2013-2014 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just received my FA Award Letter in the mail solely based on my FAFSA. It was all loans.

No grants or scholarships, but the letter mentioned that the scholarship application deadline is March 1st. My friend also mentioned that Downstate requires the "Need Access" application, which I haven't filled out.

I haven't taken a look at Downstate's FA process yet, but can anyway speak to whether this is the final award letter that I'll receive, or will they notify me of grants or scholarship later on?

I know that it's a state school so I'm not hoping for much, but was just wondering if I can expect another award letter later on.
+1. Also got an award letter for all loans. Didn't fill out the parental info on my fafsa so they I don't think this would be the time they would give you a scholarship. I'm pretty sure this is solely based on the info you put in the fafsa - it said that they're sending the award letter regardless of if you were accepted yet.
And I didn't see anywhere on their financial aid website that you need to fill out need access....

Did anyone hear back since an interview post-February 6th?

hold couple weeks ago, hoping for good fortune like some you guys here :angelic:

Anyone have success after a pre-interview spring review status?

What is this picture response that was mentioned earlier? Is it similar to SUNY Buffalo where they give you a quick/casual essay prompt before lunch?

Not like Buffalo. They give you this random picture of a scene from the city, and ask you to write a paragraph about it.

So is it more like creative writing? .... Cause Buffalo you could relate it to a valuable experience about health care or something relevant to why you're interviewing for a medical school haha

I was an art history minor, and this exercise was exactly what we would do when analyzing a photograph or a painting--visual analysis etc. (Unless I missed the point of the task and went off in a completely different direction haha)

I interviewed 1/15 and got the "hold for spring consideration" email today. Shrug.

Damn, out of 10+ holds in the past 2 weeks, 5 acceptances have been offered to those "hold for spring consideration". Sigh I really do wonder when we're going to hear back to those of us in purgatory :/

Hey can any current students comment on the living situation? I am thinking to dorm for the first two years but I don't see the fees for housing on the website. Thank you!

Are any accepted students on here planning on going to Second Look Day (or "Annual Research Day" as they call it). As a reminder, it says to RSVP by TODAY March 3!!

I'm leaving an apartment in Park Slope to dorm for at least the first year. I know tons of current students who commute but with the amount of time I know I'll be spending on campus in the library and stuff it's not worth it to live off campus (sketchy area and long wait times for subway at night). Depends how much time you'll feasibly spend on campus IMO

Is there any one on here who interviewed on October 13th (or prior to that) and was placed on hold for spring consideration? If sd, have you gotten an acceptance, or rejection?

Yep. Me. Interviewed in September. Hold in October. Still waiting for news. Why do you think people from that early have decisions already?

did anyone get accepted without a Certiphi email?

This morning I got an email invitation to the annual Research Day. It began "Dear Accepted Student," and that's literally the only thing I've received from the school post-interview. I called and verified just now that I was in fact accepted.

Congrats! When did you interview?

Could you share when you interviewed/your stats?

Sure. Interviewed 1/28. In State. 3.62 cGPA/3.49 sGPA/33 MCAT

Don't know if it makes a diff but I'm non-trad with a Masters in Biomedical Science.

I doubt it, but I am not really sure. That is what I hope to find out.
How did you feel that your interview went when you interviewed there?

Same... Interviewed in late January as well. When does movement typically begin?
My LizzyM is 73 but I'm OOS. Traditional applicant.
There are a couple of people, including myself, who were put on "hold for spring consideration" post-interview and have subsequently been accepted in the following weeks so it could happen at any time. Good luck!!

The hold email asks us to send in our Spring semester grade report if we are still enrolled in college. Does anyone else think they mean Fall? Normally, spring grades wouldn't be available until May/June.

Has anyone who interviewed on 1/30 heard back yet?

Does anyone know how long it takes to receive financial aid information after completing fafsa? Also how long does it take for the background check to be cleared? On the email it said 3-5 business days and it's been like 10 days for me. Maybe I'm just being neurotic hah.

That is unusual, maybe they're just backed up. The background check took about 3-4 days for me.

I just called and they said they're waiting on an international report since I lived in a different country growing up.

Withdrew my acceptance today. Felt like I killed a puppy.
