So as having been successful in previous years we're opening up the underdogs thread for this medical school admission cycle! I want this to be a place were we can respectfully discuss admissions issues and how to be successful in getting into medical school.

Underdogs Unite! Keep fighting your obstacles and score a knockout admission like Tyson!:)

Not really an underdog, basically an average applicant tbh.

A red flag literally is a score that's under an entire standard deviation, I.e ~ 2-3 points.
This not to mention his gpa is more than compensatory.

Anyway, I'll update this thread more before Sunday.

MCAT is a red flag? It's only a point away from the average. Red flag would be like 22-23. This is not MD.

That said, I still feel like an underdog compared to the 3.7+/28+ people.

I guess you are right. it seem to me in the lower end but I guess it's just my SDN-induced psychosis

3.6 cGPA, 3.75sGPA. 31Q(14/6/11).

I am an underdog for DO because of my 6 in VR and lack of a DO Rec letter.
Don't deny it, some of you have warned me about my VR so, yes I am an underdog because of it due to auto screens.

Dude you are NOt an underdog...don't apply to autoscreened schools

Posts stats in underdog thread. Gets offended when someone says the stats are low. Nice job SDN. Nice job.

Yes I am. No schools said they autoscreen, even the MDs but I'm calling BS on at least half of them.

I think it's valid enough. I recommend applying to Touro-NY btw.

Take 1-2 retakes/classes and bump that sGPA above the 3.0 cutoff of a lot of schools. Take summer classes so you can update your app. Seriously, like half the programs auto screen for sub 3.0 cGPA/sGPAs. You'll probably get in as is, but you'll have a ton more options if you break the 3.0 barrier.

I don't think any school has a 3.0 cutoff. That being said his gpa would have been better if higher. But chances are now to do any effective repair ( pending you don't have F's) will take too much time and he'll be better off applying broadly.

Both Touro and Rocky Vista have a minimum cGPA/sGPA requirement of 3.0

3.15 cGPA, 3.35 sGPA and 20 (7PS...4VR...9BS) MCAT... Retaking in June or July... That 20 MCAT will be a huge burgundy flag in my application...Hoping to score 27+ in my retake

3.7 cGPA, 3.7 sGPA. MCAT 22O (6/9/7). Retook in April. Hopefully That will bump my MCAT past a 26.

KCUMB has 3.25 cGPA/sGPA cutoff but others I've seen as low as 2.75...if i'm not mistaken?

Trying to get past all those cutoffs myself with a 3.159 cGPA/3.066 sGPA/27M

I applied late last cycle (verified in early/mid november) got a few secondaries back, which means I must have met some of the cut offs, but no ii's  Looking to apply much earlier, with better stats, EC's, LoR's, and PS.

OP, was there a final list with the results of this past cycle's UD's?

Did you apply with the same stats last cycle?

This is not true. Like I said, half the schools have a 3.0 cutoff. I was pre-secondary rejected from those schools for exactly this reason. This includes the Westerns, VCOM, KCUMB (3.25), RVUCOM, Touro-CA, Touro-NV, OSUCOM, and more that I can't remember right now. All of them said 3.0 cutoff for both cGPA and sGPA, but I believe one may have had a 3.0 cGPA cutoff and 2.75 sGPA cutoff.

I received explicit "screen" rejections from all of those schools indicating their cutoffs, and seeing how my MCAT score is more than 10 points above their MCAT cutoff, the only thing it could have been was the GPA.

EDIT: Also it looks like I won't be an underdog next cycle, so good luck to all of you guys! Make us proud!

Some were as low as 2.5 last cycle, but I actually think those went up to 2.7 this cycle. Now I think 2.7 is the lowest DO school cutoff.

Congratz! Where'd you get accepted?

Also I'm surprised all of these schools have cutoffs at these points. I've seen applicants with less than 3.0s get accepted to them in previous cycles though.

Looks like I belong here instead of the 2018 thread, final GPA and MCAT:

cum GPA: 3.45 (including gpa from a CC) (GPA without CC grades = 3.28)
Sci GPA: 3.11
MCAT: 27 (BS 10, VR 9, PS 8)

You probably won't encounter too many issues admittedly me thinks.

I really hope you're right, but I'll be applying very early and very broadly to be safe.

Well, you're a little bit below average. But with an early and broad app you'll overcome that.

3.19 cGPA, 2.97 sGPA, MCAT Pending.

is the 2.97 close enough to 3.0?

a lot of the DO schools I'm looking at according to the online PDF mentioned above all have my schools with a 2.75 cumulative and science GPA. am I in the clear? or is it secretly behind the scenes a 3.0?

I know for MD, i have a TON of math classes to add in, which should raise my GPA.

I guess I'll participate, but I'll keep my numbers a bit vague (within +/-.05): c3.1 | s3.5 | 1st: 23, 2nd: Pending.

Just in case, I'll just say its a DO school in the north east. I'm waiting to make sure its not a dream though .

What is magical about Touro-NY? No VR required?

They put a big emphasis on B.S. subsection scores and like high MCATs in general. I'm pretty sure that was the only reason they interviewed me.

I thought that was the rumor with Touro-CA, but I guess maybe all three Touro schools are that way?

I love the location of Touro-NY, but the building looks so small from the outside. Do they have big lecture halls etc?

The building is massive with big lecture halls. You can't tell in the picture, but it extends back all the way to the next parallel road, which is big. Its a great program too.

I haven't actually heard that about Touro-CA, but they screened me, so it didn't really matter. They explicitly mentioned that they cared a lot about the BS score at my interview, so I don't think its a rumor. How much that makes a difference or what it really means is anyone's guess.

Been Waiting for this!

IN as an underdog.

3.5 cGPA
3.2 sGPA
4.0 gGPA (Masters of Public Health)
MCAT: Taking 5/11/13. Thus far, my avg from 3 tests is 27.6

With this recent 3/23 thread--who knows--might even go lower.

KCUMB is off my list then... I thought most schools had a 3.0 c/sGPA cut off. So they wont send secondary to an applicant that has 3.2 cGPA, 3.5 sGPA and 30+ MCAT...That is weird for a DO school

"Rehabilitated" underdog and avid supporter here, good luck guys! :luck:

(started ~3.0, no MCAT ---> now ~3.5, 34 MCAT)

You knew they screened you out? What for?

Double check their website, it might be a 3.2 cutoff, I don't remember exactly.

I am not suggesting that these are my stats... I am saying it would be strange for a DO school to screen an applicant who has these stats..

Edit: it is 3.25 c/sGPA and 23 MCAT (with subscore no less than 7)

Well with enough luck you'll score well enough to not be in this thread xD

A 3.25 cut off is a bit harsh, but I guess they assume that with grade replacement it's not that hard to get there.

According to their website, KCUMB will make exceptions for otherwise good applicants to that 3.25 cutoff... my sGPA was just barely below that, and my cGPA was well above that, and my MCAT was above average for DO schools. KCUMB still rejected me post-secondary.

never give up and keep fighting the good fight!

I'm in too.

cGPA 3.18
sGPA 3.21

MCAT 29 (PS/VR/BS) 11/7/11

I wonder how many of the underdogs become "overdogs" in their medical schools classes.
