Does anyone know what the R# is on the scholarship acceptance form?

I think it's your Raider number but that's just a guess. I left it blank and called to confirm it was okay (though I didn't specifically mention the R number, they just said the form was okay)

Just received scholarship info. 2 grand a year for the first two years! I'm in-state.

However, I think I am withdrawing... Hopefully someone here gets my spot!!

Prematched 11/15 and received offer this afternoon, as well.

okay great, thanks!

I got the presidential scholarship for 1oK/year. I got the same amount from UT Houston and I would choose UT Houston over Tech, so i might go ahead and withdraw.

So i must ask, what is your secret to getting these big scholarships? I mean like what parts of your application do you think is convincing schools to dish large amounts of money out at you? Just curious of course. And congrats, you ought to be very happy!

I'm sure being black helps alot.

But I think I also had some pretty good extracurriculars as well. I partnered with the Mayor's office of my university's city to start a citywide program to provide jobs for recently released prisoners. And I also did all the other generic premed stuff as well (research, clinical shadowing, etc.).

I also think I am getting some slack for my crap gpa because i went to a good undergrad school and did well on the mcat.

Does anyone think that there will be another round of prematches coming out tomorrow, or will we probably have to wait until the new year?

Can't say for sure but I would be doubtful. I think we have to wait until the match if we haven't heard by now.
Darn. I thought they might be giving out acceptances every Friday until the end of the year. Well, here's to waiting!

Does anyone know if there's time during the summer to fill prerequisites, or do we only have time during the spring semester to finish classes?

Does anyone know where to find the response form mentioned in the email? And can we go to order the criminal background check online?

For lubbock, class starts in late july. So you can do an early summer session at your university or a community college, but not the whole summer session. Like my university has a 5week 1 semester, 5 week 2 semester and full summer semester. I would only be able to do the 5 week 1 semester.

Have these already been filled up as soon as they were made or is there some hope for an II left?

Thanks
I interviewed last year in January, I did not get the invite until January. Like A week before my interview! There still is hope!

Even though the odds are low that actually made me feel a lot more optimistic! Thanks lol

They have added more slots to the FMAT program each year. There are 9 of us MS1s currently in the program. They will open the application for the remaining 3 spots next month. I think it is very easy to get into before first year. Who knows how it will play out for the remaining 3 openings?

Tech received an AAMC innovations award for the FMAT program. According to the application, for last years cycle (at time of writing) 241 had applied to enter as FMATs and 7 had been accepted. Obviously, the numbers changed a little because they ended up with 9, but there is at least some selection to it.

No idea it was that competitive--Tech is such a laid-back place. That's what I love about it!

Tech sounds like an absolute dream.
Just received an interview invite today!

I clicked the link in the email and found the interview date is this Friday. Woah, I better get packing and find a flight and place to stay quick!
Thanks everyone for useful info about Tech, especially sector9

Anyone know how heavily Lubbock prematches vs how many get in through the match?

Hi everyone. I have a dilemma that I wanted to discuss with you guys. I prematched here at Tech & got offered a scholarship, however I'm torn between this school and another school that I've always wanted to go to. I have NO idea which way to go. I feel like I'm going crazy over here. Both have their own special things to offer. I just cannot decide. Plus, time is running out.

Maybe if you tell us what the other school is, we might be able to better gauge the pros/cons of the two schools.

Does anyone have anything helpful to say in deciding between Lubbock and El Paso? Deciding between these two is the last thing I have to do to finish my match list.

1. El Paso vs. Lubbock. Neither is perfect, but you may feel one city is prohibitive as compared to the other. El Paso is bigger (more patients with interesting stuff!), has an EM residency, but is generally considered awful and is near the border.

2. Grading. El Paso ranks internally but puts P/F on transcripts 1st two years. If you're mid to low performing, this is a nice way to mask that and perhaps reduce some stress, but the US is graduating way more MDs than there are spots, so by the same token, you lose the power of having 3 years of grades to speak for you when residency interview time comes. How important that is varies intensely between specialties. The SOM in Lubbock has HO, HP, P, F, so....you just have to decide on a personal level there.

3. Curriculum. El Paso works through cases; Lubbock is block based. Again....personal preference. Do you want every component: histo, patho, phys, anatomy, biochem, etc integrated around a diagnostic presentation? Or do you want one subject to look at whole body, & then repeat with next subject: anatomy, then biochem, then histo, then physic, etc?

4. As much of a feel for the students as you can get. Honestly...this is probably the most important and the hardest to assess from your position. You're going to be overwhelmed & miserable at times. The relationships & life you're going to lead with classmates is a big part of getting through that. Do some thinking on this one.

Best of luck.

If you've heard El Paso is considered awful, I can't imagine what these same people must think of boring, old Lubbock. Virtually the most distant and most irritating city to be in.

Hahaha grow up. You know nothing other than your own, ill-informed opinion.

You obviously dont realize this, but you have just done what these other people have done. They insulted el paso based on their own biases. And you turned it around and insulted lubbock based on your own biases. Completely unnecessary from both ends. People have their own preferences; generalizations such as these only display ignorance and a bit of immaturity.
Just my two cents.

I prematched in Lubbock and my husband was able to transfer through his work so we've already moved out here. We're both from Fort Worth and really like it so far! Plenty of book stores, big parks for my dog, cheap rent, good food, and no traffic. Very dry & windy though. Haven't been to El Paso but that's my 2 cents on Lubbock.

Grow up, really? You're the one who called El Paso "awful" bases on no reasonable merit. Maybe you think it is, but you should know better than to insult the city based on your own "ill-informed" opinion. I think I'm in a better position to comment seeing as how I went to Tech for my first year of college. If you don't want anyone speaking ill of Lubbock, you might want to reconsider your choice of diction.

What are you smoking?? I never said anything about El Paso!! You just made yourself look like a complete lunatic
