144 M1 matriculants. I know of few instances where the lectures were not up on UBLearns that very day, but even fewer where you had not had access to it within 2 days. (2) Quizzes/Exams can be tricky. Sometimes you have one this week, two another week, or all three one week and none the following week. It really depends on scheduling and now that UB has removed the Jewish Holidays from the schedule, the courses are able to have "more time" if you will and you might not have a situation where you have 3 or 4 exams in one week, but rather 2 on this week and 2 on the other. Basically, it is rare for you to have exams that spread out. They tend to clump. This is particularly problematic with Gross, which tends to take up 70% of most people's first semester.

Interviewed 11/13/13, accepted 11/21/13, in the process of withdrawing my deposit now as I got into a higher choice of mine, best of luck to all y'all on the waitlist! Definitely is a fantastic school with great faculty/staff.
