2013-2014 Texas Tech - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If anyone is having any issues being added to the Class of 2018 group, pm me and I'll send you an invitation. Also, if you don't have a fb, I would recommend making one. They do come with some nuisances, but our class uses the class page to communicate anything and everything- from assignments to schedule changes to group activities.

Plus, if you have any questions, quite a few people from our class are in the group to help answer them.

Y'all, I just re-read through the information packet that we got on interview day and I'm getting so excited 🙂

I had a quick question. So obviously, interviews are over for Tech/El Paso. I did not receive an interview offer, however, I also did not receive a rejection. I was wondering if there was just a delay in them sending it out, or if they offer interviews much later. I am in purgatory right now and am curious. Thanks!

If you're in state, formal rejections will roll out sometime soon. There aren't going to be any more interviews, I'm sorry. I'm not sure how it works for out of state.

Hmm, something struck me today: are TTUHSC students Red Raiders? Because I don't know how I feel about that; Tech beat up my undergrad pretty good the last two years in football.

I haven't received an email about Merlin. ???
So TMDSAS shows you matched but didn't get an email with all the documents they want sent it? Have you logged into Merlin to see if you can pay the placement fee?

You might want to give admissions a call, since the email said they wanted stuff by the 17th.

It's probably a bit early but has anyone received the official acceptance/packet by mail?

Has anyone heard anything about when the alternate list will be released?
At the reapplication seminar they said middle to end of this month the official alternate list will be announced. They said they're behind schedule due to construction and whatnot else.
I'm with you on that boat btw, but keeping our patience is all we can do now... And send in LoIs and update letters. Haha.

I called them last week and they said they would be releasing the alternate list today (4/1/14).

Please post if you guys hear anything. So far me haven't, and me are beginning to think this day is never going to end!
Haha me haven't heard a peep either. But even if you get on the waitlist, most likely you wouldn't find out about the decision till May, June anyway.

Newest update...they said they will release the alternate list hopefully by the end of the day, but at the latest the end of the week.

Just got an email saying I was put on the waitlist. Do they send this to everyone they interview? I have been accepted to a DO school in SoCal but am not sure if I should keep my hopes up. Although at my pre-interview dinner, all the host student had been on the waitlist before getting accepted and said waitlist people have a pretty good chance.

Hurray for the alt list! I got my email at 5pm today, but my phone sucks at getting it from the servers, so didn't see until now.
(From my friends currently attending ttu SOM and admissions office contacts.)
"The wait list here (at tech) sees a lot of movement for various reasons, but normally not in full swing until May, so just keep on your toes and make good impressions if you get any contact from them (the admissions office)."
Two of my friends came off the wait list last year, and another the year before that, so I have high hopes for any of us that have been patiently waiting. 🙂
Goodluck to my fellow waitees!

From every doctor I've ever talked to:
"Rule number 1 of medical school apps: apply to and go where you would want to learn.
Rule number 2: you should definitely want to go anywhere you know you've gotten in above an alt pool, since your first 4 years are pretty much the same. It's crazy to risk losing your chance at something you'll love by waiting on a school that wait-listed you."
However: It doesn't hurt you to wait and see until mid-end of may when your DO school likely has you commit, options are always amazing, and I personally would love to go to tech above all else.
Still, I know I applied to almost everywhere I could, because "the best medical school is the one that accepts you."
Whichever you get/choose I wish you luck, just my two cents, haha.

Thanks! I really appreciate ur advice. I am actually really psyched for moving to SoCal, the only reason I am hoping for this is the tuition.....gotta love texas for that.

Haha, I can understand that, even just living expenses outside of Texas are just crazy it seems too. (Especially from the Lubbock/Panhandle area to elsewhere.)

Any current Tech students on this forum who can answer some questions?

Off the waitlist and WAY too excited to be at Tech very soon!!! This was my number one school and I'd already resigned myself to reapplying. Thought I'd be waiting on a phone call from Luis, per old SDN posts, but the news came from an email instead. Keep refreshing those inboxes and keep the faith, waitlisters!

