2013-2014 Texas Tech - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did everyone get the email this morning from Louis Perez about the "IT issues with the eRaider account for incoming students"? I didn't even think that I was supposed to make an eRaider account yet. I just used my Merlin account to respond to my offer.

Do you all have eRaider email accounts already, or did I misunderstand the email?

I also received the email and responded to the offer just as you did. *shrug*

Is it normal for interviewers to have a lot of confidence in their statements about being accepted? When I interviewed here, the faculty interviewer and I had a pretty good conversation. At the end he kept saying how I'll have no problem getting in and sounded very encouraging. Do interviewers really mean that or is it a "just don't worry about it" kind of thing?

The interviewers at most schools (UTH might be an exception) have little control over whether you are accepted or not. They just write a report to the admissions committee. So it is basically very similar to your letter of recommendations. The exception to this rule is if the interviewer is on the admissions committee. Then the interviewer has alot of control. UTH uses this approach. As far as im aware, tech interviewers are not on their admissions committee (i might be wrong of course). So you cant really take an interviewer seriously if they say that you will get in no matter what and they are not on the admissions committee. They are just trying to be optimistic, thats all.
All this is just speculation of course.

A&M's interviewers are also frequently on the committee and which of you interviewers were or weren't was shared with us prior to interviewing.

Interesting. At UTH, some current students explained that every interviewee gets one adcom interview and one regular interview. Basically, ace the adcom interview and your in for sure. They didnt tell us which was which, but it seemed pretty obvious for me.

Yeah, I thought I had been passed up!

Congratulations! I guess they are rolling them out in batches today. Im really hoping for one!
Stats if you dont mind?

Congraturations! Stats if you dont mind? Also, interview date?

Got a pre-match offer around 5pm. It feels so good to know for sure that I'm going to med-school. GPA:3.7 MCAT:33 Interviewed 11/19.

Hmm I interviewed in early Nov. but haven't got a pre-match. They probably passed me up..

Got a pre-match today, too. GPA: 3.6. MCAT: 33. Non-trad. Interviewed 11/15. Congrats, everyone!

Im right there with you. I interviewed 11/8. Looks like no prematch for us. Dont worry, im sure alot of spots will be opened in the match.

Question, if we're still hoping for an offer from another school that we haven't prematched to, we should still accept this offer correct? So in the case where I want to match to another school, but I don't end up matching there, I should log onto Merlin to accept this pre-match offer and send in all the papers they need right? And if I end up matching to my top-choice school, I am allowed to decline the pre-match offer and take the match offer? Just don't want to commit to a school without realizing it lol

32P, 3.9cGPA, 3.77 sGPA and interviewed in mid October. So it doesn't seem like this batch of pre-match offers were for only post November 15th interviews.

Hi guys, so for the OOS students, can you please tell us how much your scholarship was for? Just to get an idea...

They emailed me about a month after I was accepted saying that I would be considered in-state for tuition purposes

What did that email look like? I received a scholarship email, but nothing has said anything about in-state tuition.

It was an email with an attachment with guidelines on how to write thank you letters to the scholarship donors. I believe that scholarships over a certain amount for OOS students simply become a waiver to pay in-state tuition.

Is this always true? I've heard it from several sources but none of my emails from TTUHSC mention it and I can't find anything on their website. Anyone have a source?
Sector9 is a credible source, hes a student there and he runs sdn. Tech probably just doesnt openly advertise the scholarship for whatever reason.

Texas state law allows for them to do this
Sec. 54.213. SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT. (a) An institution of higher education may charge a nonresident student who holds a competitive scholarship of at least $1,000 for the academic year or summer term for which the student is enrolled resident tuition and fees without regard to the length of time the student has resided in Texas. The student must compete with other students, including Texas residents, for the scholarship and the scholarship must be awarded by a scholarship committee officially recognized by the administration and be approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board under criteria developed by the coordinating board.
http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/ED/htm/ED.54.htm

Tech has used this for several years to allow them to attract OOS students to the school.

Keep in mind that they have a max of 10% OOS students, so those that they accept are usually pretty competitive and therefore qualify for the scholarship. To my knowledge, all of the OOS students here receive the scholarship

Acceptance email this morning! Interviewed on 11/22 - OOS.

Awesome! Congrats to everyone pre-matching!!! Don't worry if you haven't, the match is still yet to come 🙂

Yes go ahead and accept for now. If you match to a higher school you will automatically be withdrawn from any lower ranked prematches so you don't have to decline anything. You are not committing to a school in Texas by accepting a prematch offer. A prematch offer is binding on the school but nonbinding on you (I think credit goes to @BlueLabel for this explanation).

Did it take anybody a few days for their status on Merlin to change after receiving a premetch? I'm still not able to accept my offer.

Ya, don't worry, it actually took a while for me

Did anyone who pre-matched on 11/15 receive an acceptance letter/more info in the mail?

Accepted Monday 12/16. OOS interviewed 10/23. Got scholarship information email the very next day.