Congrats!! 😀 Did you send them any kind of updates while you were waiting?

Congrats PianoKeyNecktie! That gives me hope that there is some waitlist movement!

I emailed a LOI two weeks ago, but never received a reply, so I'm not sure if that actually did anything. It wouldn't hurt to try though!
Thank you hoffy321! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you 🙂

Nice! I will see you there in a few months!

YAAYYY! From what we all saw at spring training, our class is AWESOME and the upper classmen are incredibly helpful and kind 🙂 Welcome!

We're basically too legit to quit.

Also @PianoKeyNecktie make sure you join the FB group to get all the important and lavish deets!

You better bet I did that as soon as possible! I had to read all the posts before I processed that this is real, haha.

@Sassafrass23 that's what I felt after interview day, so I'm glad to hear it's still the same! 😀

I need some help! I just got accepted from the alternate list and I am so thrilled! On top of that, I got the email 30 minutes before my wedding! So that was very, very exciting.
My husband is very supportive and happy for me. However, he has a one-year job that is an amazing opportunity for him in Ohio. For that reason, I want to at least consider deferring enrollment for one year. If that doesn't work out, we both absolutely prioritize my medical school education.
Does anybody know anything about how the process of requesting deferment works? I had trouble finding information about it online and the admissions office is closed. Would I first accept their offer and then submit a request? And does anybody know what those chances might be like? Thank you so much!

Congrats! That is amazing to hear. I don't have any personal experience with Texas Tech but my best guess would be to accept their offer and then send a request for deferment. However, I guess you could also wait till their office opens and request to defer before you accept the offer? I am not sure what they will think of your request however, as this is is a late wait-list acceptance. I am sure they will be understanding though. Would you attend if you could not defer? Best of luck with everything, and congratulations to you!

I too have a question about deferment. I pre-matched to TTUHSC-Lubbock in December and ranked them #1 during the match though I did have a challenging time ranking Houston #1 or this institution #1.

I have a history of ulcerative pancolitis and unfortunately I started to flare right before Christmas 2013. I was hospitalized three different times and received enough blood transfusions to start generating immune responses to donor blood. After aggressive treatment that included drastically high and prolonged prednisone levels, TNF-alpha inhibitors, and azathioprine, I am still flaring. I have been referred to Mayo Clinic where I currently am, awaiting a total proctocolectomy scheduled for this coming Tuesday. Because I have been on prednisone for so long and at such high doses (average dose over the past 121 days is 50 mg with peak doses at 120 mg), it will require a three step procedure with a minimum recovery time of six months in between step one and step two.

My colorectal surgeon stated that he would lean towards deferment, with his PA also agreeing. A recent graduate from this institution is also suggesting I lean towards deferment. I'm not entirely sure the school will give me a deferment. I will submit letters from three different physicians if I decide to defer requesting the deferral on my behalf. I plan to call Dr. Prado today and discuss the situation with her.

If you were in my shoes, would you defer? If I were simply having a single step procedure with the creation of a permanent ileostomy, then I certainly would be planning to start in August. However, the second step of the procedure will reconnect the ileum to the rectum to form what is called a j-pouch to create a neo-pseudo colon. Step one and step two are major procedures and I am not sure if I would have enough time during Christmas break when the second step will be scheduled to fully recover and be ready for the Spring semester. Then there is the third step which is the takedown where the ileostomy is closed off. That is the easiest of the three steps but will still require time off. I would probably undergo that during the summer of MSI and MSII but I want to be productive during that summer and not have to burn two to four weeks recovering from surgery.

In your opinion, do y'all think I should try to start in August or see should I see if the school will let me defer? If they say no to the deferral, I will certainly be starting but I need to find out from Dr. Prado first.

Please excuse any typos grammatical errors. I'm using my phone to write this post.

If you feel like you should defer for medical reasons then you should. It sounds like you have a lot going on. I'd call the school asap to let them know the situation. I would imagine that they will let you defer without much difficulty. Take care of yourself! we'll see you next year 🙂
